i'm going to throw a hypothetical at you-
you're flying across the pacific ocean to hawaii. suddenly the jet has problems and you're forced to crash land in the middle of the pacific. the reason i chose the pacific is because the water is relatively warm and there aren't many storms, so you're able to swim without being taken down by the waves/storms.
first of all- how long do you think you can swim for?
secondly- what stroke do you use?
lastly and most importantly (the reason for this thread)- how long do you think it would take until sharks found you? is it a forgone conclusion that they would? is there a real possibility that the sharks never find you and that if you float/paddle long enough, you'll find land/rescue?
thanks.

a) can't really swim
b) hemorrhagic
c) would drown before the sharks got me

Stupid question for anyone who's seen "Weekend at Bernies"

i don't really see how anyone could last for very long, but i'm coming at this from a different skillset
p.s. - i'd be handy if i found land. would form an alliance with someone who could get me off the water

b) hemorrhagic
what kind of swim stroke

i could make it a long time, minus the sharks. that's the wild card, i don't know how long it would take the sharks to find me.

sharks won't eat you. you might want to check out survival stroke. give it a try the next time you're at the pool.

Side stroke
Really far
No sharks but really worried about the albino orca

Pull the seat off and use as flotation device. Next

this is probably ridiculous but i'm wondering if you could maybe try to catch a shark and then ride him to land/shore. ridiculous i know but has anyone heard of anybody doing this?

why do you say that? at the very least they will take a bite before realizing you're not a seal and they may not eat you but at that point you've got a gaping mouth bite taken out of your side or leg.
thanks for the survival stroke pro-tip, will research.

false. at the very least they are like 2 year olds, one of the ways the interpret the world is by putting stuff in their mouths.
Hypothermia would still be an issue if you remain submerged in water.

How would you know what direction to swim in
-
why do you say that?
just repeating what the experts say. are there any navy seals on here?
-
if there's one thing for sure in this world it's that i'm not taking advice from someone named 'chum1' in this thread :sdeek:

I would do what this guy did:

How would you know what direction to swim in
good question but it's not really an issue because you wouldn't really be swimming in any direction. you'd be swimming to stay afloat. my guess is that the ocean tide would really be in command out there. the pacific flows towards the north edge of australia so i'm guessing that's the direction you'd go independent of your swim direction. having said that, since the sun sets in the west, and the tide is going that way, just swim towards the sunset.

I'd surf to the nearest beach. hang ten dudes!
