Title: Beekeeping tips
Post by: CHONGS on May 17, 2012, 08:53:44 PM
so I am going to create a beehive and start making cactus flower honey and

1) selling at local farmers markets
2) fermenting the excess honey into a delicious semi-dry mead

I am going to begin catching bees over the weekend. any tips on bees to try to get?  should I get them a box or something to live in?  where can i find bee food?

I think you use smoke to get them to make honey for you.  That's what they did on Bee Movie.  Have you tried using smoke?

how many cactuses (sp?) should I get do you think?  I mean are we talking hundreds?  I don't think it will matter what kind maybe a variety pack would be best.  I wonder if this will even be legal?   My neighbor has this kid and dog who always run into my backyard.  These bees will be mean (cactus flowers anger up bee blood) so I know they will get stung, but that's gonna cost me some bees.  Maybe I could do this in my basement...

what kind of smoke?  I have a lot of old newspapers I bought at a garage sale that I can use.  But these bees might require a wood smoke like apple or hickory.  If I took some marijuana and smoked it like a cigarette would that make the bees want to make more honey or less?   I could put the bees next to my fireplace...

Maybe you could borrow 'clams BGE and smoke them in there?  I'd use hickory to give the honey a rich flavor.

I don't think bees are allergic to cactus flowers, but I will double check.

I would use applewood smoke for the sweetness. I think you should do it in your backyard.  Bees and Cacti will send a clear message to this kid that your backyard is not to be messed with.

I figured you guys were in negotiations to buy them out. This seems like part of the plan, as chings is just trying to learn the business before you pull the trigger.

We were leaving the OOD after getting raped by OU and trim stumbles up to this big ass pickup with rev honey stickers all over it and chats up the rev honey owner for about 5 minutes about being a sponser on goEMAW.  comes away from it with some stickers, a business card and a rev honey experimental flavor.  said that the guy was very receptive.  I'm pretty sure we never followed up with them because....we really don't need sponsers.

Also because I blacked out and left everything in the back of KK's or Daris' car and it was a while before something happened that reminded us of them.

The slogan on the guy's business card was BE(E) HEALTHY
