how open do you think WVU people on couchsurfing.org would be to a medium-sized group of super pak'd EMAWs invading their couches for the weekend?

tickets are 200 right now if you fly on thursday from MCI. not bad, but the logistics/money of getting a rental car would complicate things.

Planning on doing this from New Orleans. Have had tons of success on hotwire.com recently with cheap rental cars (for my KU friends who can't afford limos), fwiw.

Actually, funny story, I can't rent a car at my age yet. So yes, if you could book a rental car for me that would be great. I'd say skip the insurance since I'm going to be driving it uninsured anyways. TIA

I know in several states that's the case. I believe its a state law, so it could change. They want you to have your own insurance and not be on your parent's anymore. Stupid law, IMO.

According to Enterprise (we'll pick you up), it looks like you can be under 25 and rent in WV.

Should we arrange a couch burning to attend in advance or just play it by ear.  I would really hate to miss out on that.

I think wnk is right that it's just an extra fee.  I remember Hertz had a discount code at one point that would eliminate the fee as a promotion at one time.

Yup, guess its an extra $10 a day if you're under 25 and they won't rent you anything too nice.

FWIW, they wouldn't let me rent a car in Vegas last summer. That's why I said that stuff earlier, I'm not stupid, you guys.

Use an electric razor*. Never shave with a blade if you normally do this though because you will get the worst razor burn in the world which sucks really bad.

*Unless this is about blending in in Morgantown, because then you want to grow a nice long mountain beard.  Make sure it is appropriately white trashy and hillbillyish.

Wait, you guys don't already have plane tickets to Pitt and hotel reserved, round trip was 230 when I got it from KC after the schedule came out.

Two of us headed Thursday and back Sunday if anyone wants to join in on the ride from Pittsburgh sometime Friday and back mid morning Sunday. I sure hope I get to see one of those couches burn!

Where does Huggs drink?

I'll go if I have the chance of sharing a Johnnie Walker Blue with him.

Marshall is on flatland next to the river.  From Marshall to Morgantown is a beautiful mountain drive.

It is a beautiful state, I grew up outside of Huntington and my dad played basketball for Marshall back in the day. Grew up hating WVU  :shakesfist:

Check any alcohol you drink in the state of West Virginia for impurities.  Moonshine that isn't properly brewed can cause you to go blind or even kill you.

There are not bars close enough to bar it up and walk to & from the game.  There are lots of parking lots around the stadium & that part of campus for tailgating though.  The football stadium shares a parking lot with a large hospital, pretty sure its the med school.

Hey yall if anyone has any questions about Morgantown or anything ill try and help out. Hope to see some of you guys in town this weekend.

Is it true that you guys aren't fond of "colored" people?  because one of our posters here is black, and we've already had a scare in Stillwater.  We can't really risk his safety again.

LOL. The real question is are you saying none of our "colored" fans should go to Stillwater?

WV fan - 1
race bait - 0

Well 99% of the fans are great and hospitable, and some will offer yall food and drinks. There is however some fans(mostly, if not all students) that think its hilarious to start dumb crap with opposing fans..so if youre thin skinned when it comes to stuff like that be prepared i guess.
Yall should have a good time though..except for the game.
If anyone is looking for a bar to go to Friday night i would suggest Marios Fishbowl or Keglers btw...

all kidding aside, where should we park and expect to get a good tailgate going? you mentioned the blue lot... i'm guessing that's not open to the general public? we'll probably roll out not too long after noon...

What I do is park at the WVU Coliseum for free, hangout there and tailgate then I take the shuttle over to the game. The shuttle is $4/person. Not everyone there does tailgate, but some do. Most of the big tailgating goes on in the pay lots (Blue Lot for example) I have never done this, but if you drive down Patteson drive(its at the intersection in front of the Coliseum to the left..that is the way to the stadium also), there is a pay lot here and there. I thinks its $10 and there is a little bit better tailgating scene. Those do fill up quick though and they are pretty small, and youd have to walk to the stadium which would be about a 15 minute walk. There are lots of other fans though I know that park and do different things, so if you are looking for something else just go to one of our boards and people there will help out also.
I do know that if you go to the Blue Lot, just walk up and down the aisles of people there and you will be offered food and drinks and some of the best moonshine. Hope that is at least somewhat helpful..

They are open to the public and you can walk around, you just need a pass to actually park there.

Both of those bars are way off the bar scene and overrated. If you're old and just looking for a couple beers, go to one of those places. If you're looking to get destroyed and be where the action is, just head down to High St. That's where the typical college bar scene is at.

Are you seriously driving from Huntington to Morgantown?

Seems like a reasonable route?  :dunno:

It's reasonable, no doubt. But he's right, it's boring as crap.

Fell asleep about 80 miles south of Morgantown when I drove from there to Wichita this summer.

Huntington is the Youngstown, OH of WV.

Someone, please translate this to a town I've been to. Thanks

Salina

I lived in Salina for a few years when I first moved to Kansas and everyone I know who is from Salina thinks it's a dirtball town so feel free to talk crap.  I certainly didn't see anything to make me think Salina wasn't a trashy place.

Our neighbors had their door knocked down by a battering ram and got arrested in broad daylight for dealing drugs (one of them accidentally sold to an undercover cop ).  Before they got busted, those neighbors had huge parties almost every night that always ended with a few fights in the middle of the street.  Multiple people gut DUIs right in front of our house and we lived in a residential area that wasn't on any main streets.  Our white trash neighbors abandoned their house one day and a couple weeks later some meth heads broke in there to strip the place of all the copper.  They also broke into the busted down old car in their backyard and stole the radio.  We watched them scurry around from our backyard.  They asked my roommates and I if we were going to call the cops and we said "No, but we'll shoot you if you ever try to break into our house."  They thanked us for the warning, agreed not to break into our house and kept looting copper.  I know a guy from Salina who made meth and moonshine in one of the trailer parks, he ended up moving to KC and I don't know if he is continuing operations there.  Every single girl I know who is from Salina either has had multiple STDs, multiple kids (usually with multiple fathers too) or both.

Update. Did penn state on Thursday night. Campus is elite but bar scene was pretty meh. The fillys were pretty terrible in general. Think flood aggie mixed with emporia state chicks. Drove all over pa md and wv. It's all the same. Hills and fall covered trees, crappy towns here and there. Plenty of mining equipment and stuff everywhere.

Morgantown is a huge pain in the ass the get around. Tiny roads that never go straight and you're always going up and down over hills. High street was pretty decent, much better than state college but still not Aggieville. First guy we met said his grandpa was a coal miner. As expected. Got several free drinks, drank lots of beer and woke up in our hotel which was nice. Overall everyone has been pretty nice. Only one douche and one tough guy.

1. West Virginia is the Cracker Barrel Empire of the world..they get real butt hurt when you make fun of it.
2. Their first down cheer/clap/chant isn't AS weird as WPS of the pigaggies...but is still stupid.
3. The stereotypes are true....those hicks make incredible moonshine
4. Total pussies when it comes to intimidating opponents' fans. i didn't once feel uncomfortable...and believe me...i tried.
5. Trailer park right next to the stadium...yuck

Domestic runs about $7.50 or $8.00. Always nice to have a brew during the games. Especially when we're in the midst of getting our asses handed to us.

Got to Fat Daddys around 3pm and grabbed some wings and pitchers, didn't get down to the stadium as soon as i would have liked, so i was only able to get a pepperoni roll and no shine, took the PRT there, which was pretty cool.  Everyone before and after the game was really nice (though i got asked about "that mask guy" several times and it appears many people can't take a joke) but during the actual game there were some yahoos that started getting pretty fired up after the domination began... actually called a pair of stadium staff members to tattle on 2 of my friends that seat jumped up 4 rows to sit in some empty seats next to where i was sitting, but then the asshat left 5 minutes in the third.  We tried asking him "Where he was going?" and thanking him for reminding us of the rules but he didn't have anything to say anymore... i also think he wanted to let us know that he wasnt going to need his seat anymore, since he also didn't object to us asking if we could sit there.

I wasn't there, but the stories on gopo match these pretty well.  Everybody was nice and paranoid about how our fans were enjoying Morgantown.  The students are assholes but alumni were cool. Instead of trying to fight cat fans they fought each other in the stands which seems like it would be a lot of fun to watch.

They have a lot of warts but in the end I'm pretty optimistic about this budding relationship.

I read through a lot of their scout board and they appreciated Bill talking to Geno after the game, the team leaving as a unit at halftime, Harper telling Tyler to stop celebrating, etc.  They also hated on their own players for jawing at midfield and celebrating while getting blown out.

Great game. Tailgating was fun. I was really surprised on how nice all of them were. Moonshine tastes like rubbing alcohol. But it definitely does the job just fine. After the game, multiple WVU fans came up to congratulate our group and tell us how good we are. (no duh, right?)

Their stadium reminds me a lot of Iowa State's layout wise.

We were all sitting in the K-State section, but I guess a few sections over there were a pair of WVU fans beating the crap out of each other. Really wish I could have got to see that. Also, saw Justin Tuggle's dad Jesse. Mountain of a man.

Can confirm everything that has been said about most WV fans being very congenial and inviting. Worst part was drunken EMAW chick in front of us spilling beer all over wife and I. Thought for a second the Mrs. was going to go all  :chainsaw: on the bitch's ass, and I was all  :excited: , but she held her cool. Of course there was lots of  :ksu: and  :lynchmob:, plus tons of random high fives. During one, dude a row down held his hand up right in front of his face and, of course, his buddy promptly high fived him giving him a backhand to the nose. I  so hard. True story.

The back of my head is in this pic!!

Also, will echo that everyone was pretty nice.  Pepperoni roll was delicious.  The trailer park right across the street was odd....but I found it more odd that it only had 18 trailers, a few of which looked vacant..  Also, there as a decent looking house all boarded up across the street.  Someone buy that thing and fix it up!!  You could rent that thing out and make a fair chunk of change.

Press box:     Needs a logo or something on the outside of that thing.  Looks even more small timey because of this.

You can buy beer in the stadium, and there were very few incidents / lipping off between fans.  There were many WVU fans sprinkled about the KSU section.  Little to no trash talking that I could see.  There was a fight several sections over from me.....looked like a middle aged WVU fan was pissed off about something.  Do not think it involved any EMAWs.

Student section bailed out BIG TIME after we INT'd Geno and then immediately put up another TD.  The few remaining students started an "overrated" chant late in the 4th quarter.

Did not see one couch go up in flames.  I feel my trip was somewhat incomplete because of this.

Hopefully will get the chance to go back.  It was a good time.

Pittsburgh airport:

Friday: ate at morgantown brewery. good food and beer. raged balls and tore apart the dance floor later that night at bent willie's (the name makes more sense now  :fatty:)

Saturday: woke up still drunk and discovered $1 draws at bent willie's and also discovered that they make awesome pizza. then checked out fat daddy's for a bit. took the free tram thing from downtown to the stadium. you guys gotta see these things, they're like 20 foot long box cars that magically take you to your destination. met some friendly students on there and had some good back and forth trash talk.

right when we got to the stadium, there was a little "eff the mask" chatter from some students but right when we got to the blue lot we were greeted like kings and given food and beer and most importantly, moonshine. very good stuff, potent as hell but doesn't burn like typical liquor. i don't think i can emphasize enough how friendly pretty much everybody was. "need a beer?" "need food?" "if you need anything just come back by" party passed a bottle of jameson with some coal aggies and yelled "eat crap pitt" more times than i can remember.

obviously, the game was an absolutely perfect experience. crowd was buzzing at the beginning, but i definitely had the feeling that we were ready to go. there was a fight between two wvu fans. i looked over a couple sections and saw what looked like a 60 year old man running down the bleacher and pretty much diving into another dude in the stairs. i later found out from a wvu fan that just before he dove at the guy, he screamed "let's dance!"

post game, they were just pissed about their defense. didn't hear much trash talk. drive today sucked.

Actually was a really nice drive. As we admired the fall foliage just outside Morgantown, were cut off by a couple WVU fans in a jeep that gave us the finger. Thought was a sign of things to come, but as all have said, the fans there were pretty much obsessed with being nice.

Went to Mario's Fishbowl on Saturday. Everyone clapped at us when we walked in the door, which seemed like a weird intimidation tactic. Solid wings and beer though.

Tailgating scene was pretty impressive. Everyone was quite friendly. The WVU fans love shotgunning beers. Pretty much every party offered us beers to shotgun. And the moonshine was legit. Ones with lime in the bottle were the best. The group nearest our car all had horrible acne. Like 15 people, 14 of whom whose faces were pepperoni rolls. Was strange. I guess they stick together?

Inside the game, great atmosphere. You could tell we were going to romp from the moment the players walked on the field. As WVU did their intro prior to running on the field, Klein and the Cats slowly and confidently just walked to the sideline like complete bosses. WVU fans during the game were pretty disgusted with their own defense, but never tried to make us feel uncomfortable. A few of them before leaving said they hoped we win the conference. Overall, great road venue.

My ramblings about Morgantown.  If you go straight to the bottom we still won.

No one cares about the Penn State thing on thursday so we will start our story off with Friday rolling into Morgantown right about 1.  The roads are all really narrow and rather hilly and akward other than the ones right by the stadium.  There just wasn't any room for them to make them better or wider i guess.  Went in to Gibbie's for a little lunch and tried a few beers that we wouldnt have around KC.  The fried pickles and turkey something sandwich were both very good.  Found our crappy Super 8 and checked in knowing that we werent going to see the place sober so it was ok.  Got a cab downtown right about 5 and headed to Fat Daddy's.  $1 pints till 6 and $2 after that.  Cheap beer was flowing and their scantily clab bartenders were keeping our glasses full.  Lots of old tucks and local college kids there earlier on since the $5 cover early on got you a buffet of wings soft pretzels and other junk, we shouldnt have ate lunch and waited for it I guess.  Once everyone we knew got there and we had already had about 5 WVU fans tell us where their tailgates were and that we had to try their shine cause it was the best in the state, we headed out to see some other bars.  Went by Chic n Bones and it was a little lame so we ended back up at Gibbie's which was shaped like a porters but felt more like an O'Malleys.  Ended up taking several shots with some local WVU student and a kids dad and his dads buddy from NY.  As stereotypical long islander as you could find.  Heavy accent and knew nothing about college football.  Pretty sure neither of them have left the island more than 5 times in their life.  Ended up getting a cab to the super 8 sometime later on though i am not sure when that was.
Woke up as excited as we could possibly be and watched everyone on gameday pick the cats and play with Transformer figurines while we ate the crappy continental breakfast and overheard some WVU fans talking about the mines.  Cabbed it downtown around noon and met up with some friends at Fat Daddys for lunch. Even gameday pints were only $2 so we slugged plenty of those.  Hopped on the PRT thing around 3 and headed over to the stadium.  Grabbed a 12 pack at some crappy gas station a few blocks from the stadium and wandered around in the rain over to blue lot.  Heard plenty of "we want the mask" type stuff from drunk students but they were all intimidated by the purple and steered clear of us.  Ended up finding a tailgate that had a couple people in purple so we just started talking to them and migrated around to a few tailgates with mostly WVU folks.  Watched the WVU team do their "Man Walk" into the stadium, they knew they were going to get dominated, i could see it in Geno's eyes.  More food, beer, and shine was offered than we could shake a stick at and I enjoyed pepperoni rolls and stromboli.  Had a few pulls of the Jameson and met Emawblast   Couple of out new Coal Aggie friends showed us around to a few different tastes of shine.  Had watermelon, plain, and apple. Plain is horrible, flavored isnt too bad.  Got over to our spots in the game and snagged a few brews.  Cheered our faces off and laughed as the home fans walked out of the stadium early.  Good atmosphere and decent stadium, i like the shape of the stands and how its pretty tall on both sides.  It was pretty scant on amenities but it didnt matter since you could buy plastic bottles of brew.  After the game we walked over to some bar right across the street and were the only ones in purple in there it seemed like.  Hopped the last PRT back downtown and had a few celebratory shots before we were too drunk to stand and cabbed it back.  Drive to Pitt and plane rides home were horrible.  Lots of EMAW in the airports.  Still not 100% yet today.  Was well worth it and I would say the trip in total rivals the good times we had at the Cotton Bowl thanks to the blowout W.  Cant wait to start the Roadtrip to Fort Worth thread.

Okay #1 based on these stories, my trip to Morgantown was 300x more mumped up than anyone else's.

Gotta bill some time, so will be back with stories later, but here is one to start.

The cab situation in Morgantown is all kinds of mumped up.  They have these "cab stands" you have to wait at.  Penn State BF and I had to get in a cab with this rando family, even though another cab was coming.  The family had a dad and a son and a daughter.  We get into this cab van that sounds like it is going to blow up.  The dad tells the cab driver they are making two stops.  So we drive through some crazy back hills on campus and end up at WVU Beta.  Son goes in to the house and is gone for like 15 minutes.  We are just sitting in the cab while dad and daughter tell us how they want to rough ridin' kill us for being Kstate fans.  Penn State BF is like well I am actually a Penn State fan.  And then the cab driver starts yelling at him for raping children and tells him he is lucky he is all the way in the back seat.

Son comes back with a bag of pills and a bunch of other stuff.  Looks real mumped up.  Then we drive them to some crazy house that has all the windows boarded up.

Then we are like ok guy can you take us to our hotel now?  And he is like you are lucky I don't drop you off in the middle of nowhere for raping children.  But somehow we made it back.

It wouldn't have been weird if it was an actual cab stand.  It was just a sign.  No cabs would pick us up anywhere but the cab stand.

And the cab stand would move around from night to night without warning.  you had to find some teenager in an orange jump suit.

Every wildcat i saw was enjoying Morgantown a ton.  Pretty similair experience to MHK with the bars all being right by each other and the stadium being a little ways away.  The filly's were much better than at Penn State but we were also there on a huge gameday.  Confirmed that the cab stand moved and it was just some poor coal miners son that could barely speak english.  We had to share cabs both nights and wait over an hour to get picked up from our hotel at noon on Saturday.  The drivers were about as dumb as a 3rd grader from Ogden and the cars wont make it until December.  Since they only have one cab company in town it was their way or hike on busted as back roads several miles.

PRT- http://www.google.com/search?q=prt+morgantown+pics&hl=en&tbo=u&rls=com.microsoft:en-us&tbm=isch&source=univ&sa=X&ei=Ol-FUMDNJKG82wXnpICQBQ&ved=0CC4QsAQ&biw=1024&bih=615

That should take you to pictures of the PRT which explains a bunch of it.  One station is like 2 blocks away from downtown and then it drops you 4 or 5 blocks from the stadium.  Goes pretty quick and there are lots of those little deals.  Its basically an electric car that drives on a little elevated sidewalk.  You just click the button to where you want to go on game day and the little sign pops up to where that next PRT is going.  It only goes to where the sign says and there are no other stops that it makes.  Obviously on gameday people were only going to two spots.  They stop running at like 11 or 12 (i cant remember but i do know we got the second to last one back downtown because they were saying how lucky we were as they were closing the station down)

Older, and much more condensed. More difficult to get around, skinny roads. Traffic gets really congested. Goes without saying but it really is very hilly. It makes you realize how used you've gotten to living in a pretty flat part of the country. In terms of people, it's probably pretty similar. Student population has more of a northeastern vibe with a lot of Pittsburgh/Jersey I think. The tailgaters/alumni were absolutely hillbillies, but I didn't see that as a negative. They are just really nice hillbillies who talk funny.

I had some WVU fans sitting behind us in the visitors section. One dude threatened to knock my nose into the back of my head because of the shirt I was wearing.  I was so horribly confused.  All it said was K-State on the front and "The best team in Texas" on the back.  I don't know why the hill people got so bent out of shape about it.  Also this fat lady expressed her extreme hate for the mask.  All the young people said eff K-State, all the old people were super happy we were there and thanked us for making the trip.  Great experience overall. Would do again.

You should've started walking 2 miles back to the Hampton Inn like we did and then chat up some bored cops who would give you a ride.

The drug dog was in the back just stone cold chillin' while me and the cop shot the crap while my friends shot the crap in another cop car. Also the cop pulled over to the side of the road and slowed down so my friends could clown these other two guys we went to the bars with for walking back. Cop's all, "I'm gonna drive slow and roll down your windows so you can make fun of these guys for walking, and call them losers, and stuff. And then we'll speed away."

Cost us zero dollars.

When we pulled into town, we went to Chili's (top shelf margs!)

The wait to get into chili's was like two hours or something Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!), so we sat at the bar.

After about 5 minutes, two guys dressed in WVU stuff sat down next to us.  One of the guys turns to us and says, what do you guys know about GO MA.  Me: GO MA?  fans: you know the message board website.  Thankfully, they started laughing and said that those guys had really "got their goat" and bought us a round of drinks.

If SB's story really happened, then that place isn't nearly as bad as I thought.  Cool cops are such a rare treat.

Apparently not all cops in WV are so cool.

Jesus, man. It took 5 minutes before the WV cop thing was mentioned! Pretty funny video though.

The part CFoD is referring to is at 5:06.

i just caught up w/ Sr. MeatSauce tonight... much of the same, fans were incredz, etc. but......

MeatSauce aunt attended first football game (of any level since Garden City HS 1957.  yes 1957), and could not grasp concept of football games.  Tre Walkers parents parked/grabbed shuttle from next to my parents in the "coliseum" parking lot, but couldn't stay long for the tailgating because they "had to get this pack of Skittles to Tre."  According to Dad MeatSauce stories, Tre's parents are as adorable if not more than #50.

It's one of the better road trips I've ever done. Wedding got in the way this year. I have a hotel still and could probably cancel then you could call to get it if you wanted. Wouldn't get the same rate which would suck
