Staying in downtown Scottsdale.  Supposed to be the best bar district in the Phoenix area.  Flying to/from Vegas and driving down.

Scottsdale NYE party is OK. If you're driving down, plan on stopping at a casino about every 2 hours. Phoenix in January is perfect hoodie weather at night.

flights are ridic into phx...hoping that in a couple days maybe they drop down a bit into tus or phx from mci.  might also look into driving up to omaha and flying down from there?  idk.  trying to buy tickets for 10 people so it's going to be a massive pain in the ass and probably impossible.

I've done the drive twice, both from Wichita, both times in a van, and both times I was young enough that I didn't have to drive.  We also stopped in Tucumcari to overnight at a hotel and drove the rest of the way the next day.

Went to the '97 Fiesta Bowl, once from MHK but wasn't old enough to drive, stayed in Albuquerque on the way there

Between the proximity of the game to NYE/holidays, and the fact that lots of people winter in the PHX area, flights are expensive and already selling out fast.  I traveled 150 days/year last six years or so, trust me; if you plan to fly to the Fiesta Bowl, book ASAP.  southwest.com is already sold out on 12/31 and 1/1 for their "wanna get away" fares.  I booked 4 tickets today and we're going MCI-TUS (Tuscon).  R/T airfare from MCI-PHX was in the $800-900 range, and the options weren't great (early departures, multiple connections etc).

K-Staters in southern KS looking for alternative air options should check out SW Air out of Will Rogers Intl (OKC).  Can get into Tucson cheaper that way than Phoenix.

Tucson just over a 90 minute drive, not bad.

Anybody here where the pep rally and official University pre-game will be yet?

Going to game first, then vegas.  Flying everywhere.  Between LAS/DEN/PHX its impossible to get a flight on SW over $100

Post by: irishpunk on December 02, 2012, 11:51:01 PM
Flying to Tucson is tons cheaper than flying into Phoenix. There are shuttles that run from Tucson to Phoenix as well. I live in Tucson and will be making the 1 1/2 hour drive to Phoenix for the game on Thursday.  :driving:

We shall figure out something for tailgating as well.

Just booked the round trip flight from Santa Ana to Phoenix for $179  . Getting in on the evening of the 2nd and heading out the morning of the 5th. Don't think I'll make it in time for the pep rally.

I was in Tempe 4-5 years ago for NYE and had a blast downtown. Other than that, no clue on what to do or where to go.

this is what's really making me sick, I found tickets at around that price on saturday night but couldn't get my phone to work.  then it died and I figured I would book when I got back to KC.  because of the fog didn't get into KC until after 3 and passed out before I could get it done.

Originally was going to take the train from Topeka to Flagstaff, rent a car and drive down to the game.  22 hrs on the train sounded like a nightmare, but better than being in a cramped car.  Train was $372.

Then started looking at Southwest flights.  Managed to book MCI to Vegas for $150 and $170 back.  Since we were going to rent a car anyway no extra $ there except for the gas.  Vegas hotel was cheaper too.  5 hr drive from Vegas to Phoenix, but I'll totally get to see cool fun things like the Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon!

Do not ever ride a train if you have to be some place on time.  There is a good chance the trip will take 30 to 60 percent longer than advertised.

be careful not to take any luggage, go to the bathroom or breathe on the flight so you don't incur extra fees

Don't carry anything on either.  Sounds terrible and Southwest from DEN to PHX wasn't that much more when I booked at least (80 or so more).  Good luck.  Let me know how bad Spirit is.

yeah carry on is $5 more than a checked bag freaking rediculous. I would of flown a different airline just on principle but we're already out $150 from the Miami booking(saving that flight change for another trip)

When Baylor scored to make 45-24 I looked and you couldn't do less than $350 for Wed - Fri from KC, STL, OMA on SW.  The Fiesta is just bad one to fly to due to only 1 close airport.  It is the worst of all the BCS bowls and I am glad we are ditching it for the Sugar and hope we get a deal with the Orange or elevate the Cotton for a second BCS tie in.

Return flight on Expedia for 191$ after all my add ons which also included the 24 hr cancelation. 315$ total. Right now I'm going by myself but should change tomarrow when my two buddies join. US Air has 40k RT availability out of Omaha flying out the 2nd and back the 4th, 5th or 6th. Not great but it's something, and they are direct flights for anyone living near here. 50k availability in 1st class but it's a CRJ 900 so first is super pud (though nice if hung over on the ride home). There are coach seats for many different date combinations (some direct) for about $500 RT as well.

They have 40k RT availability out of KC as well but you have to fly out the morning of the game and back the 6th. Will arrive in Phoenix at 7:51 AM though. There's 50k award availability on that same early arriving flight and back the 5th or 6th.

EDIT: actually, there is one 40k RT award left flying out the 2nd at 9PM from KC and back on the 6th. didn't show up initially because I was searching for 2 people. so, if you have 40k US Air you want to blow and are flying solo out of KC that may be a good option.

meh....of course flights to phx not from the midwest are going to be a good deal...$350 seems like a ripoff actually...glad you got a good deal though, more EMAW the better

The Orange Bowl opponent system has already been set and they've came out and said they are pretty certain there won't be any tie ins to those other 3 bowls. Only that the best of the other 5 conf champs would get 1 of the 4 spots.

Yes, it is fun. Everyone will want to drive. Plan the driving shifts in advance. Only tell those people who are driving when their shift is. Only give the dealership/rental place the licenses of those people that are responsible enough to be able to not drink until after their shift is over. Then, when one of your buddies that has had a couple of beers and says, "I'll drive!" you can say, sorry buddy, I didn't know you'd want to drive. I would have had to give the dealer a copy of your license. My bad. Have another beer. Maybe you can drive the next time we do this."

Well like "the family" owns it.  There are a few guys with CDL's that drive it to the stadium for tailgating every home game.  I imagine those guys will do the bulk of the driving.  I know they mentioned that I would drive too but I'm sort of in agreement with Nuts Kicked, would rather not have that responsibility.  Would rather just drink and have fun.

An RV would be sweet.  The last two Fiesta Bowls I've driven from Wichita.  In 1997 I was in my parents Tahoe with just me and the immediately family and it wasn't bad at all.  It's a long drive and there is literally only one city between Wichita and Phoenix (Albuquerque), but we made it.  Stayed overnight in Tucumcari.  On the way back we went up to the Grand Canyon and came back across the Rockies in Colorado.  Game was awesome, trip was awesome.

In 2003, I was with a mix of immediate and extended family.  We had a minivan with 7 people stuffed into it.  I was stuck in the backseat with my cousins and their chewing tobacco.  Overnighted in Tucumcari again.  Was awful.  Game was awful.  Worst trip ever.

But anyway like I said an RV would be sweet and way more tolerable than just cruising down in a car.  You get room to stretch, move around, somewhere to pee, a TV, etc.

I did it in '97 in Tempe.  I nearly dehydrated because I had a crap ton of beer and chips and cheese/salsa.  It was also crazy hot outside that day, there was a tent but the tent was very full and on a blacktop so many people were on the blacktop outside of the tent.  We were also inside a cage, it felt weird.

Took an RV from kc to the Kentucky Derby for a bachelor party. Was incredible. Suggest having just one or maybe two drivers supplied with lots of their driving stimulant of choice (adderall, coffee, weed, meth... whatever) so that everyone else can get super pak'd the whole way.  Make due you have lots of food on board.

It's the best way to travel*...ask bubbles4ksu about it

When you pre-ordered you did so knowing that this could happen, or at least you were supposed to know. The reason being that we were too far down the list and that the $225 tickets were all given to people above us.

If it makes you feel any better we got bumped from $144 to like the upper corner because we have literally no Ahearn points.  Not sure how much ours will be in that section, but at least we'll be in the stadium and it's a lot cheaper than the Cotton Bowl at least.

Your upper corner tickets are probably still $144.  The original $144 option included the upper corner of the KSU section.  The only other option on the order form was $105, and they screwed up by making that an option as those are the student tickets.  We put in for the $105 and got an email a right after the announcement saying we were getting bumped up to the $144 because they screwed up.

i remember being told that i would be getting the $225 seats, being charged and then refunded as of yesterday and told the tickets were no longer available. i don't think it was so much "bullshit" as it was me being deeply saddened that i am not elite enough to warrant field passes.

Yeah, I got hosed too. Was pissed about it, sent a really nice e-mail to the guy who told me that my tickets were secured, and nicely explained to him how disappointed I was about the process. I mean, really, we couldn't fit 20,000 people (if they paid for it) on the lower level?

I'm sorry, just not good logic. I don't know what section I am in yet, but I'm sure I'll know once he replies back to me tomorrow.

If I had enough money, I would fly by private jet to the nearest airport, hire a chopper to get me as close to the stadium as possible, then walk in an hour before kick off. During the game, I'd make sure one member of my entourage bumped someone out of the best hotel suite in the area so my folks could have it. The next day, we'd head back. Then I'd say we had kicked a lot of ass.

Also have 6 extras in section 444 (upper level, midfield) that I will sell, PM me and make an offer if interested (lowest on stubhub in that section is $250)

Finally I have 1 lonely little extra ticket in section 435 that is right next to me  :D that I will sell at face value (comes with the added bonus of getting to sit near me and my friends)

Why aren't you at the skers bowl game?  It is shaping up to be their biggest win in over a decade.

Air travel and tickets were outrageous. It's just as warm here and I can get better coverage watching on the home 70".

Most Husker fans down here live in mobile home parks.  That's the reason he lives in Mesa, that's where most of the trailer parks are.   Invited a couple of husker friends I know over to my house earlier this year, and they thought the pool was a big bathtub and started stripping down and throwing their nasty dirt covered fat asses in the water, poured dish washing soap into the water.  Took me a week to get all the dirt out of the pool, had to replace the filtering system.   Complete poors and trash.

Not sure if anyone has heard but both ASU and UA have mountains called "A" Mountain with the A painted their colors. Whenever a Pac12 team comes to Tucson or Tempe, they paint the A on the mountains their teams colors. I'm thinking some purple A's would look great in Tucson and Tempe.

Good thing they got wasted by Wisky because Stanford would beat NU by 170 points.  Assuming the refs didn't screw them, then it would be 270

There are tons of strip clubs. Last I checked, Jenna Jameson owns and operates one on Scottsdale blvd called Babes Cabaret. Not sure if it's still there or if she is still a part of it or not though. Check out Westgate in Glendale near the stadium for some great food/bars/entertainment. Mill Ave in Tempe is ASU's area with good bars/clubs.
