Title: Stuff you used to love doing, but not anymore
Post by: CHONGS on May 09, 2012, 09:07:05 PM
I used to really like playing chess.  It was a lot of fun and I spent a bit of time studying to get better.  But then one day I actually started to hate it, so I stopped.  The change from love to hate was gradual, almost undetectable from day to day, but it was there.  I think the patience I had for it just slipped away, and frustrations build up over time.  I remember the day I decided "no that's it, no more I am finished", I felt relieved.  Like a stone lifted from my back.   I did not play chess for at least 14 years.  I sometimes look at chess programs for the computer, or people playing each other and a comforting sense of the past creeps into my mind.  Maybe just a friendly game, maybe just a few I think.  No.  That era is done.  Strange how we let stuff like that happen.  Stuff that is so inconsequential, so meaningless in the "grand scheme of things", yet we let it become a major part of our lives, even if for a little while.  I wonder if I had given up chess a bit earlier, before I started to really hate it, if I could have went back?

Did any of you guys have something you liked/loved to do and hated it?  Did you stop before hand?  Could you go back?

I mostly hate stuff and then start to love it. Can't think of one that went the other way.

Watch the news/read the newspaper.  Outside of reading the business section that now has a real affect of my life (stock market) I found that with every story either I didn't care or got pissed off.  Now I hit CNN/Foxnews websites for a combined 5 minutes a day just so I'm not completely out of the loop, but I rarely ever read more than the 1st paragraph of any story.

Note: I don't consider sports "news".  I do read a lot of ESPN.com.  However, I used to love watching SportsCenter, but now I hate it.

I remember when I got cut from the 9th grade MHS Ihndzz basketball team I was all dejected. I went home and went into my room and had a weird "the dream is dead!" night of sulking because I realized I would never play for the Atlanta Hawks. That's not what you are asking about, though.

I got sucked into the world forum when I was a member at gpc.  I spent an embarrassing amount of time arguing in there before I came to the obvious realization of how much of a total waste of time it was.

other than that, there's a lot of stuff I don't do anymore that I really enjoyed, but I didn't stop because I realized I hated it.  I stopped for a lot of other reasons.

Mac 'n cheese. I use to love it when I was little. Then one day I had it for lunch and it just didn't taste good. I haven't had mac 'n cheese since.

But have you tried playing with them lately? I'm sure that if I found my old lego collection I could spend a solid afternoon building forts and such.

Pretty sure if you put a big lego set in front of me (or 3-D puzzle) I'd probably enjoy it just as much now as when I was a kid, and I loved the crap out of both of those.

My roommate brought home a huge Lego set one day for a project for one of his classes, we wasted all evening playing with those. It was a good time.

My 5 yr old son is getting into legos.  Frustrating as hell.  As soon as you get the bat copter/ mario motorcycle, etc built, they try to play with it like a normal toy.  So it pretty much gets demolished within the first 5 min of play, the kid gets upset, and there you are back building the stupid thing again.  Legos for little ones are evil and I am convinced that they are designed to ultimately cause discontent.

If he is into legos at 5 atleast in 2-3 years you'll be able to get him into k'nex and start having some real fun.

Fishing.  Used to fish on this golf course by my house all the time as a kid.  Like, probably 5 or 6 times a week during the summer.

Haven't fished in probably 7 or 8 years.

Get the random piece lego sets and let the kiddos build their own shits.  Don't even try to play with them cause then they will want you to build crap for them also.  Let them use their imaginiations.  My kids just try to build the tallest tower thingy then end up fighting over pieces... on second thought just burn the legos and watch movies together.

My 2 boys don't like the random piece sets. But then again, they get the themed sets, you spend hours helping them build it, and within days they tear it down and rebuild it into something else they want. Also, the ability for each of the boys to remember with precision each and every piece (especially the figures) and whose set it came from is pretty amazing. Causes some big fights when they steal from one another.

Watching Sportscenter is a good one, I used to watch repeats all night as a kid, now not so much.

Also playing NCAA College Football. I played religiously in college, dynasty, online, against computer, eff we even made up a drinking game to go along with practice mode. I bought last years version since a couple of buddies were playing it online, I'm still pretty decent(Over .500) but I get pissed that I'm not as good as I used to be and quit playing since I didnt want to invest that much time again.

NCAA football got way too complicated.  Last time I played hardcore (07?) it took at least 30 minutes per week to recruit.  Have not played it in years, so dunno now.  But eff getting 3 star recruits.

Oh man, remember in '03 or '04 the glitch, where you pick 'direct snap', send the guy in motion so when you snap it, it goes wherever he ends up?  Then there was some cheat - where you are losing, you enter some crazy combo during kickoff so it glitch turns off the timer.  Just wait until the other person gets pissed off and quits so you get the win.

Yes, the direct snap glitch was terrible, i also had the timer glitch used against me online but figured out that if you called a time out to interupt their sequence of timeouts it would block it.

In reality I'm pissed that I cant run my offense of 3 plays and be successful anymore. Shotgoun Spread 4 wide, play 1 deep attack, Play 2 Direct Snap, Play 3 Outs.....Hot Route audible as needed.

I really liked the first album, but because they have such a distinctive sound and were severely overplayed, there is a danger in sounding the same.

Archery hunting bass fishing & poker.  I still love fishing and poker I just don't make them a priority any more.  Archery hunting - I just decided it was just to much rough ridin' work and now I just meditate.  Much more gratifying.

to the lego's thought, during winter break I found my old tub of lego's....built the crap out of a house with them. jw, how old, is too old to build with lego's and random times like that?

Another one is Call of Duty, used to always anticipate these games, barely ever play them anymore.... people are too good and spend too much time playing it and i always get buttf*cked and lose horrible online. the previews in the new one completely ended it for me and it looks just absolutely stupid
