Title: Angel Calls Frank Martin A Dickhole Who He Didn't Want To Play For
Post by: steve dave on June 07, 2012, 04:32:46 PM
Angel Rodriguez thinks his game will fit right in with new coach oscar Weber

When a new coach arrives, few positions face more change than point guard. With that in mind, Angel Rodriguez had a little thinking to do when Frank Martin left for South Carolina and oscar Weber was hired at Kansas State.

The sophomore point guard had a successful first season with the Wildcats, and became a starter as the season went along. But his up-tempo style, his aggressiveness and his tendency to create his own shot aren’t for everybody.

Some coaches like their point guard to shoot first. Others like their point guard to pass all the time.

Ultimately, Rodriguez decided his game would fit in – and maybe even thrive – with Weber’s coaching style. Two months after the coaching change, he has no regrets.

“I am loving everything about this new coaching staff,” Rodriguez said following a practice earlier this week. “They are nice people. I like their system. It just seems like we are going to enjoy playing for Coach oscar and his people.”

Of course, it took him a week or so to come to that conclusion. While never publicly saying he was considering a transfer, the idea crossed his mind when he took a relaxing trip home to Puerto Rico and saw his family for the first time in six months.

“It was something that I had to think about and talk to my mom and my people about,” Rodriguez said. “It wasn’t just something I was going to decide right away. It did take me a little bit of time, but at the end of the day I’m just trying to make the best decision for myself and my family. oscar was a nice person and he deserved a chance. That’s why we decided to stay.”

Rodriguez quickly warmed to Weber because of his success coaching guards over the years, and his friendly demeanor. Rodriguez said he also grew fond of K-State since committing to the team almost entirely because Martin was the coach out of high school.

“I was a starter in the Big 12 as a freshman,” Rodriguez said. “Not everyone has a chance to do that.”

With all but two scholarship players returning, Rodriguez will be part of a strong team next season. The idea of starting over somewhere else was anything but ideal.

“I told Frank, ‘You know I’ll never be mad at you. You have to do what you think is right for you and your family,’” Rodriguez said. “But then after I said that I had to think about myself. As much as I love him, I just didn’t want to sit out a year and everything was really looking good here. There was really no reason for me to leave.”

Rodriguez hasn’t had a lot of time to adjust to Weber’s coaching style yet. He suffered a tendon injury in his thumb while committing a foul late in a season-ending loss to Syracuse, and he had to undergo surgery. He has spent part of his offseason recovering from it, and says he still isn’t allowed to make passes in practice.

But he is getting healthier every day. And he can already tell he likes Weber’s offensive system.

“I think it will be a great system for me,” Rodriguez said. “That’s actually one of the reasons why I stayed. They are different type of coaches. Coach Frank was a little bit more aggressive. They both have great philosophies. They both have good things. But I think Coach oscar will be, I guess, more flexible at times and let us play a little bit more.”

What happens when they finally play a team full of people who have someone calling them selfish and weak all off season and it blows up in their face?  What then?  I mean, other than oscar throwing them under the bus, what then?

it's more than fine.  it's fantastic.  we know what we got when oscar was shoved down our throats.  we can hold out hope we got something much better with 2/3 of the staff.

Some of them might literally cry on the bench during a game in which they're being blown out by a shitty team.  Coach oscar demands emotional sensitivity.  If a team like say Nebraska puts it square in your butt without any lube you go ahead and cry because you know what it's painful and that's a natural response.  Hs and Cs, guys, Hs and Cs.  Hugs and Custards from here on out.

Dude, have you not paid attention?  This is the least surprising and most predictable thing ever.  Coach oscar isn't the guy that will have players dislike him. I'd be willing to bet he's never had a player go on record with horrible things to say about Coach oscar.  He is the type of coach that will tell you atta boy and then take you out for chicken nuggets.

Even players who feed off of screamers won't be pissed at the easy going guy.  No one ever doubted whether or not the team would buy in.

I always loved it in grade school when I'd show up to class and there would be a substitute teacher.  Those were some of the best days ever.

The only thing I keep thinking about is how interesting it's going to be to watch a bunch of players who have (mostly) shown limited ability to jump shoot play for a coach who loves jump shooting. Maybe they'll be better at it since their legs won't be tired from grueling practices and playing defense and escaping house fires.

I'm sure they'd all rather have it. But some of them make up for not recruiting great shooters by playing gritty d and pounding the o-boards. Not sure Weber will emphasize those things to the extent necessary. But Southy and Sprads and Irving will no doubt push us to victory with their outstanding jump shooting.

The answer to your question is that oscar has to have an enforcer as an assistant coach.  The only question is who will that be--will it be Lowery?  Frazier?  Will oscar be able to enforce a discipline that when a player comes running to him, he tells them they're crying to the wrong cat, and re-direct them back to the enforcer?  So many questions, so few answers.

Is it just me, or does this quote make it seem like Frank asked Angel to come with him to SC? Isn't that a major violation? Shouldn't SC be on like 15 year probation or something?

Frank and Hugs both basically depend on good jumpshooters.  The rebounding and defense help things outu when we have crappy shooters, but both coaches depend on jumpshooters, especially jumpshooters who can create their own shot.  Or maybe im wrong.

“They are nice people. I like their system. It just seems like we are going to enjoy playing for Coach oscar and his people.”

"oscar was a nice person and he deserved a chance. That’s why we decided to stay.

Angel stayed. I know this and am eternally grateful. Nothing about a coach being nice, or players staying simply because he is nice, reassures me at all.

Nice will be nice for the tucks next year when the team is winning.

Nice will not be nice for the players under the bus, or the lack of winning that is coming.

Sorry... I got all excited when I saw this article that Angel would give some insights about oscar's offense and give me some kind of substantive reason for optimism. All I got was "I haven't been around him much, but he's nice... oh and he likes guards. That's cool"

Yes, let's be as negative as possible. That makes sense.

There is a valid argument that's been made that those who are used to Frank's style of coaching would be relieved by an approach that is far softer. The conclusion can very reasonably be that these quotes from Angel, JO, and co are in no way really indicative of oscar Weber's future success. But to try to turn it into a negative is just asinine. Sorry.

“They are nice people. I like their system. It just seems like we are going to enjoy playing for Coach oscar and his people.”

"oscar was a nice person and he deserved a chance. That’s why we decided to stay.

Sorry.

He can be as negative as he wants. It's fine if everything he says is negative and all his posts are negative and it's fine if he turns every little thing into a negative. You can't stop him.

I hate when players like the coaches. Respect the crap out of them, but don't like them.

Love allows for manipulation.

Fear is ignored/overlooked by stupidity.

Respect is best.

None of our players loved or respected Frank.  Feared & hated was his niche.

Who wouldn't? The best thing about that movie idea is the potential for a sequel. I would imagine that in Angelic Meadows II: Samslam, Angel would continue running through the meadow in Sound of Music, only Daniel Sams would be throwing 90 yard bombs to him. Special effects would be used to morph the footballs thrown by Sams into basketballs in midair, and Angel would dunk the crap out of the balls that Sams keeps chucking to him throughout the movie.
