Curling is my favorite olympic sport of all
Best summer Olympics sport: Pick one of either track and field, swimming or basketball.
Most underrated summer Olympics sport: Fencing. Cuz come on, who doesn't like two dudes fighting with sharp objects?
Worst summer Olympics sport: Definitely synchronized swimming.
So excited! :excited:
Really excited for another summer of Shawn Johnson on my tv screen
watching her and the other gymnasts just amazes me. not because of their flexibility, flips, etc.... but that they're like 4'8" and stuff, and not considered dwarfs or little people or w/e. then i look at team china and think "are they 4 or were they bound during puberty?"Really excited for another summer of Shawn Johnson on my tv screen

Yes, he could be great at doing ALL things for EMAW. When JO needs a breather, Angel can oop it to Kynard for the finishing DOB.You would think this guy would be a freak receiver, right? Maybe even a D-Back. We kinda need those.

No, tape delays suck. Why unless USA wins some event why would I even bother watching it after I already know the outcome? I mean, I was watching crap all day the least NBC could do is show the swimming finals live.

watching it on your computer is inferior to watching it on the TV, indisputable fact.
watching it on your computer is inferior to watching it on the TV, indisputable fact.
Guess it's a good thing that NBC's tape-delaying all this crap then so that people who work can watch it when they get home on their TVs instead of trying to watch it on their employer's computers. Kind of sucks for the people who are gonna be home and were hoping to watch some high hurdles instead of their usual soaps I guess.

16-Year-Old Chinese Girl Swam A Faster 50 Meters Than Ryan Lochte
Barry Petchesky
Ye Shiwen didn't just break the world record for the 400m individual medley. She smashed it, by more than a second. She beat silver medalist Elizabeth Beisel by nearly three seconds. She shaved more than seven seconds off her own mark at the World Championships last summer.
And perhaps most stunningly, the final 50 meters of Ye's swim were faster than Ryan Lochte's final 50m, when he took gold in the men's version on Saturday.
Ye's fellow swimmers sounded incredulous enough, and BBC presenters went even further. But it was U.S. coach and executive John Leonard who fired the first doping shots across the Chinese's bow.
"We want to be very careful about calling it doping," Leonard said. "The one thing I will say is that history in our sport will tell you that every time we see something, and I will put quotation marks around this, 'unbelievable', history shows us that it turns out later on there was doping involved. That last 100m was reminiscent of some old East German swimmers, for people who have been around a while. It was reminiscent of 400m individual medley by a young Irish woman in Atlanta."
That young Irish woman was Michelle Smith, who in 1996 had Ireland's second-best ever medal haul, and similarly dominated in the 400 IM, just before her career was done in by a series of failed drug tests.
Leonard added that Ye
"looks like Superwoman. Any time someone has looked like Superwoman in the history of our sport they have later been found guilty of doping."
Leonard points out that the Chinese swim program has something of a history of doping, dating back to the 1994 World Championships and running through the 2008 Junior Championships. Ye was straight-up asked about the cleanliness of her urine, and replied that "the Chinese team keep very firmly to the anti-doping policies, so there is absolutely no problem."
This is a thorny issue, and I'm not sure there's a respectful way to "I'm not saying she doped, but there's no way she should have been able to perform like that without doping" without it sounding like sour grapes. Especially if you're an American, since an American swimmer came in second. BUT: that was one really, really fast goddamn swim.

Link to the full story of whatever Tully was tweeting about last night where somebody slipped a $100 bill to some gymnastics judges? That was great. Great Britain had the silver and then Japan said "Nope, denied, here's a hundy!" and the score was over turned. Japan silver in men's gymnastics and GB fell to bronze.

Yeah, but if I were judging and saw that they only handed me $100, I would laugh in their poor faces. This is the olympics after all. They could either hand me a stack of benjamins, or GTFOOMF. I would hand them their denial with a smile.

I thought the same thing. Supposedly the fee is designed to discourage "capricious" challenges. But $100? I assume one of the gymnasts shook that out of somewhere indecent in the lockers. That's couch change.

sorry if luked but N Korea's women's soccer team is banned from the next world cup because 5 or 6 of them tested positive for steroids in the last WC. The reason given was that the players were struck by lightning during training and needed roids to recoup.

If I was Phelps, I would wear my swimsuit and sunglasses everywhere from here on. Even when my eventual party side got to me after I stopped racing and got all extra overweight and sad. I would still wear the suit and sunglasses everywhere. I would constantly remind everyone who I was too.
Also, the void Phelps is going to leave in the sport when he is done this year is one that Lockte(SP) will not be able to fill up by giving himself nicknames or buying grills. It will def be like golf w/o tiger.

We're going to fistfuck them in track
Welp, it was great to see us overtake the Chinese in totals medals and tie in Golds. Got 4 swimming golds up for grabs today, among others.
We should do really well in the team sports (bball, volleyball, soccer, etc.) and well in Track&Field. I believe the Chinese are generally garbage - unless their runners are roided up like that 15yo girl/man swimmer.
So, are we going to run away with this medal count or do the Chinamen have a lot of pingpong and karate in the second half of the games???
Anybody broken this down?
Just heard on ESPN that Roger Goodell and the NFL are trying to make American Football an Olympic sport...

The sad resonance of diver Wu Minxia’s story after she won the gold in 3-meter springboard was a confirmation of what skeptics would’ve already assumed about China’s Olympics program: that it swallows humans and forces them to behave as robots. Her father revealed to a Shanghai newspaper that he and his wife had concealed the mother’s breast cancer from the daughter for eight years. Also, they’d not told the daughter that her grandparents had died more than a year ago. “We accepted a long time ago that she doesn’t belong entirely to us,” Wu Yuming said. “I don’t even dare to think about things like enjoying family happiness.”

Limestone is in charge of tryouts, but if I had to guess we will start practicing 2 or 3 weeks before the 2016 games. That should be enough time, right? Since we're all EMAWs and thus have god-given talent superior to anyone else...

Also something worth mentioning: all 3 USA high jumpers are coached by KSU's head coach Cliff Rovelto. Not too shabby for recruiting I would guess.

Apparently it doesn't help recruiting football players who also want to be high jumpers.

Meh, get over it. They're world class athletes, and among the best in the world at their sport.
Define world class athlete. I mean, they're the best in the world at their sport, no question. But, does that make them a world class athlete? Are the volleyball guys as "athletic" as the gymnasts, the sprinters, etc?
Are team handballers world class athletes because they're in the olympics?

not saying they're not athletes. just not sure about "world class."
For instance, I think Lebron James could practice Volleyball in a gym for 1 year and, arguably, he would be a dominant volleyball player. The reverse is not true. Hence, Lebron James is world class athlete and our volleyballers are very good athletes.
I hate how the US men refuse to do anything but hit outside. I guess our middle hitters don't have arms.scheming
i think you're opening up a can of worms. are golfers world class atheletes? because i'm pretty sure lebron couldn't practice golf for a year and be a dominant golfer. what about divers? i mean they just climb up a ladder and jump into a pool. are they world class atheletes? could lebron practice their sport for a year and be one of the best?

I don't really know. case by case basis, I guess? I'd say athletic ability is combination of physical prowess and also skill. To me, a gymnast is the gold standard. then I work down from there. I'd say that Tiger is a worldclass athlete b/c he's f'n jacked is also very skilled. Is Phil bitch-tits Mickelson also world class, athletically? I want to say no, because whiel incredibly skilled, he doesn't appear to be much more physically superior than the average guy on the street. Divers are basically gymnasts + water, so I'd say they're world class.
Looking at volleyball, though, I see the skill set as being very similar to basketball. I think many NBA bballers could play volleyball professionally, not the other way around. Therefore, as I consider NBAers world class athletes, I necessarily can't view volleyballers as world class too. Clearly, one class is superior to the other class, IMO.
lebron is the best basketball player to have ever lived. trying to suggest that he could stop playing basketball during the peak of his career and dedicate himself to volley ball (a sport with very similar but more limited skill sets) and be good at it, does not in any way lessen the athletic attributes/abilities of the volleyball players.
also, you're trying to say that some golfers are world class atheletes while others aren't. phil is one of the best at his sport ever. ever. you're going to tell me that he isn't a world class athelete just because he isn't as ripped as other people in his sport. is a ripped golfer that hasn't won a major a world class athelete but phil isn't? gmafb. is prince fielder not a world class athelete, but johnny giavotella is?
also, i bet a lot of gymnasts could be divers but not the other way around, so you might want to rethink your philosophy on that. divers are not world class atheletes. sorry bub.
If it was so easy to jump from gymnastics to diving or basketball to volleyball, why doesn't anyone do it? You would think the USOC would recruit some fringe Olympic basketball players to play volleyball and kick ass if it was that easy.

i don't know about gymnastics or diving. But, with basketball and volleyball, I think a lot of fringe basketball players would make the transition if there was money to be made. I wikid Matt Anderson, one of our stars, and he left college early to play pro ball in Korea and Russia. Just not a very big sport in the US. No money in it for most guys.

Agreed. The talent pool is larger in basketball in the USA because the $$$ pool is larger. I would guess that some players from basketball could make the transition to volleyball if they wanted to, but then again, look at how changing sports worked for MJ, one of the greatest athletes ever. Granted baseball has a huge talent pool also, but I don't think it would be simple for anyone to transition between sports, especially at an olympic level.
But then I think of people like Destinee Hooker. Who could compete in either the high jump or volleyball at the olympics.
So basically we should just get Lebron to retire from the NBA and start playing volleyball so we can settle this argument.

Spoiler: USA gets silver in women's beach volleyball
BOOM! 79-76 USA! Suck it China! We are still behind in Golds. Lots of work left to do Dobs
What ever we are ahead in is what you want to be ahead in. Once we are ahead in golds, then they can suck it some more. Right now, it is more important to win more overall medals.BOOM! 79-76 USA! Suck it China! We are still behind in Golds. Lots of work left to do Dobs
I feel like we could win a million medals today you guysWell we can't, but I love your enthusiasm SD. We were with Kynard when he shocked the world and we will be together when we crush the ChiComs under our gold medals and beautiful smiles.
OMG they said the first diver used to be a gymnast. She is going to win on athleticism and then give a very robotic interview.
i don't know about gymnastics or diving.

Skill and repetition is a lot more requisite in baseball than other sports. Being athletic is a great advantage, but pure athletic prowess isn't as much of a golden ticket in baseball as it is in, say, football.
The decathlon brings into question the validity of it's claim to "the world's greatest athlete." Is it? I think it may be the best test, though I'm not at all convinced that the greatest athletes participate in the event.
For biggest badass of the olympics, I'm going with Abby Wambach.I think she would do most anything of what it would take to win.

I would bet everything that Usain Bolt would be better at the decathlon than any decathlete sprinting the 100

I think both would get last in the olympics and it wouldn't be close.

Ashton Eaton can run a 10.21. That would have been good enough to qualify for the semifinals in London.
Usain Bolt would have to put a lot of work into the decathlon to be at an elite level. Somebody like Eaton could make a transition to the 100m faster than a 100m sprinter could transition to the decathlon.
I did a little figuring and took the top 8 scores from each event in the decathlon, averaged them, and then put them up against either top 8 finishers each of the individual events' Olympic final. Some events have yet to take place so I used the finishes from the 2011 World Championships for those instead.
The Individual event scores will be posted first followed by the decathlon scores.
100m - 9.83 to 10.57
Long Jump - 26.57 to 25
Shot Put - 69.46 to 50.62
High Jump - 7.57 to 6.76
400m - 44.68 to 48.12
110m hurdles - 13.26 to 13.71
Discus - 219.52 to 166.34
Pole Vault - 19.06 to 17.29
Javelin - 269.91 to 221.16
1500m - 3:35.4 to 4.22.96
While not "world class" for their individual events these are still pretty tremendous scores in each event. Keep in mind the decathletes also complete 5 events over the course of two days while most individual performers compete in only one event per day and often only one event per meet.
It is to be considered also that an individual decathlete will vary in strengths from man to man, but I figured a top 8 average (the number of runners in a sprint final) would be the best option.
It would be interesting to see how the greatest sprinters would stack up in a decathlon. I doubt that the other specialists would far well at all, but a certain number of sprinters I think would do well with training (I don't think Bolt would be one of them as he just doesn't seem built for many of the events.
"I guess it was taken," McKayla Maroney explained of the women's gymanstics old nickname, "by some basketball team or something."http://www.sbnation.com/hamsandwich/2012/8/9/3230199/mckayla-maroney-is-not-impressed-fab-five-nickname

So, are May-Treanor and Walsh Jennings going to get it over with and just totally lez out on each other? I was watching their interview with Costas last night and expecting something physical to happen at any second. NTTAWTT

when women foul the crap of an opponent in soccer, seems like they always stop play to apologize and make sure they're okay. this entertains me. I'm like, you never see that in men's soccer.

We are destroying China. Get gold & silver in decathlon
Bring out the clown suits. dominating faces right now.
5 golds (boxing, triple jump, soccer, water polo, decathlon)
3 silvers (swim, triple jump, decathlon)
2 bronze (boxing, something else)
Gotta think we've got the total medal count wrapped up. Don't know about golds, though. Seems like there are still plenty of worthless sports out there for the Chinamen to medal in.
We've probably get a few golds in T&F remaining and then team Golds in M&W basketball, maybe women's volleyball?

Yeah, at lunch I saw some crap where 5 or 6 chicks were doing some sort of dance team thing only throwing a bunch of balls around and stuff. Have no idea what it was, but the floor had the Olympics logo around it.

Equestrian seems more ridiculous as an olympic event.
Equestrian - how come the horse doesn't get the medal instead of the human? The horse had to run around and jump over stuff with a human on its back.
One of those players on russia's women's bball team has very, VERY hair armpits.
Another former hurdler Balazs Baji showed true sportsmanship following his race. Baji competed K-State for one year in 2010 before transferring, and this year he qualified for the Olympics for his native Hungary. After his opening round race Tuesday, Baji waited at the finish line for the former world record holder and Olympic champion Liu Xiang of China. Liu fell over the first hurdle in the lane next to Baji with an apparent Achilles injury and later hopped to the finish line outside the lanes, stopping to kiss the final hurdle. When he reached the finish line, Baji was waiting to raise the former champion's hand in the air. Baji finished in a tie for 34th with his time of 13.76 seconds.

There's also the enlightened that realize that running is a really inefficient means of getting places, and therefore choose not to run. Now you might ask me if these people are just lazy. And I would ask you if you are enlightened.

Do racewalkers run to train? Or do they just walk a lot?

Still don't know the answer. JMO, but if they train by running, racewalking is :bs:

Yup, 2012 Olympics was yet another victory over Communism. Suck it hard, China and Russia. The only way Communism wins is if it fights Communism.
It was a victory over foreigners in general.
every 4 years the rest of the world needs a little sand kicked in their faces to remind them who the rough ridin' man is and to show some goddamn respect. So, sort of like a What Now Mother rough rider to the rest of the world? I like it.

Vapid, conceited, self-absorbed, and narcissistic. There was a study done that directly correlated the amount of selfies a girl posts with their level of self-esteem. The higher the amount of selfies the lower their self-esteem. It's obvious that McKayla is starving for attention after her drop from the public lime-light post olympics.
Hopefully she'll come to realize that posting cleavage and pouty lips on instagram puts her in the category of every other clueless and vapid girl with low self-esteem/daddy issues.
Does she own a bra?
Olympics are this year? I quit caring when I realized Ping Pong and Trampoline are olympic sports but baseball isn't. Will not watch*.

gatlin is a really good story. came back from everything he did to beat bolt in his final race. and he's as old as I am.Anyone else watching the US Track and Field Olympic trials? Justin Gatlin is 39 yo and still out there mixing it up! Also, Allyson Felix is going to the Olympics for the fifth time.

My whole family was locked in to this last night, it was awesome. Allyson Felix in that 400 was easily the highlight of the night. Felt sad for Gatlin, of course he looked like an old man in the final.

Our women’s volleyball team is gooooodMen won last night as well. Probably my fave Olympic sports to watch
Pretty horrible day for the USOC. The softball women lost in the gold medal game and Simone Biles just said, "nah, I'm good."

It's not like she had 5 years to get mentally ready for the Olympics. This is probably more on the coaches than anything.

It's not just that for me, and I'll start this by saying she's an amazing athlete, one of the best if not the best OAT regardless of this decision, and I can kinda of see the whole when you know or can tell you're off, letting them know something isn't right and feeling like not competing is better than competing may just indeed be the best path forward, and I'm also not going to discount her at all, I can't imagine the pressure of being basically the face of this olympics for Team USA, has to be brutal.
That all being said, it's an unbelievable gut punch to her team and teammates to do that, you're the ringer, you're the ace. This is like Lebron, or Brady, or Mahomes or whoever just deciding right in the clutch moment to not perform and not be that clutch person and walk off the field and be like "you know I feel off, I'm just going to sit this out." Her (and their) entire life has revolved around that sport, the hours, practice, determination, everything, true competitors get to that level because they want to be there, so to just up and not want it is just astounding to me. It's such a departure from what makes elite athletes (or really anyone who is elite) tick. Be it artists, musicians, or any top notch professional. And if that feeling of burnout and self doubt no doubt exists in their psyche, but to have others count on your, and pull that rug out right at the moment you are set to perform what you've worked your whole life for, if not for you, do it for your teammates. It's a bitterly disappointing move from such a big star.
I do think though there is going to be a pretty juicy back story to come to light from this, it won't be pretty, I doubt she arrived at that decision organically, I wonder what machinations are going on behind the scenes....

Yeah, and the mental health issues that did lead her to leave her team in the biggest moment, have to be deeper than something that can be fixed in a week. It will be interesting if she comes back for the individual events and just kills it.
Pretty horrible day for the USOC. The softball women lost in the gold medal game and Simone Biles just said, "nah, I'm good."The discourse around this is really strange too. Mental health is important, but pretending this is a good thing is total nonsense. ESPN called her “the ultimate teammate” after quitting on her team, because she cheered and got them chalk.
Very well said mir.Yes
Isnt 24 really old for gymnastics??

eff, Katie Ledecky didn't medal either. Today in Japan is starting just as shitty as yesterday was. Good on Carissa Moore hooking up that surfing gold though, happy for her. Concast had a congrats commercial ready, that was cool.I think she won? Or was that an alert for a different race? She won the 1500

I think a lot of people either don't know or forgot about her being assaulted by Nasser. I am also certain that people didn't know that Strug actually didn't need to do that vault, didn't know the nature of her injury, at the time we thought it was "just" a sprained ankle, and I'm definitely sure 99.95% of casual Olympics watchers, even those who are devoted sports fans don't know about the Karoli's history of physical and mental a use of their gymnasts.

So I just watched the actual competition, it's pretty obvious that if she continued she was going to hurt herself. It got to the point where it was legitimately dangerous for her to be performing, she looked awful in the two vaults she did. She literally bailed midair on both attempts and rolled out her landing on the first one, literally had to roll because her landing was so poor.

For the record, I was never saying Simone removing herself for her mental issues was bogus, or inappropriate. She should have done what she did. I think her coaches failed big time in getting her ready. Obviously the Olympic women's gymnastic coaches are giant POS, so it's not surprising, but the pressure on her to perform and win in 2020 started immediately after she did so in 2016. There needs to be more attention put on them for not getting her mentally ready, imo. And then them coming out and saying she is going to get professional help in Japan and come back in less than a week and compete was ridiculous.

Team handball is pretty great. Looks like a lot of fun to play.

What is can't miss for the remaining week? Obviously women's soccer if the ladies pull this game out. Still live in basketball. Water polo? Volleyball? What you got?

relay swimming is really fun as a tv sport. even more fun when your team is king kong on swim steroids. USA is incredibly young, we can expect ass whippings and world records for probably as long as most of us will give a crap.
We have the best chemists.
Taiwanese golfers Xander Schauffele and CT Pan taking gold and bronze :Woot:Congrats Stunz! That's awesome
i don’t think Canada even had a shot on goal before that (p sure they ended up just having one late). when crap paused later the thought never even crossed my mind of that getting calledWhen watching it live it looked more like a foul on the Canadian player.
I'm excited to see the women's 400M hurdles final.
The guy from Italy who won the 100M looked like he could play linebacker in the NFL. Without Usain Bolt, the 100M is kinda boring. His 100M win in Beijing was one of the 2-3 most amazing things I've seen in sports.
That's the weird thing about swimming. Is there any other sport where someone could win 8 medals (let alone gold) in one Olympics? It seems like the different swimming events just test the same set of skills over and over. In track and field, getting 3+ medals is pretty rare. Not saying that Phelps' swimming wasn't amazing but I enjoyed Bolt a lot more.I'm excited to see the women's 400M hurdles final.

The Beijing Olympics had several great moments, that being one. The other was the come from behind relay for Phelps to be able to 8 golds. Most intense swim I've ever seen.
A gymnast can win six (beam, bars, vault, floor, all around and team). The medleys that Phelps won require four different swimming strokes so I don't know how fair it is to say it's the same set of skills. That's the weird thing about swimming. Why three jumps, why not two or four?
Historical sources on the ancient Olympic Games occasionally mention jumps of 15 meters or more. This led sports historians to conclude that these must have been a series of jumps, thus providing the basis for the triple jump.[2] However, there is no evidence for the triple jump being included in the ancient Olympic Games, and it is possible that the recorded extraordinary distances are due to artistic license of the authors of victory poems, rather than attempts to report accurate results
I haven't caught too much of the olymics this year but i've managed to catch a good amount of short track speed skating and it seems like every time china doesn't win a race they go to the review and determine that someone else cheated and china automatically wins. It was kind of impressive trying to hear the commentators explain it in a diplomatic way like there was some chinese general standing behind their shoulder letting them know to choose their words carefully.Yeah I’ve soured on speed skating because of how DQs can change the entire thing well after the fact. I would however note for the record that almost all the US announcers are working out of Connecticut or something like that.

Summer Olympics rule. We are going to win so many medals. And it's in Paris? Get outta town!!They have giant Olympic rings mounted on the Eiffel Tower. Sporting venues set up at historic sites all over town. Marathon course will follow the Seine for a ways (doesn't end at Arc de Triomphe for some reason).
I have tickets for water polo and volleyball and tae Kwon do and the women's soccer semis in Lyon. Might go to see more, who knows?
Also hotel and Airbnb prices are pretty reasonable now if you can get a cheap flight!

There are SO many sports. What is everyone following?1. Track
Me, so far:
Track
Swimming
A little diving?
Basketball
A little rowing?
Tennis
Also because our women dominate gymnastics (usually). I like to watch just about anything we're good at.Yep, same.
For me:I know this is the summer olympics thread but man do the winter olympics have some oddball sports. There are probably 4 billion humans who have played soccer or competed in footraces of some sort but how many people on earth ever do biathlon or bobsledding even once?
1. Track
2. Swimming
3. Handball (cause it's fun)
4. Beach volleyball
5. The end of anything cool or weird (pentathlon/marathon/triathlon)
I just enjoy the weird sports I guess. Even things like archery and table tennis and badminton are fun just to see it.
I am though super anti gymnastics/diving/equestrian/synchronized swimming et al. I do not like sports with subjectivity being the deciding factor in who wins. Does it make for great drama? Yes. Is it basically the sole reason why gymnastics for example is so popular? Probably. Is Simone Biles really rough ridin' good/any male/female gymnast doing incredible physical feats? Yes, absolutely.
But, I like something where it's clear cut, no argument who is best. Who jumped the highest, ran the fastest, swam the fastest, scored the most, etc. Diagraming slight faults as some arbitrary deduction for crap just doesn't sit well with me. Sorry not sorry.

No idea for bobsledding. Perhaps the biathalon people washed out of pure XC ski-ing and adapt to the shooting component. For me:I know this is the summer olympics thread but man do the winter olympics have some oddball sports. I like the Winter Olympics less being the smaller Nordic countries kind of dominate. How does one even get into biathlon or bobsledding? Is there like a grassroots program?

There is a curling club in my city that I've often considered joining. I can watch curling all day, every day. It's probably the only Olympic sport that I'd stand a chance of competing in.

I highly recommend it. Clubs typically have like two hour "Learn to Curl" classes that go over the basics. Sometimes, they also have instructional leagues that give you additional foundation before you sign up for a regular league.

I disagree. Respectfully, of course. The 100m, 200m, 400m are some of the most exciting horse races in the games. I think people like them because we're usually very competitive. Plus, there is a variety of events.

It's probably one of the oldest sports, dating back to ancient times. So what do you prefer instead? Rhythmic Gymnastics?
Track is just a classic event. I think the races are exciting from beginning to end. In the longer ones, you can see the strategizing about how to run the race. Where to position themselves, when to push the pace. Then they literally collapse at the finish line because they've pushed themselves so hard.
It also always amuses me how the top 100 and 200 m runners are like total flamboyant divas.

Usain Bolt in the 100M at Beijing remains one of the 2 or 3 most electrifying (non-KSU) sports things I've ever watched. He obliterates the best competition in the world and smashes a WR while kicking off his victory celebration 15 meters before the race ends. Still unbelievable:

I'm sure I would have seen it on Twitter at some point this afternoon and then tuned in, but I'm happy to now have the opportunity to watch the whole thing. And Mrs. Stevesie is very appreciative as well.
Unrelated, how much do you think a global commercial would cost? I'm assuming every country has their own commercials that play only in their country. But couldn't some billionaire pay for 30 seconds of ad time and just give a PSA or something if they really wanted to?
Wish I could watch, probably catch a replay. Having the athletes go down the Seine seems really cool.Have they made a final determination on whether the Seine is safe for swimming?
I will root for Noah Lyles because USA but after watching SPRINT on Netflix I won't enjoy it. He tries to bring the swag and confidence like Usain Bolt but he has none of Bolt's charisma. He's very fast though.
KSU athletes in the Olympics:Interesting. Thanks. I had forgotten about the whole Romero saga

If the Olympics were every year do you think they would be as exciting?
Also the team USA uniforms are beautiful and they look unreal on all of these young, incredibly fit athletes.

The coverage is so crappy. Mike Tirico talks, they say what's coming up next, 5 minutes of commercials, come back to Tirico, tease whats up next, show 90 seconds of highlights, maybe show a swimming heat......

The fencers walk out on this high balcony opposite the stands and then descend one of two giant curvy staircases on either side of the balcony. It's pretty epic.the olympic committee should allow athletes to use any type of sword they want to instead of the shitiest one ever invented

Snoop is legit good. I can't quit the prime time show. But I've also been trying to mix in one quirky sport per day that they don't show in prime time.
Clams, back on the topic of improving international fencing, how do you feel about rope spears? Unfair advantage or just should they be part of the game?bro, I mained scorpion in mortal kombat!

That’s wild and awesome, unlike Mike Trico, who is trash.
I've never considered having a strong opinion about Mike Tirico. Why do you say he's trash?

One funny thing about security that I don't think I've seen is that they make sure any liquid you bring in is ok by making you take a drink of it for the security guyWhat's security been like?
Pretty normal to lax compared to big sporting events. You can bring in food and water bottles and regular bags/backpacks. They are very organized/strict when it comes to funneling people to and from trains but overall goes pretty smoothly even though some events have led to really crowded stations.

No Olympics today. We're at boring st Mont Michele. But Tuesday we have the USWNT in Lyon!!! We got the tickets before and just lucked outhow are you buying tickets for the various events that you’re attending? is there a marketplace type app that is run through the ioc or is it all stubhub type crap?
Forgot to mention that we have some family friends through water polo who we met at the game yesterday. They are Hungarian-American and live in NYC and were on their way to Hungary for the rest of the summer. And Hungary played after the US! After the game on the way to the train the kids made tiktoks with the "my pronouns are U-S-A" and this sound: https://youtu.be/d-laMjPRbVI?si=dVML3gebaSd_F3dq
Dumb French people were very annoyed with the fun they were having but it was great.
Still to come:
Women's soccer semis
Men's water polo semifinals
Women's water polo bronze and finals
Tae Kwon do finals
I also want to do prime time athletics (track and field). It's expensive but I loved the morning session I did. Might also do women's volleyball because it rules. And maybe something like wrestling if a ticket pops up. All in all Paris is a great host city (maybe the best it could get?) and I would 100% do it again
There's a resale platform for tickets at face value plus 10%. You can't get things like beach volleyball or USA basketball because of demand unless you get really lucky but there are plenty of tickets available if you aren't too picky about the specific eventNo Olympics today. It's interesting to look at the resale ticket prices. Seems like you could do some bargain shopping and not need to spend a ton of money. Or not do that and easily break the bank.A lot of those offers listed are already gone. Most tickets in beach volleyball or cheap tickets in things like athletics are gone within seconds and the site is really shitty. There's been a few times I thought I had tickets but they were gone before I could get them in my cart. And the true open market has like 10x markups. But you can find deals if you're patient and flexible

are the base prices wildly different based on popularity? like is men’s basketball significantly higher base price versus something less popular or are they all about the same with some variances due to arena size or whatever
I would think not but maybe?
Countries that aren’t the GOAT have to have the most fun when they finally win some bronze medal. Envious.Yeah I have been to two events where they got their crap kicked in plus track where they did absolutely nothing but their fans showed up and had a blast I was like "oh that's cute how they show up and cheer even though they suck crap" but I looked it up and they were like third in the medal count! Also I was at a cafe and a table lost their crap at an archery shot they were watching on their phone so obviously they are only good at sports that don't matter.

What a cool experience for the family. Is everything else a nightmare in and around Paris? Like, can you even get into a restaurant or anything else?
A dude pole-vaulter knocked the bar off with his dong a few days ago. Sorry if luke’dOoof
incredible. I think this works out to 20' 6"

I normally get a bit burnt out on all the human interest pieces they have during the Olympics but NBC did a really interesting piece about him last night. His mom is from Sweden and met his dad when they were both track athletes at LSU. Dad was a college pole vaulter and he had a setup in his backyard where he started to learn as a kid. Dad coaches him on the technical aspects of vaulting and mom is his personal trainer. He has been learning Swedish but it is hard to learn in Sweden because everyone there speaks English so easily. Seems like a very cool athlete and family.incredible. I think this works out to 20' 6"

Just read an article on this dude this morning. He gets paid extra every time he breaks the WR so he makes sure he only moves it one centimeter at a time if he's feeling it so he can break it again at a future meet. Even said he said he doesn't care how high he goes as long as he breaks it and gets paid. Stud
niceTook what I was going to say
Enjoy the match, Rusty. BTW Boston and Lyon are Sister Cities.

Good grief, I just looked at the medal count :sdeek:Don't look now but Team USA are in the process of out and out whooping ass on the track. Lyles has a chance to win the 200M, Hoppel is a contender in the 800M, American hurdlers are favorites as well.
USA has been ridiculously amazing in men's distance events, where in the hell did this come from? Medals in the 10,000, mile, and steeplechase!Good to see USA having success in distance events. I hadn't seen the men's steeple result yet, that's pretty amazing. Did you see the women's steeplechase last night? Just a brutal death race, a contest to see who was capable of absorbing the most pain.
Men's VB collapse was a sight to behold. Blew out a banged up Poland to go up 2-1 and then blow a lead in the 4th game and lose the 5th.
I'm sad I haven't seen the indoor cycling events yet. I hope there are more to come.

I did, I won't ruin what happens in the men's steeplechase, but pain is a real apt description.

I don't remember a more enjoyable Olympics.Guess who will be there in person???
Don't think there could be a better host city than Paris.
Both Team USA 4 x 100 teams made it into the finals.
The next 3 days are going to be loaded with track finals.
Cannot wait to watch Syd and Anna Cockrell in the 400M hurdles and Grant Holloway in the 110 hurdles tonight.

There is an Indian guy going CRAZY for the Indian in javelin finals and I'm worried he'll get kicked out. I hope not though!During a warm up throw he fist pumped so hard his glasses fell off his face and he keeps trying to get an american kid on front of him to root for the Indian

I think my Nika can do it.
Rusty,
Maybe you've already said but where does the intense water polo fandom come from? Does your daughter play? I got into watching it during the last games but being from KS it is still pretty foreign to me.
Steph Curry wowzersIncredible
Sprint relays (4x100, 4x200, 4x400) are peak Olympic. Individual sprints up to 400m are great as well.4x400’s were electric. Sounded like the roof was about to blow off the Stade. Awesome to see Gabby Thomas, Syd and Rai Benjamin in the relays. Team USA was so awesome in track this Olympics.

I know it is kind of OT, but will cornhole lead to the extinction of horseshoes?
