Title: overall daily routine thoughts/suggestions thread
Post by: Dr Rick Daris on October 26, 2012, 12:57:31 PM
i am starting to make my days and segments of days as easy and as predictable as possible. because of my job, i wear the same thing to work every day. think of it like a uniform. i have six or seven sets of uniforms. i have stopped making coffee in the morning. too much time. just fill up a glass of water and grab a mixed berry nutra grain bar (strawberry is the grossest) and walk out the door. brush my teeth and shave (if i need to) once i get to work and then go throught my day and then come home. once i get home then who knows? every day is different. too many moving parts/family.

my question is what should i do for lunch? going somewhere seems like a waste because you have to drive there and then drive back and it's frought with possible human interaction. so i've started bringing my lunch. would really like to hammer down one or two things that i can just grab along with my water and mixed berry nutra grain bar on the way out the door? thoughts? what would be easy but good for me? make a bunch of rice on a sunday and then freeze in lunch bags and then grab one, bring to work and then reheat? pbj's? anyone have thoughts here, this is tough.

what's the sitch in regards to access/distance to fridge and microwave at work?  pretty big detail that needs ironed out before we can possibly entertain this, imo.

Oh man.  Are there any resources we could possibly leverage to help get you a decent lunch?  Maybe a loving wife or a super responsible teenager?  I've always felt the best meals are those made with love.

can't involve other people. that would make too many moving parts again and complicate things. needs to be done alone.

I take a chobani greek vanilla and a pack of instant oatmeal. every monday morning I grab 5 plastic spoons and 5 plastic bowls from the cafeteria at my office so I don't have to leave my floor to make my oatmeal or grab a spoon. just hot water from the cofee machine.

Turkey meat on a tortilla with some cheese. Can eat it cold or hot. Takes less than a minute to throw together before you leave in the morning. No mess, no clean up.

this is my breakfast most mornings but you could absolutely do it for lunch too.

3/4 cup frozen berries (raspberry, blueberry, blackberry mix)
1/2 cup plain greek yogurt
3/4 cup spinach
1/2 cup 100% carrot juice (I use bolthouse brand)
1/2 cup acai juice
3/4 scoop of whey protein chowder
one serving size of your choice of fish oil
4 or 5 cubes of ice

blend

if you wanted to you could mix all the ingredients except for the ice the night before and then just throw in the ice and blend it in the morning before work.  take to work and place in fridge.  spend lunch bbs'n whilst slamming your super healthy and delicious smoothie. you can eat some 2% string cheese too if you want something salty.  :dunno:

Take a loaf of bread, deli meats, bottle of mayo...basically all the fixin's of your lunch to work all at once.  Make the sandwich every day.  You look cray cray taking an enormous grocery bag to work, but you only have to do it once every couple weeks.  It is nice not having to worry about bringing your lunch every day.  Running late? Who gives a crap, my turkey sandwich is already in the break room waiting to be assembled.  Sandwich bag?  eff no, I have my dignity!

I've been eating these for the past 6 months:

(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fecx.images-amazon.com%2Fimages%2FI%2F51survMlDFL._SL500_AA300_PIbundle-12%2CTopRight%2C0%2C0_AA300_SH20_.jpg&hash=15cca115b91772b1c22b9d6b82a32ef96c172fe3)

Also come in Mac N Chz, Beefaroni, Spaghetti and Meatballs, etc

45 seconds in the microwave, done. Protip > can be eaten cold with little downside if you are feeling lazy

Don't even need to "grab" one, I keep them in a desk drawer.

Lean pockets are the real deal, my friend.  Pretzel bread chicken and jalepeno are incredible.  Just give it a shot.  I think you'll really like it.

Also, stay the hell away from PBJ, unless you bring all the ingredients to work and make it separately (huge waste of time).  I love PBJ, maybe my favorite food.  BUT, if you premake them, even that mornng, get ready to have a soggy, gross PBJ.

Pizza was pretty decent, soup/chili lacked flavor.  I think I was just a bit excited after the pizza to try what else Amy has to offer and was disappointed.  Now, I am going to rely on Word-of-Mouth first when dealing with her food stuffs.

I've got a nearby fridge, so I usually keep Fage greek yogurt, cottage cheese, grapes, deli thins, turkey, and provolone on hand..

It's a real pain when I forget to re-stock.. always feel pretty ashamed of the fast food trip at lunch..

I want to eat right away, not in 2 1/2 minutes.

Also, don't want to have to monitor stock levels of 3 different products : bread, pb, j.

Are you storing these properly?  Store with the PB on the bottom to help protect bread integrity.  Still not perfect, but if you're doing it the other way this could pay huge dividends.

In my experience, if J is touching ANY bread, for ANY length of time, that bread is toast*.

I would recommend becoming an alcoholic and drinking your lunch.  Easy to carry and I never see guys that do stuff like that eat anything so it must work as a decent meal.

After a while, I bet you can even stomach it warm, so you just keep it in the desk near you.  don't have to get up, see anyone, go anywhere, etc.

you don't have to be an alcoholic to consume most of your daily caloric needs in alcohol, casey.

I keep a desk drawer stocked with granola, oatmeal, raisins, almonds, and sometimes other dried fruit.  In the company freezer I keep a few frozen meals and frozen veggies.  Grap a yogurt, apple, and maybe a sandwich on the way out of the house.  Also keep a bowl, fork, spoon, and measuring cup in the drawer.

For breakfast I have the yougurt with granola.  Oatmeal with raisins are option two if I forget the yogurt or want a change of pace.  For lunch I have the sandwich, apple, and veggies.  The frozen meals are a backup if I don't get a sandwich made and am in a hurry in the morning.  Almonds and dried fruit are there if I need an afternoon snack.  Now that I have reached my target weight and need to add calories, I sometime have M&Ms around to mix in.   I have enough calorie room left after this to eat a pretty big dinner and if I make it to the Y during the day I can eat practically anything I want.

How about a thinner layer of PB on both sides?
Now you may be on to something.

My grandma used to put butter on both slices of bread to keep them from getting soggy.  Like all of her sandwiches.  A couple times she made lunch for me to take to school (for whatever reason) and they were always the worst lunches ever.  I rough ridin' hate bologne you crazy old lady, what makes you think I would like a bologne sandwich with butter?!  So glad that bitch is dead.
