Title: Wheres "the line"?
Post by: BEFR on March 20, 2012, 10:34:14 AM
Southern miss pulled their scholarships... I'm as big a cat fan as the next guy, but this is silliness... And definitely A shot fired across fandoms bow and another example of political correctness as the ruination of all things... Enjoy sitting on your hands fellas.  :horrorsurprise:   http://www.cnn.com/2012/03/20/sport/ncaa-racism/index.html?hpt=hp_t3

eff 'em.  Southern Miss lets them go to school on their dime and they embarass the school nationally during what should be a source of pride for the university.  Don't chant racist comments at a basketball game, its not a lot to ask

Can you imagine the savings of eliminating the pep band and having a DJamer?  Maybe goEMAW and John Currie can build some bridges together before we burn them.

Usually those band scholarships for playing in athletic bands is less than $1000 per year.  At KSU it used to be the only guaranteed athletic band scholarship was $300 per member for the season for the volleyball band.  Not sure what it is now.  These kids aren't losing a full ride.

Just because a school offers you a scholarship doesn't mean you can do whatever you want and keep it. If you embarrass the school on national television, of course they are going to take your scholarship away.

I agree. It's funny to see people who are worried about political correctness running amok acting like these racist kids are entitled to something.

I lol'd pretty hard at caravanb trying to claim that the chant was't racist because anyone coming from another country needs a green card and the pep band was just pointing that out that he, like any other player on the court, might need a green card.

how is the what these USM band members did different than chanting USA when a member of the opposing team from abroad is shooting FTs?

It's not much different and I really wouldn't care if a school pulled scholarships of band members who were chanting USA, either. People actually representing a university should be held to a higher standard than others in the crowd if they want to continue to represent that university in the future.

what about yelling Chiefs at the end of the national anthem?  more or less offensive than the USA/green card stuff?

hmm, I'd say less than green card, more than USA.

Canadians are pretty big dickheads when it comes to hating Americans.  I guess I can understand why they would in some cases, though.

The story is now on the front page of foxnews.com.   I've been  and  reading those for the last 10 minutes.

The best part is they filed under U.S. News>Immigration.

To answer the OP, I'm not exactly sure where the line is. What I do know is that chanting "where's your green card" is on the wrong side of it.
