i'm a licensed crane operator, and part of a previous job was helping the operators of tower cranes service and inspect their cranes. i've done exactly that (not at that height, about 200-300 feet). i love heights though.
i want to do this someday.

the contractor I used to work for had a tower erection and maintenance side. A couple of the guys had erected and climbed 1500+' towers. One guy drove non-stop to Arizona once from Kansas to climb a 1700' tower to replace a lightbulb, then drove home.
They told tales of how they used to make extra money buy renting a car when they got to the site, living in it while working. They'd take off the wheel and attach a rig they'd made to use the car as the winch for lifting parts and tools to the top of the towers.

That scared the crap out of me. So did some of the scenes in Ghost Protocol.
