Title: Sock Talk with Dlew12
Post by: DQ12 on November 03, 2012, 12:18:21 AM
Hey fellas, Dlew12 here.  Let's talk socks.

I'll start.

I hardly ever wear socks.  Most of the time, I'm a boat-shoe or sandle man.  I know, what you're thinking, but no, they don't smell bad.  Once upon a time, my feet stunk up my shoes, but not anymore.  Some people like to wear those little half-way baby socks.  Not me.  All or nothing, I say.

Obviously I wear socks with dress shoes.  Does anyone know why dress socks are super thin?  Seems like nicer socks should have more material.  Why the discrepancy?  Don't look at me.

Other times, I wear sandals.  I like to wear a pair of nice gym-socks with these. NOT!  You don't wear socks with sandals, dummies!

Yesterday I went to Wal-Mart to buy some warm socks because sometimes my feet get cold when I'm at home or in bed.  Wool socks are great!  Sometimes, though, i think they do their jobs a little too well, and my feet get too hot.  Is there a good middle-ground to wear my feet won't be super hot or super cold?  Plus they're kind of itchy sometimes.  But all that being said, I still give wool-socks two thumbs up.  They're like form fitting slippers that don't fall off your feet.

Anyone else have any thoughts about socks?

Love socks. Bringing back some mid calf athletic socks right now. Other than that I wear ankle/not quite no show.

Rarely go out in sandals and don't own boat shoes.

I only wear one type of sock only: black, ankle-high. Even with dress shoes. Because of this, I have (correctly) been labeled a rulebreaker, a bad ass. Think about it.

Sorry I can't give you some better input. Well, besides that you should wear black ankle-high socks and be a bad ass like me.

dunno how i didn't think to mention that i love all types of patterned/striped/etc socks (not like tacky snowmen and crap like that) and legitimately have +/- 100 pair in my rotation.  i can't keep myself from buying a half dozen pair or so whenever they're on sale at the gap or wherever.

i'm otherwise the farthest thing from a hoarder-type person (i guess i actually use my socks though)

I think deafs wear high black socks.  At least, the deaf I worked at Sonic with wore high black socks.  Maybe some kind of signal to let people know they can't hear?  idk.

Are you a deaf, Jake?

Embarrassingly it was only in the last few years that I realized the return on investment with very elite socks is extremely high (also belts).

The thinner smartwools are great socks. Moisture wicking and warm, but not sweaty warm. Good stuff.  Also can confirm that dobber is not a sock, a shoe maybe, but not a sock.

I love coloful/patterny socks. I hit up GAP sales during the holidays and Marshall's all the time for 'em.

i go sockless with boat shoes and loafers. Please tell me your secrets about de-smelly'ing your feet. tia.

i go sockless when i sleep.

i have a few pairs of wools for the really cold days.

i wear the no shows when wearing athletic shoes.

i really enjoy thin dress socks. they feel so sleek and breathable. the thinner the better i say.

No shows for running shoes, crew socks for bball shoes.  Thin dress socks when it's warm out, thicker ones for winter.  Patterns are cool for dress socks.  No socks for deck shoes but I always make sure to buy ones that are lined specially for no sock usage and I'll usually give them the occasional blast with some dr scholls spray to ward off any possible stank.  /thread.

I only own 2 types of socks - no shows and dress socks. I wish someone would invent socks that don't wear out. You have to thrown them away and buy new ones so frequently. Stretched out socks that don't fit well are the worst thing on planet earth.

I feel that I am pretty well versed in socks. I have an entire drawer designated for this little buddies! However, I am a bit perplexed by a few things that I will address below:

Dress socks are pretty expensive. Why? I really am not sure. I mean c'mon... $18 bucks for a three pack? RIDICULOUS.

This brings me to my next difficulty with socks: what is the appropriate number of days that you can wear socks before washing them? Does the underwear rule apply where you are one and done, or can you pull of a jean rule where their fair game if they smell fine?

Dress socks. A kermit the frog sounding old lady once told me that you always match your dress socks with your slacks. Is this a definite rule? If so, how do patterned socks play into this world?

Sleeping with socks. If your not 45 and uncomfortable with your body then you should not be sleeping with socks on. RIDICULOUS.

White tennies. Is it appropriate to wear black ankle socks with these? I'm a big fan of black ankle socks but also a bit fan of white tennies.

Slightly OT here and I know we've already been warned but I don't even care!  Brand new undershirts and boxer are the crap!  If I could wear a brand undershirt, boxers, and socks every single day I would be like the most laid back person ever.  Zero stress.

do you seriously not get an icky feeling when putting them back on?  once socks leave your feet, they're not to go back on until washed

I'm considering throwing away all my white socks and buying like 14 pairs of identical white socks so I never have to fold them. Just throw them in a drawer and grab two when you need them.

My dark socks are tougher because I have brown and black and very elite wool socks.

I don't fold socks but I do tuck them into each other.  (?)  Anyhoo, I have like 4 different types of white socks and like 3 different types of black (no shows) and it pisses me off having to find matches but  also hte having to par them up after washing them.  So, in short, you havea great idea.

So the stores only sell 3 packs of dress socks with 3 different pairs of socks. I would rather have 6 identical socks so it's easier to find matching pairs when necessary. Is it ethical to switch out socks between 3 packs so I end up with a 3 pack of matching socks?

I only wear no shows if I'm wearing shorts or something. I usually wear dress socks, and I work out in crew cuts.

Your problem is that you shouldn't want 6 identical socks.  Get the 3-pack with slight variations and wear them as pairs so that you don't end up with six socks in various states of wear and tear.

IDK, puni... Seems to me that in that situation, you will end up with one pair of unmatched socks after about a month, with the other 4 socks having disappeared

Just make sure you stress to the maid how important it is that she keep track of and pair up all the socks. :dunno:

I've been sporting these 100% cotton Dan Post socks around with my boots and I need to get a verdict.  As you can see on the diagram, there is elastic in several places (arch, mid, and calf) in order so that they stay up throughout the day.  They've worked wonders in that deparment.  However, the elastic works so well that it's a little tight and when I take them off I can clearly see indentations in my skin from the sock ribbing.  Should I be concerned about circulation and, if so, do you have any recommendations on other boot socks that balance comfort and stay-up-ability?  Thanks and I'll listen off the air.

I had a pig aggie sock for the Arkansas thread.

Also, I generally wear black mid-length Nike socks (>90% of the time). And with boat shoes or loafers I generally wear textured or patterned dress socks with jeans or slacks (<10%)

They are to wear with heels or flats so that you can still wear socks but they don't show.
They are one size fits all, but are actually a little too big for my feet.

just a piece of advice, there's a girl i work with that wears these.  i can sometimes see her fake sock sticking out of her shoe and it's really weird to me.  why are you hiding your socks?  if you can't wear socks with your shoes then you need to address the shoe you're wearing, not come up with some pseudo-sock-socklet/not-sock thing.

just be honest with us, with your feet, and with your shoes.  enough of the games, Mrs. Gooch.

mrs. gooch, those socks look great.

here's the deal about these socks, clams. i have some no-show socks i wear with sperrys. because if i don't wear any socks with sperrys my sperrys start to smell bad. obviously my feet don't smell bad. it's an issue with sperrys in general, i like to think.

I get no show socks. I don't get no show socks that cover your calves. Does your lower leg get really cold without them or something?

Yes, this way you can wear socks in the winter under your pants leg with shoes that you don't want the socks to show with.
Also those normal no show socks that only go on your foot have a tendency to fall down around the heel of my foot.

Work on your calves to tighten their grip

you can call them no-shows all you want but you and i both know that they show.  and you and i both know why you're wearing them, - to avoid the stink.  so basically, you're telling all the dudes that your feet stink so you have to wear these false sock things.

just use some gold bond in your shoes and they won't smell.  fake socks are for grandmas to wear, you can't say i didn't warn you.

Normal no show socks don't go up to the calves. That's the problem. My calves are not the problem.

As much as you want to believe it, foot odor is not the issue. Shoes rubbing on my bare feet and causing blisters is sometimes an issue that I'd like to avoid (yeah because my feet are so big they are rubbing on the shoes, whatever).

SmartWool socks are pretty nice.  Bought some for the Cats/OU and Chiefs/Chargers games and they worked pretty great.  Softer and more forgiving on the feet than a normal wool sock I have tried before.  Pretty expensive for a pair of socks though.  Any outfitter or Dicks will have them I would guess.  I got one pair online and one at the Northface store. (owned by VF too)

I bought these the other day for 10 bucks, and have liked them in the past.  They have 70% merino wool which is legit.

Kind of a sock snob.
Smartwool or Thorlos or merino wool/bamboo dress socks or the padded sweet Nike workout socks.

I won't touch the crummy ones that come in a 6 pack.
