Title: Food donation question.
Post by: I_have_purplewood on March 12, 2012, 12:48:13 PM
So this month my work is having a food drive which is perfect because I've been needing to go through my pantry and dump a bunch of expired food and crap I don't like.  I guess my question is how expired does something have to be before some homeless person won't eat it?  :dunno: (ftp://:dunno:)  I mean most stuff is still edible after expiration and the date is really more like a 'best if used by' kind of date.  Again, we're talking about people who are probably eating cat food and crap.  It's not like I'm trying to give away some expired milk or anything either.  btw, do you think they'd take eggs that are expired?  I have about 5 left in a dozen that's probably been sitting in my fridge since December.  Your input is appreciated.

Have to say it feels kind of nice to help the needy. :gocho: (ftp://:gocho:) Not quite as nice as cleaning up my pantry from the crap I bought that I thought might be good for me and then just never ate   (ftp://:lol:) but still nice.

Nobody wants your trash.  Well, somebody probably does, but not a homeless person.

having spent many hours sorting food at Harvester's food pantry, i can tell you that they sort through the food before it hits their shelves and throw away food that is expired.  there is a difference b/w "use by" and "best by" dates.

I hate sell by and best by on labels.  that's the same thing as rotten imo.  why is it not good to sell it but I can still eat it?

You should probably also know that your food is likely going to someone who is not homeless but has come on hard times and needs to use food pantries as a way to cut down on food costs. Don't give them stuff you wouldn't touch.

they'll throw it away.  you can throw it away more efficiently.  find someone with omnivorous animals and offer them the food.

My grandpa used to donate a 500lb steer to the Lords Dinner every year.  I did not know that until he was near the end of his life.

What did you think was going to happen to the steer?
