Title: Poor people given sacks of money
Post by: 06wildcat on June 01, 2012, 08:47:33 PM
Having my first close-encounter with non-emaws and large sums of money. Mrs. 06's parents are about to inherit a moderate amount of money and it's amazing to watch just how fast they've gone from being poor but relatively sane to batshit crazy poor.

Anyone else ever witness anything like this?

Yes, it's fantastic to witness. sdmom will sometimes advise these types on tax implications of their windfalls which they inevitably ignore and have their new rv, atvs, misc. other new property foreclosed on. Every one of them ends up just as poor as they were before.

Had a friend that worked in a bank downtown. He always loved tax time. People would come in with their checks and would then be back within the week complaining about overdraft charges. They would also use some super fast/ripoff return method that took a huge % of the tax return so they could blow the money 3 days faster than if they waited for the normal return to come.

I witnessed a lady blow through a $250,000 life insurance policy payout with nothing more than a $15,000 mobile home and a used ATV to show for it when they repo'd everything in less than a year.

It's already gone. Stocks, land, smaller assets...all gone. Took six weeks.  :frown:

Was just informed the inlaws plan to pay off their current house, tear it down and build a new one. They apparently bought it 23 years ago for 65k and currently owe 60k after refinancing it 4 times since originally buying it.

They sold the land, and now have big plans to spend all the proceeds as fast as possible, which includes spending essentially 60k on 1 acre to build a new house where the old one is.

There's rumblings of purchasing a tractor for this 1 acre estate of grand proportions too. It's simply amazing.

oh, i misunderstood.  i thought they came across a cash windfall and purchased land.  not came across a land windfall and exchanged it for cash.

06wildcat, does your wife have a lot of siblings, or do you get this marvelous inheritance all to yourselves?

Two other siblings that are doing nothing to stop the spending spree. (Since they've never left western Kansas they will benefit, the oldest still lives at home).

My favorite is when people bitch that their relatives/friends didn't leave them crap when they died; because you know, they were tight ass penny pinchers when he/she was around and didn't give anyone a dime, but left millions to some church.

Oh man, yes.  There was some guy on the radio a couple years ago.  His dad was a janitor for a high school for something like 40 yrs, kicks the bucket, then donates a couple mill to the school and leaves kids nothing.  Everyone was shocked because this janitor had that kind of dough.  They interviewed the guy's kid on the radio and he said that whenever his dad would take him anywhere(from teenaged on) he would make him split gas money, dinner cost, etc.

The guy would charge his highschooler kids money to eat and go places, but left mills to his old employer who made him clean up kids vomit and stuff.

Pro tip, a lot of poor people aren't poor just because of their income amount.

This janitor guy sounds great. He earned that money. His kids can earn their own money, too. Good for him.
