Title: statnerds post
Post by: kso_FAN on March 06, 2012, 12:52:52 PM
This is cool, (http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2012/03/06/mapping_the_nba_how_geography_can_teach_players_where_to_shoot.html) basically a ridiculously informative shot chart.

(https://goemaw.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slate.com%2Fcontent%2Fdam%2Fslate%2Fblogs%2Fbrowbeat%2F2012%2F03%2F05%2Fnbashots.jpg.CROP.rectangle3-large.jpg&hash=927a4667f6bd23ade83e2c83affe5f8e4f0c30eb)

Would love to see some of these made for college basketball and the Cats.

It looks like a face. With the dunk spot being the nose and 3s the hair, college 3s the ears. etc.

this is fascinating. i really really like this. would be interested to see what jordan's spatial numbers were pre-1st retirement and the 2nd 3 peat.

That's really, really cool.  Love how there are more shots from the right side corner than left. More right handed shooters explains it, but it is interesting to see. Interesting that more PPS on the left wing than the right.  Right handed shooters shoot better going to their right, maybe?

I bet the college map would be a lot more favorable around the elbows.

I was thinking exactly this.

unbelievably awesome. The stripe in the center of the inverted "V" intrigues me. I could spend multiple days looking at charts for different players. Amazing work.

why? I guess because of more zone (if it looks different at all), but it would be interesting to see why the NBA is so ineffective from the elbow.

Taller Players with longer arms?

Thinking specifically of rodney and denis's midrange floaters just inside the elbow and along the FT lane. I would assume 1/2 of those would be blocked if they did that in the NBA.

funny thing about taller players with longer arms is that they're taller and have longer arms on both sides offense too.

Sorry, that was more rude than it needed to be, but it felt kind of witty so I just went with it.

The goal is only 10ft high, law of diminishing returns broooooo. You dont see very many mid range floaters in the NBA because every team has a 7ft tall shotblocker in the lane.

Its easy to get the mid range floater just over the outstretched arm of a 6'8 richardo ratliff but to get it over a dwight howard you would have to drastically alter the angle.

Just my theory btw, feel free to blow it up if you feel otherwise, thats what bbs'n is for.

I don't doubt that it's true, but it's still weird to me that people shoot better from the corners than the shoulders.

Yes, more zone and crappier man-to-man in college.  NBA bigs don't have to concede elbow jumpers like college bigs do.  Remember how easily Mike got mid range jumpers while he was here?

:nono:  you already know this. red from half-court to 3 point arc. blue-out inside the arc. especially around the hoop. layups are hard.

But if there was an attempts spacial chart for you it would be 90% behind the arc
