I am not one of those people, but what if they didn't get to decide?  Their folks just always called them that, and it went from their :dunno:

Oh GTFOOH. If someone calls me Jacob instead of Jake, I lose it. I don't even look like a Jacob. I look like a Jake.

First name initial middle name users are far weirder. 90% of attorneys do this.

my parents went an alternative route, leading me to a life where i completely bypass my first name and go by a shortened version of my middle name.  first days of class were always fun

If being called by my first name I prefer the long version.

This is rarely an issue as most address me using the last name

Not the same though.  What goes on your business card isn't the same as what people call you in conversation.

I actually went by my middle name, which my parents decided since it's a kind of sick tradition. I have since said GTFOMF with that junk and now go by my legal first name.

The examples you mentioned all make perfect sense, the correct choice would be to go with Joe, and Will or Bill.  What about Andrews though.  Andy is the only sensible nickname (GTFOMF Drew), but it's kind of a kids name.  Can I get a ruling on that one?

I go by Josh instead of Joshua (obv right?) but we just named our son Anthony and unless he's some big tough guy I full expect him to be called Anthony and not Tony.  Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that's one of those names where using the full name is acceptable and not weirdo-like.

i named my kids names that couldn't be shortened or changed. get out of my face with having your first name not be what people actual call you. or naming a kid something but then calling him something else. like "yeah, his name is samuel but everyone calls him sam".

it's like "hey dipshits. if you wanted people to call him sam and you were planning on calling his sam then wtf didn't you just name him sam"? i mean someone explain that one to me because you can't.

Yep, or people say, "his name is ____, but we'll call him by his middle name." Why don't they just make his middle name his first name?

I have a brother named Joshua, and all of us in the immediate family call him that where as everyone else on planet earth calls him Josh. It can get awkward at times.

yeah, i agree that it was a pretty stupid call on your parents part to name him something and then call him that thing when it was incredibly obvious that everyone else was going to shorten it and call him something different.

Back in my days as a Beefcake/Jock in high school on the freshman football team everyone called me hemmy, now days its purely first name basis.

My nicknames are always longer than my first name. How weird is that?

You're King.

Trim, your nicknames kind of suck.

BTKKK's jealous or The King!

I don't like either of those names. Try again?

I've been called "joe" for about two years now purely because cas4ksu thought it was neat that my last name starts with "J-O-E". Gets confusing at times.

I've been trying to get people to call me P-Dub for a while. It hasn't taken off.....yet.

The shortened version of my first name is Pat. I'm no chick.

No one should go by Pat. Makes me think of the thing from SNL every time.

If I had a dollar for everyone who thought that skit was hilarious to tease me about.  I would buy you and Mr. Gooch lunch.

I have a friend that went by Jimmy up until 3rd grade.  One day he decided everyone should call him James.  It was weird for awhile but everyone accepted his request and called him James.  Looking back that was a pretty boss move for a 3rd grader to pull off.  My name is a pretty famous one and you can't shorten it.  It's also a very boring name, very whitemidwesterny.

What about people whose legal name is the childish version of a name?
Like Johnny or Bobby. Should they shorten their name to a more respectable adult sounding version of their name?

just make something up, that's how my name is.  it's only really a pain on first days of class, starting new jobs, and when people write you checks based on your made-up name.

get creative kk

I remember thinking this for a couple of days with one of my kid's name. A few days later I decided I loved it. Hopefully that will happen for you, or you can just make something up.

My parents liked the shortened version of some names so my birth certificate says Will not William and my sisters says Jenny and not Jennifer.

Everyone I talk to assumes my name is actually William.   :curse: :curse:

No just rowdy bachelor parties.  I've been married 8yrs and have a daughter and possibly another on the way.

Edit:  Before someone infers something.  I have never employed the services of a hooker.

I have never cut my crock so no.

OT: Sometimes I have buyer's remorse over my screen name.  I think it fosters a negative posting response sometimes.
