What an amazing sentence. We have stuff like airplanes and space laboratories and we are talking about it on our computers over the internet. Mind-blowing. Humans, man. So great.
Anyways here's an article from cracked on it:
http://www.cracked.com/blog/5-reasons-you-should-be-excited-about-mars-today/ (http://www.cracked.com/blog/5-reasons-you-should-be-excited-about-mars-today/)
It's one of the best articles of theirs I've ever read, and I think I've read just about all of them. It's the best since the one I read 2 summers ago.

I hope so. but with NASA's knowledge base... maybe spaceX can absorb alot from them?

the next telescope will be much, much better than hubble. originally it was scheduled to go up in 2012, but has been moved back because nasa isn't funded like it deserves.

Hey man, he's just big boned. He doesn't weigh that much.

Did they launch this rough rider in the 50s? Before color cameras????

so how much money did these black and white pictures of red dirt cost the tax payers?

like, practically nothing, bad person.
Also, this is a good thing! They sent it and it worked! Be happy!

Get the eff out.

There was probably some bad person congressmen who made them switch to black and white to cut costs by a couple hundred dollars.

And true to the linked article, there's been very little new coverage of this event.

Yeah, but there were 180,000 people watching it on ustream at 12:30 AM. That's pretty cool.

if i remember correctly, at one point it was around 230,000! but then i wondered why only 230,000 people in the world were interested in watching us land a space laboratory on another planet. humans, man. can't live with them, can't live without them.

Why is this so impressive? is it because of the size of the rover?

I mean, I understand that it's crazy to send something millions of miles away and still be in contact with it, and that the whole thing is crazy..... But is there not another rover on mars already? why is this one so special?

Pretty much. This is a much more complicated, much more advanced object than anything we've sent to Mars.
It weighs about 1 ton and is roughly the size of an SUV.

not just the size, but more the way it landed. 2.5 billion dollars went from 13,000 mph to 0 in 7 minutes, and there was a rough ridin' rover that just dropped it off on the face of the martian surface and flew safely away.

If you want to see the Cigars thread get to 80 gabillion pages, this landing is a pretty big deal.
-
usa wins gold in space exploration event, london 2012.
but really. launched last november, been a WIP for the last decade.

just color everything in red and its fine.
plus think about it. you want something that gives you plenty of data/good observations, but nothing too complicated. these cameras that are black and white are just nav cams for the engineers. they dont need perfect color photos for maneuvering a rock. the other cams will have the pictures we wanna see, though
-
people that think this isn't a big deal just baffle me. rough ridin' baffled.
it also pisses me off that politicians are wasting our time and money on other crap that doesn't matter. NASA should have at least three times the budget every year.
also, pretty sure that it will be sending color images, the black and white was just for quick peeks to make sure nothing was damaged.

Yeah, I agree. We really need China to catch up in the space race so the average American can have some reason to care again.
-
eff planet earth, man. someone actually told me earlier today "instead of spending the money on that, we should be spending it on the wall between us and mexico"
i mean, wtf.

Read the article. We need to find oil on Mars.

pfft...they're uploading pics from a webcam in the arizona desert. nice try nasa.

It would also help if NASA were allowed to promote itself. Currently the only government entity that can advertise is the military.

It's impressive because we launched a spacecraft and landed it on something that is 350 million miles away, moving at about 53,000 mph, and spinning at over 500 miles per hour. Except for a couple small adjustments, the spacecraft was coasting, unpowered, meaning that we only had to make a couple small adjustments to hit our target from when we launched it. We landed within a couple meters of where we were aiming for. Over incomprehensible millions of miles, we missed by a few feet. The degree of difficulty is about a million times what it was to land on the moon. I mean, I know you are joking, but on the off chance that you aren't, you need to be smacked.
-
pretty good chance that the nasa guys are way more fun to party with than bad person military guys.
nasa 1
military 0

eff planet earth, man. someone actually told me earlier today "instead of spending the money on that, we should be spending it on the wall between us and mexico"

Discovery and exploration will probably never be on that list. In 2010, NASA's budget was about $8.7 billion. In its entire history from 1958 to 2011, the total budget was $526.18 billion. In 2010, the U.S. military budget was $663.85 billion. That means that in one year, the military spent $137.67 billion more than NASA has in more than 50.
NASA is barely a drop in the bucket. It should be at least a cupful.

searched youtube for "we stopped dreaming"
NDT does a great job narrating and fighting for nasa funding.
"how much would you pay for the universe?"

You must be joking. My only complaint is that we aren't flying a US flag on top of that thing right now. Would that be too much to ask?

NASA's Curiosity rover has zapped its first Martian rock, aiming its laser for the sake of science.
During the target practice on Sunday, Curiosity fired 30 pulses at a nearby rock over a 10-second window, burning a small hole.
Curiosity's social media team made a reference to Austin Powers when it tweeted, "Yes, I've got a laser beam attached to my head. I'm not ill-tempered; I zapped a rock for science." Then it signed off "#PewPew," a nerd reference to the sound lasers make when discharged.
