Title: Things we won't see now that oscar is here
Post by: HarkCat on April 04, 2012, 05:29:27 PM
Our single inbounds play for the past 5 years.
Offense designed to never get uncontested shots.
Player suspensions in the middle of the year for undisclosed reasons.
Bigs missing numerous layups from under the basket.
Constant drama surrounding the players and coaches both on and off the court.
F-Bombs.
Hitting players.
Shitty substitution patterns.
Wasted timeouts to scream at players.
Players threatening to transfer.
"I'm not saying I wouldn't listen, I only get paid 1.1 million"
Players being thrown under the bus in press conferences.
Will hearing from his head coach, "I hope you burn up in your house when it catches fire. You are terrible and should be asking for a release to go to D2!"

Our single inbounds play for the past 5 years.  You guys wont have an inbounds play.  Just be happy if the ball is thrown in on your side of the court.
Offense designed to never get uncontested shots.  Bubbles loves the last second contested 3.
Player suspensions in the middle of the year for undisclosed reasons.  Got  a point here.
Bigs missing numerous layups from under the basket.  They wont get the ball.
Constant drama surrounding the players and coaches both on and off the court.  Good here, just you guys are going to hate the tucks even more.
F-Bombs.  He cant talk by the end of the game.  Church going ice cream eating dog walkers dont cuss.
Hitting players.  Good here, except when he pulls them back into the huddle.
Shitty substitution patterns.  LOL.  No subs.  All the good freshmen are glued to the bench.  Good ready for upperclassmen to play just because they have more "experience."
Wasted timeouts to scream at players.  Bubbles only calls timeouts to stop a run - - wait for it -- that KSU will make.  Nobody understands this.
Players threatening to transfer.  Only talented freshmen because they are not playing. This is piling on, you guys are probably ok here.
"I'm not saying I wouldn't listen, I only get paid 1.1 million"  - Good here, Bubbles is too "humble"
Players being thrown under the bus in press conferences. Que music.... "It's only just begun..."
Will hearing from his head coach, "I hope you burn up in your house when it catches fire. You are terrible and should be asking for a release to go to D2!"  OK, you guys are safe there.

2. It was reported from two different sources on a message board that has a "thread name of the day" on here. Supposedly some HS coaches from the KC area who are friends of his family say it happened. Take it for what it's worth.

Are you a Will hater? I'll give him another chance due to his staff infection and hip problems he had to fight through this season.

Are you kidding? This is almost exclusively what you're getting. I honestly cannot remember the last time Illinois successfully executed an inbounds play that resulted in an easy basket. Deron Williams was probably involved. Even worse, our plays out of timeouts were almost comical disasters. I actually lost count of how many times we were in an end-of-game position to tie/win and the end result was a shot not even being taken.

Someone posted the offensive efficiency freefall that was 2005-2012. I guess uncontested shots > heaves as the shot clock expires, but maybe they're the same.

But the worst was players being thrown under the bus. Not just at press conferences, either. My personal favorite was the time oscar went on ESPN 1000 in Chicago to complain not just about (Chicago native) Demetri McCamey but all of his friends and family. I almost drove off the road twice - once out of shock, and then almost intentionally after I listened a few more minutes and realized that if any Big Ten coach was hearing this he'd have ammo to shut Weber out of any living room in Chicago for the better part of a decade.

I wasn't talking about an inbounds play that resulted in an uncontested shot. Our inbounds play isn't designed to get a shot off at all. Its a lob into the outstretched hand of our 5 at the elbow, then a handoff to our point guard. I'm just excited for some X and O's.

It appears I was wrong about him not throwing players under the bus. :)

Great post.  I will miss all of those things.

Additional things I will miss:

Beating KU
Going to the Elite 8
Watching our coach do color commentary on CBS after our AD guts our team right in the middle of the NCAA tournament
Finishing in the top 4 of the Big XII
GameDay in Bramlage.
A rivalry with Huggs.
KU fans actually caring about the game because they liked Frank.
Having a coach that epitomized the American Dream.
Garth Gardiner raging on the sideline.
Jacob Pullen, Michael Beasley, and Bill Walker still having a connection to our program.

Yeah. Because we hired Frank Martin for all of those reasons.

And when did we suddenly get a crappy BBall team? ALL players are coming back. Weber has coached some great teams. Do you not think we have a great team?

It what universe did oscar Weber have a much better offensive team over the last 5 years?  Just because he runs the coveted "motion offense" doesn't mean its effective or well coached.

oscar had a better offense than Frank once in the last 5 seasons.

It seems as though what we have here is a failure to communicate.

If a coach ever says to me:  "I hope you burn up in your house when it catches fire. You are terrible and should be asking for a release to go to D2!"  I'm valiantly trying to supress my laughter while at the same time feeling challenged.

Will Spradling fed it back to his dad and HarkCat and ran to John Currie.

But to be fair to Will (and all the other players), it's bullshit that he was and still is trapped at KSU and has to sit out a year if he wants to leave.

Or, he could take it as a father figure and trusted friend just exploded in his face (taking it way too far) in front of his teammates. Will isn't a marine. He is a 19 year old kid. We have no idea what he is thinking and if he wanted out, I wouldn't blame him.

21% of the 200,000 U.S. Marines on active duty are between 18 and 20 years old.  Yes, I looked it up.

I agree with your point. Will probably isn't as tough as most of those 42,000 other kids.

I want to get on board with oscar but all of the morons already on the bandwagon deter me from jumping on.  I'll wait two weeks until the stupid tucks forget basketball exists when they get engrossed with spring football.

Love the inbounds play talking point. If you don't get a lob dunk off the inbounds, tucks think there's no design to it. 2 or 3 chess moves later, we get a layup or open jumper, which no doubt the tucks think just magically happened.

It's a good thing we didn't hire Self. Did you guys see all those missed layups under the basket the Hawks had during the tournament run? Would've won another natty if they'd hit a few of those Monday night.

they always started in the same place, therefore it was always the same play.

Every inbounds play last year was thrown to Meyers Leonard (center) at the 3/4 hash mark or at the wing position. From there, he handed the ball off to Brandon Paul (2 guard) who then would chuck up a 3 pointer that never went in. I think I saw one inbounds play last year that went to Meyers on an alley oop. There was never another one that made it into the paint or even within the 3 pt line really. It sounds like you will be getting the exact same inbounds plays to me. Just wait for when Bubbles calls time out when your team is on a big run and the momentum is beginning to shift into your favor. That is always one of those great WTF oscar moments lol.
