I recently accepted a position that I was not too pumped about. It was a part time spot, working overnights on weekends. I viewed it as a "getting my foot in the door job." I intend to work in health care as a career later. I went through the screening process, the multiple interviews, etc. As it is a medical care job, I also was vaccinated, drug tested, etc. I was supposed to go to orientation Monday to start the job.
Yesterday, I receive a phone call of a better job for me. It is a full time position hanging siding over the summer. Hanging siding has been my favorite job to date. I get excited about it and love it. I would have a great opportunity to have my summer job be something I love doing and make a lot more money in the mean time.
I was wondering what is the best method to explain the the health care job that I have decided to take another job for the reasons I stated. E-mail? Phone? In person?

sounds like it would be a high turnover rate job. just call them dont be a puss.

call them. tell that that you just got offered a job with better and more hours and feel obligated to take it. thank them for hiring you in the first place and apoligize for the bad timing of all of it. hang up phone.

if it's a company you want to work for eventually then call the hiring manager or HR contact and explain that a better opportunity presented itself and you regretfully have to turn down the job.

I want to work for Stormont once the fall semester starts back up, so I want to tell them I'm not taking their job in the best way possible so that I can leave in good standing. I dont want to take it and run a month later.
I was leaning towards going in and talking in person, because I'm a good speaker and I think sincerity is more easily conveyed. I just didn't know if it was necessarily warranted.

I can see that. I am really good at it. And as with all things that we are good at, our eyes become more finely tuned to the little details of the process. For me it was almost ALMOST like a form of art. Starting with this plywood adorned building and making it beautiful. Being able to look at it afterwards and knowing that all of the areas where a mistake could be made, none were to be found.

Agree with OK Cat.
Replace bartending with hanging siding.
You tend bar in aggieville, you really like doing it and you make pretty decent money. You could get a job over the summer at a real business in a career field that you like and would prepare you for a good paying job once you graduate but would make less money than if you stayed in the ville and tended bar.
Basically I'm saying that if you choose to stay in aggieville tending the bar over the summer your going to be a 27 year old bartender making $150 every friday and saturday night who is 12 hours short of graduating and has no real world skills besides the ability to make a mean whiskey seven.

i think this is probably bad advice. sundance- what area of healthcare do you want to be involved in, how old are you now, are you in school working toward this healthcare career?

It's terrible advice. Hanging siding over the summer means a tan and lots of coin as opposed to wiping asses part time for worse pay. I can get the patient care experience part time during the school year. I don't need to waste my summer part timing it and struggling make rent.
I am 26 years old (so the 27 year old bartender in the ville comment made me laugh :) ) studying Biochemistry at Washburn, and two years away from med school. In the fall I plan on either taking a PCT job like I just turned down or being a lab tech.

sounds like you're going to go through life unsure of what you really want to do, skipping from job to job in hopes that you'll strike it rich or meet a lovely young widow who is rolling in the dough.
wake up and smell the roses, son. time to get your ass a real job and settle down.

I was a lab tech for a while when I was about 26 or so. I was fulltime and got paid fairly well for it. Anyhoos, really cool job for a while. I got to assist in a bunch of autopsies and cool crap like that. After a year or so, I realized I didn't want to be stuck in a lab for the rest of my career and switched things up a bit. I would love to go back and do it for like three months though...

I do love hanging siding, but I don't always love everyone else that loves to hang siding. My boss at the time that I was doing it was 27 and making 75k a year. He didn't even own the company. I was 22 making 42k a year. I like to mentally challenged as well though, that's why I went back to school.
Moral of the story, learn to love manual labor and have a brain. You can make a fine living doing it. :thumbsup:

i was a lab courier years ago, and have done lots of the remodeling and new construction around there more recently. my mom is also a director there. it's a good company to work for.
