Hey Dudes - So I'm in a little bit of a dilemma here and need some advice...
I work in the architecture industry and recently resigned my position in MHK to take a job closer to home/friends/family in Columbia, MO. It's a good firm with great benefits (i.e. 3 weeks vaca, flex time, comp time, professional support, etc...). Where the mind eff comes in is that two days after accepting the offer for the job in Columbia a firm in San Antonio offered to split the expenses to have me come down for an interview. I have already made the decision to go interview and see what they have to say but I wanted to hear some other people opinions on the two cities...
Any words of wisdom would help a brotha out.

san antonio seems pretty great and is really affordable. i'd go there. what is the name of the company you are interviewing with there?
-
tell them you will interview if they pay for all expenses. splitting them is kinda bush league and seems like a good tell as to what kind of place it would be to work for.
-
SA 4thewin. Not even close.

sd brings up a very good point here.

good grief. you might want to delete that post. don't say the company name on here

Yep. SA's river walk:
-
The home/friends/family you left MHK for, taking them to San Antonio?

definitely don't split the expenses. if they are serious enough about you as a candidate then they should pay for it. if they don't want to pay the expenses then go enjoy columbia, mo.
-
San Antonio is a big city, and is rapidly expanding. On the other hand, Columbia is a smaller city on the brink of a meth lab holocaust.
Your call though
-
I would choose Columbia.

on the other hand you are pretty much guaranteed to be the smartest person in Columbia

Agreed. Check out the Columbia La Hacienda and report back.

san antonio is 10x better as a city

Thanks brah - didn't think that through fully

Splitting expenses is only good when you go to lunch and they order a salad and you order a steak.

So you are moving away from Manhattan to live closer to family in Columbia. And you are wanting a job in San Antonio? Why do you hate Manhattan?

*2nd smartest. Quinn Snyder still owns a vacation home in Columbia.

Good point, luken_mukens.

Texans vs Missourians
Seems pretty simple to me, but then again it sounds like you are used to Missourians.
-
i have some san antonio and austin based architecty type insiders. want me to try and dig some dirt on these guys cam?

We both know that no one reads your posts, I wanted everyone to understand what was going on.

Complicated answer but it really comes down to professional growth, firm size/atmosphere, long-term potential.
I love Manhattan but the tucks in this town have kinda worn me down (i.e. public transportation, FPD, shortsightedness, etc...) - plus being great smelling and in my mid 20's manhattan is lacking in the urban professional resources that i need to reach my full potential. If i was mid 30's with a family manhattan would be great but I have some wild oats to sow still.
The family/friends thing was just another reason, not the only one. I needed an escape and columbia provided that... in terms of what i really am looking for (big city, lots to do, etc...) San Antonio fulfills that better.
-
taking the columbia job was stupid. "oh, hey, I really want to get out of this town and move to the big city and meet single professionals so I'm moving to columbia, MO: population less than Topeka"
-
taking the columbia job was stupid.
I think we've hit the root of the problem.
-
I merely accepted their employment proposal... I haven't "taken" or started the job yet.
And while I can't believe I am going to defend Columbia, it definitely has more resources than Manhattan or Topeka.

But definitely not enough to justify "accepting an employment proposal" there when you want to live an city with decent transit and young professionals.

BTW - You all may or may not know the current climate for architecture but the fact that I have three jobs to choose from is kind of in and of itself a miracle...
Of all college graduates, architecture majors have the highest unemployment by far and the rest of the profession is no better. So the fact that they offered to split expenses, while bush league, is astounding.
I appreciate the bluntness and honesty, not that i didn't expect that from you hooligans
Being from Missouri I know what to expect... alot of methed-out GED low lifes that root for mizzou because it is the only d-1 school in the state - but as far as college towns go at least Columbia tries to be a little progressive and take of the students.
San Antonio has it all - bars, population, riverwalk, austin, hot latinos, etc... It is in Texas though so everyone will have that texas-ego
-
You still have the MHK job to choose from?

Yeah, I am selling my home and have been looking at the market locally here. It is insane the diff in what you get in KS and TX for the same money. Insane.
Make up your mind before you check this out, otherwise it will make up your mind for you.

Pfft, it's TX. Spit handshakes are the only formal copy of a receipt available.

No kidding. Leaving MHK was a big mistake, but don't compound that by moving to San Antonio. Short commutes, friendly faces, and job security ftw.

For property you gotta slap the other guy on the shoulder twice also.

No state income taxes in TX.
-
What offices are you looking at/resigning from? The stability of those should give you the answer. I really wouldn't trust Columbia or San Antonio for lots of stability right now. I've survived several rounds of layoffs at my firm. It's rough out there.

I've heard that as well. I've also heard that other things are a little bit more expensive to compensate for it, like car registration, insurance, etc. Obviously if you make a crap ton of money it is cheaper for you but if you make an average salary it turns out to be close to the same.
Just what I've heard, I'm no BigDCat...
