"They're no young whippersnappers like quasars"
Exactly what I was thinking.

Black holes break my brain when I try and think about them. Nothingness, non-existance, is by it's nature difficult to imagine. I guess that's the point, we are aren't supposed to.
Are black holes God, or the Devil? Or maybe Cthulhu?

I don't think that's accurate Pete. The opposite if anything.

Interesting article, but I fail to see its news worth, or even why would astrophisicists be surprised by the BH's activity - it's in the middle of a decent-sized galaxy with plenty of debris to eat... so? Wake me when it eats a star, or something juicy like that.
This guy calls SD a nervous nellie.

I blame this on the Mayans.

By the way, if you want to look into the face of dark inescapable obliteration, look skyward, between the Sagittarius and Scorpius constellations. You can't see it, but it can see you.

Agreed.
One thing I've always wondered....
If matter is flying into the black hole so fast that even light cannot escape, then don't we know that matter can exceed the speed of light? Or maybe it's just like 2.99E8 m/s anyway? :dunno:
-
I like to think of black holes like teleporters. You enter the black hole and randomly pop out somewhere else in the universe.

it's not flying in so fast it can't escape

Isn't that a wormhole?

Also think anything 'black hole' related should be in Fanning Stuff thread.

Black holes can't "see" anything; they don't have eyes.

that's purely speculation on your part. very dangerous assumption.

Yeah, just because we've never seen a black hole's eyes, doesn't mean they don't have them. You can't see what's in a black hole, it might have 6 eyes for all you know.

it may be one giant eye.
