Title: I'm in
Post by: SdK on November 13, 2012, 10:22:53 PM
I know it's a Division II team. I'm not sure what it means for the future or how this team will play against tougher competition, but I like what I'm seeing from the team. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I like the style with which the team is playing.

I didn't want oscar, and I will cringe for a while when I see him on the sidelines or hear him talk. I will have no problems supporting this team and will try to make it to as many games as I can this season.

Go state.

The toughness leftover from Martin plus a better offense equals a good season hopefully. I'm worried about the future though when Martins players graduate and the toughness is gone.

Delaware beat Virginia, I think we can handle the Delaware whatevers.

Washington lost to Albany.

UNT lost to Harmony Middle School.

FL Gulf Coast beat Miami.

Craziness.

That's just the type of player he is. David Hoskins played insanely tough but the teams he played on were soft.

Def. thought we'd be pretty decent this season.  Pro. would have been predicted around 4th if Frank was still here.  Was a little meh heading into the season from being very  :sdeek: at the chicken nuggets hire, but was going wait and hold off chicken nuggets judgement until next season barring increds success or monumental collapse.  We seem pretty good, fun to watch, and they are our same adorablecats just with a chicken nuggets loving anti-Frank as a head coach.

Gonna enjoy the ride.  Judgment robe comes on next fall.

Guys, my phone flashed a notification at me tonight to let me know that basketball season has started so I checked the score and saw we held some pud team to 20 points.  I have no idea what is going on here and I apologize for having my head up the football team's butt so far.  Not used to this.  Anyway, uh, I'm ready now.  Where is Frank, btw?  What's going on with that?

But man, hearing commentators talk about how "oscar doesn't need to teach these guys how to work hard because Frank already did it for him!" just rough ridin' infuriates me.

I think the defensive and rebounding intensity has been fine so far and I'm not sure where you are getting the "lazier" perception.

I do agree with the oscar/Frank comment that continues to be repeated  though, that's dumb.

Getting back on defense seems little slow, if someone takes a chance at a steal, the recovery seems lacksadaisical. If someone's man has the ball, there's a lot of standing out straight and walking toward the defender. Obviously a lot of it is due to the intense on-ball pressure Frank demanded that drove a lot of people crazy, but still. Like, I feel like Omari and Nino are loafing, too, and can see why they never saw the court for Frank.

Also the fact that I don't care as much and haven't watched the games super closely is part of it.
Title: Re: I'm in

I noticed what MICat is talking about too.  Especially what he said about recovery from steal attempts.  But I don't trust myself to make a bias free comparison to previous teams.

It seemed like a lot of the same on the verge of fouling, if not actually fouling on the ball defense at least to me. I'll defer on every other aspect though, as my game watching abilities come with blinders.

Frank had a better AdjD than oscar three out of his five seasons. I'm referring to effort in general that can't really be measured, though. Things like 50-50 balls, being super intense all the time, and michigancat's general enjoyment.

I disagree about this, with the exception being Gip, Omari, Tay, Diaz and JO.  None of them seem as intense/motivated.  JO looked pretty pumped/motivated last night though so maybe that is a change.  But there are others who definitely seem hungrier that more than off-sets those guys decline/opportunity to show they are lazy/unmotivated.  For example DJamer has brought the funk every second he's been on the floor, Will definitely has a pep in his step he hasn't and Angel was as committed to moving his feet and defending without his hands as ever last game.  Now obviously there was zero opportunity for him to get frustrated or really be challenged on quicks, but he certainly wasn't lacksadaisical.

First game I was able to watch and I was torn inside.  Maybe it will get easier.

Win was fine.  The team we played was terrible.  They had wide open 3s all night and couldn't hit them.  Perimeter defense needs work.  Really excited about DJamer after seeing him play.  Omari had some terrible turnovers.  May have just been lazy late game blowout stuff.  I see what was said about Orris not looking to score at all.  If he is going to be servicable in the future, he needs to find a way to get some garbage points/FTs or something.  His layup was nice.  Angel was glorious.  Will looked more '10 than '11.

Realistically no one wants coach chicken nuggets to fail. We all just expect him to based on past results. He could end up being great, but based on what happened when he got his own players in at Illinois that isn't likely. I expect the team to be good this year. It's the future that I am concerned about.

I hope he succeeds beyond all expectations. But suspect we'll see a replay of his Illinois tenure without quite as spectacular early results.
john q. catfan is perceptive enough to notice lack of NCAA tournaments, bottom half of Big 12 finishes and lots of home losses.
Title: Re: I'm in

If oscar fails, it will most likely be the end of our resurgence into relevance. It will most likely be a slow failure.  Ppl will hold hope and see silver linings for a few years, then ppl will be disappointed for a season or two.  Then, next thing you know, it we will be entering the 2017 season and our team will be predicted to finish in the bottom third of the conference for the second season in a row and no one will care enough to be angry.

Either he fails and we lose BB for what will most likely be a long time, or he succeeds enough so that, in 5-7 yrs, we have enough respect nationally for a new decent coach to take us forward.

oscar failing is the end of this board.

Personally, I would like for oscar to win us a national championship this season, and then move on to greener pastures next year so we can go get a good coach. I'm skeptical that oscar has it in him, though. We are probably looking at a slow, painful, downward spiral for Cat hoops.

referencing the BB board, not goEMAW in general.  My meaning wasn't literal.  The quantity of those participating will be much less if we experience extended failure.

CNS is 100% right on this

There was almost no cat hoops BBSing prior to ksufans.  Even then, it was either next coach talk or threads about the NIT bubble that turned in next coach talk.

I came of age as a bbs'er during the Wooldridge era. It was a great time for me.

Which is preferable.  Then or the last 5-6 yrs?

Well, the last few years. GRCOAT would be like, impossible to top.

GRCOAT was really a tough time for me.  I remember having some post about rather having Martin Xeno than Michael Beasley, and everyone just ignoring it because they were having such an awesome time.

I was still getting over the disappointment of Marques Hayden and was trying to warn people about Beasley.  Really funny looking back.  I was such a product of bad basketball I had no idea how to respond to the new era.

It was an excellent time to BBS. Ahearn board on GPC and kstatefans had some good times.

It was a great time because there were so many Wabashers who were so entranced by the football success they couldn't see the forest through the trees when it came to Wooldridge . . . and I admit I supported Wooldridge at first, just like I have every other K-State coach until they proved they couldn't do the job.   It took me about 1.5 years to completely turn on Wooldridge, maybe a little longer.  But that sounds about right.

Yes, if oscar wins us a national championship, I also hope we can parlay that momentum into getting us a good coach.  Wait, what...
