Title: Gottlieb's Coaching Staff
Post by: WildCatzPhreak on March 30, 2012, 01:52:35 PM
Who would be on it?  He said on air that he would be bringing this guy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doug_Wojcik) in, who was an ace recruiter at UNC and Michigan State.  Also alluded to potentially keeping some of the current staff, probably Underwood.  Who else?

Matt Doherty.  He mentioned Matt yesterday.  Also in researching Wojick I realized that Wojick was at UNC during Doherty's tenure there.  The Wojick-Doherty link makes me think Doherty may be a bigger option than I originally thought.

Doug mentioned it in Cole's story.

Said it would be Doehrty, the guy who was just fired from DannyMAnningU, and his bro, iirc.

I don't think that Underwood would want to stay around as a bridesmaid.

Badass swingman from 1997 national champion Zona Cats. Final 4 MOP if IIRC.

Played pro ball, don't think he was in NBA for too long, but was paid to play for awhile.

Socal native and about the same age as Gott, they had to have been at least familiar with each other in their HS/AAU days.

I think he runs some sort of a training/player program now, also currently an ESPN commentator, just like Gott but obviously not as well known as Gott.

Google machine will probably be able to tell you a lot more.

Believe he does some college games for ESPN.  He and Doug go way back, always talk on his ESPN show how they've been to every Final 4 together for a long time.  Would be elite

I'm pretty sure Simon was on Lute Olsen's staff at Arizona until around the time he retired.

Gottlieb:  Hey Undy, you wanna stay on as lead assistant?
Undy: I SHOULD'VE HAD THIS JOB!  I'VE BEEN COACHING FOR YEARS!!!!
Gottlieb: It's a yes or no question Brad.
Undy: (long pause) fine.

As if our program wasn't overwhelmingly attractive already, imagine Doug G and Miles Simon on the recruiting trail.  Almost inconceivable.

:frown: that makes me kind of sad. But I know it's for the best. I wouldn't want undy subjected to us anyway.

I think Gottlieb's got plenty of options for staff, I'm not really worried about it.

He also went out of his way to praise Underwood and mentioned that he'd look inside the program. I'm sure he'd go hard to keep him also to keep stability in the program.

I hated that call, but it was much better than "UCONN is the top dog."
