Then I realized I'm not melting down...I'm having a breakdown.

Same.  I was just talking to a KU coworker fan (obviously hes not a KU graduate) and asked him what it was like to always have a winning team.

The only bright spot I can find to help me get through this. Is to think we are only 10 points from being a top 5 team.  I know its not much, but gives me just the slightest of hope that in February we can get over the hump.

I don't want to rough ridin' watch them play in the NIT. I don't care if they lose in the first round of the tournament. Just please make it. I want McGruder to come out and say he isn't going to play in the NIT and then leads us to 4 straight wins.  :emawkid:

Don't. Don't do that to yourself. We're also 12 points away from being 2-7 in conference and out of the NCAA discussion entirely.

We will make the tourney in a year we didn't think we'd make the tourney. I've talked myself off the ledge guys. The only person i'm fully frustrated w/ is effing Spradling. He better be everyones effing scapegoat, cause he's an eff'er. Other than that, lets grow together you guys.  :emawkid:

Woke up. Felt horrible. Went and hugged my toilet and vomited for a while.

This really hurts. More than any other game this year.

Basketball is cute and all but it's mostly just a bridge between football and baseball seasons for me.  Also, this year's team is boring to watch.

I punched the crap out of the ground after the no call on mcgruds because I just knew what was too come. Then I realized i'm 27 and i'm an effing Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) for doing that. I then turned off the game after Royce, and popped in JT's new movie. which is pretty good btw.  :excited:

Minor meltdown in shower.  No biggie.  The meltdown was last night.

Problem with a meltdown is you have to have a clear goat to really focus your hate on.  I can't see one from last night.  We just don't have the talent we have had in past years.  Or it isn't mature enough.  Either one doesn't really give me a lightning rod to focus my meltdown energy on.

I am also predicting that someone will get Frank'd this week.  Which should be fun.

Found myself asking why Wally was such a FP last night.  Probably dumb to wish he was still here playing right?  Whatever, I hate this team, I hate how they play, and they can all go eff themselves in the asses with broken beer bottles.

Wally never showed anything that would make me think he would have been an asset last night except for extra fouls to throw on White.

I know some will disagree w/ me, but the goat has gotta be Will.  Not saying we need to Frank him, but my god.  He had three points and it wasn't because he missed a bunch of shots.  He is completely unable.  Completely.  I think Frank banked on him being what he was in the OOC.

I think will has lots of talent and would be a fantastic guard in the valley or maybe conf usa.

We need Angel to stop fouling so that we can turn Sprads into a guy that just stands on the perimeter and waits for someone to kick it to him after drawing the entire D 30' away from him.

Also, WTF is up w/ Shane?

Pretty obvs that Shane and Omari are gonners.

It's a bad sign when you can't meltdown over last night's game.  Thoughts and Prayers, ETP.

I had my meltdown earlier in the year when I still had really high (and higher than reasonable) expectations for this team after drinking my full of purple koolaid after VT/Bama/Hawaii.

BU and @OU ruined that. Then OU and now @ISU have confirmed my concerns after those games. Don't get me wrong, last night was extremely frustrating, especially when losing the lead, but I wasn't surprised with a loss there. ISU is a pretty good team.

At my most optimistic I'm hopeful to win out at home and get 1 more road win (10-8), though that's tough to really expect right now. 9-9 seems more likely, and maybe 8-10. I always come back to the mantra that you are never as good as you think you are (as most of us thought when we were 12-2 after destroying MU), nor are you ever as bad as you think (right now for most). Unless Frank loses this team (I don't think he will) we'll still probably win at least one or two games than most of us expect right now. Of course we'll probably lose at least 1 we don't expect too.

I completely agree with everything you typed.  IMO, Will is the goat.  He has sucked something awful.  If he wasn't garbage, both defensively and offensively, there might be hope for this team (this year and next). Maybe with Omari and Shane's open scholarships, for once frank can go get a juco guard that is a real impact.

Will struggling is a major issue for this team. Its clear that Frank is trying to go the Angel route as the primary ball handler/creator, but Angel has to do his part and stay on the floor. I'm hopeful that hitting one shot last night might help Will get out of his funk a bit, but we'll see. As I said last week, this team will need Angel AND Will to play well to make the tornament. One step farther, its clear our primary three guards to fill the two spots will be Angel, Will, and Tay. At least 2 of them need to play well game in and game out for us to win.

That's pretty good. I hit my -20 after BU/@OU. Right now I'm about 0 and I'm hopeful it will head back up after the next two games. Winning @UT would get me headed back toward the green. Only losing one of these next two will send me below where I was after BU/@OU.

Yeah, a lot worse. Not even in the same category of disappointment really. The major reason last night was frustrating was because of losing the big lead, but I actually think ISU is pretty good. I still struggle to think OU is very good.

Yeah, Chris Allen is a fifth year senior that was a top 40 recruit. Royce was #30 on RSCI.

And of course Babb. I would have almost enjoyed a loss less if we lost because Babb made it rain on us.

Kinda surprised Royce wasn't higher.  He looked like a man amongst boys last night.  Guy is so fluid with and w/o the ball.  He makes everything look effotless in a similar vein as Beaz(but not quite Beaz). Surely he won't be around next year...

I'm sure his biggest issue was his size. He's a really skilled player, sort of reminds me a of a more skilled and bigger version of Massey.

it gave him the confidence to chuck a 30 footer in one of the next possessions.  i think his shooting problems are a symptom of a bigger issue he is facing w/ confidence in making decisions on the in all aspects of the game.

It is impossible for me to not watch a K-State game if I'm able. I can't do it. I tried to not watch the Pinstripe Bowl, but ended up flipping to it halfway through the 1st quarter.

But I am able to transition to the not-giving-a-crap-even-though-I'm-watching phase. We'll see if I ever get there this year.

Also, if we go to the NIT, and the game is televised, that will put my above assertion to the serious test. In fact, I'd say there is a greater than 50% chance I wouldn't watch that.

Whatevs it is it is effecting his offensive decision making in a huge way.  Passing up open looks, passing up oppys to drive when a guy is out of position, taking that Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) shot when he could have easily taken a step.  Kid is melting down on himself like he has an internal Zacker sitting on his shoulder.

Kinda surprised Royce wasn't higher.  He looked like a man amongst boys last night.  Guy is so fluid with and w/o the ball.  He makes everything look effotless in a similar vein as Beaz(but not quite Beaz). Surely he won't be around next year...

810 said this morning he was #9 in his class.

810 is a Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!).

I'm hopeful that hitting one shot last night might help Will get out of his funk a bit, but we'll see.

it gave him the confidence to chuck a 30 footer in one of the next possessions.  i think his shooting problems are a symptom of a bigger issue he is facing w/ confidence in making decisions on the in all aspects of the game.

Kid is melting down on himself like he has an internal Zacker sitting on his shoulder.

his father and frank do/have done far more damange than I could ever wish.

The last time I hit not-giving-a-crap-even-though-I'm-watching phase was Prince's last game against Missouri. I watched and laughed. I think I only watched a little of the Iowa State game the next week. I had tickets and was in Wichita for the week, but just couldn't care.

I'm with you on the NIT thing. I watched the Depaul eff-up and actually listened to the SDSU game on the radio. But it just felt different. I cannot imagine giving a eff about the NIT. Also, I'm pretty sure I'll check out for the rest of the season if KU blows us out at home (which I expect them to at this point).

it is probably just the coping mechanism from watching 20+ years of bad KSU basketball but I find it a million times easier and so much more fun to watch crappy KSU basketball than crappy KSU football.

Maybe it is the increased frequency of the games that makes each individual loss easier to take.

Man, I hope so. I swear it was more fun being a bball fan the last the 4 years than I ever remember as a football fan. Maybe b/c I started as a bball fan pre-bill?

The first time I ever remember even hearing about football recruiting was when a friend lent my dad a powercat illustrated (or whatever it was called back then) that mentioned expectations for Frank Murphy (something like "not only carry the team, but drive them all to practice"). I did not get the reference at the time. I'm pretty sure the next time I cared was when we signed Freeman. Before that, I just used the Spring Game.

I think this is a big K-State basketball fan distinction. Those of us that remember watching Lon's teams and Mitch's Elite 8 (but not necessarily Hartman's teams), then going through Altburyridge, are a special group. No matter how good football was, basketball at K-State was always something special to me, even at the lowest points of Altburyridge.

Saturdays as a kid were all about grainy Phillips66 games, followed by games on the lowered hoop outside where you pretended you were Henson and (*cough*) LaKeith Humphrey making it rain on Mookie Blaylock and Stacy King. Man did I hate Billy Tubbs.

I must be an exception then, as I have no recollection of the pre-Altman days, yet making the Dance in '96 was right up there among the high points of my K-State fandom in the 90s. I always yearned for good basketball even while football was kicking ass. Like I knew basketball was the sport K-State should be good at.

I've never reached not-giving-a-crap mode as a fan. I doubt I ever will. Its just not in me.

Only time this happened to me was the end of the 2008 football season.  Still watched the games but was completely disengaged for November.  Outside of that I've pretty much lived and died with the Cats.

FWIW, Asbury's final year was the closest for basketball.

I agree that you can't just forget about the time span from the 14 minute mark to the under 4 TO and losing the lead. And I'm never a "blame the officials" person.

But man, watching McGrud's get bumped and no call, then ISU goes to the other end and has less contact on a similar play and goes to the line...

As Wyatt said on the radio call: "I'm sorry, but that's a joke. That's just a joke."

I agree on two bad situ's, but there were plenty of times where we were very physical on D down low and no calls were made.  I think they were a little more touchy for them then for us, but gotta expect this in the Frank era since the book on us is that we rough folks up.  Sucks but our team has to expect it and game plan to overcome it.  Makes it that much tougher when we play like we have been.

Again, I agree completely with all of that.

But to me discussions of how the game was called throughout and how the game is called in the last couple minutes are different. On a last second shot, that contact probably isn't called. But when All league caliber players attack like that not on the last possession more often than not they get the call, home or away.

But yes, we lost the game by fumbling it away and playing poor defense the last 14 minutes of the game more than a single missed foul call, but it doesn't make a missed foul call in that situation (especially given ISU got the call in a similar situation on their next possession) any less disappointing.

I'm just now melting down over the loss on Saturday.  Iowa State is 10th in the country in 3-point attempts, yet look at their free throw disparity compared to their opponents:

ISU: 530-325 (+205)

For comparison, here are the rest of the teams in the league:

MU: 488-321 (+167)
KSU: 554-483 (+71)
BU: 453-382 (+71)
KU: 466-403 (+63)
OU: 392-362 (+30)
OSU: 470-486 (-16)
aTm: 324-412 (-88)
TT: 441-548 (-107)

How the hell does a team that is 10th in the nation in 3-point attempts get to the free throw line 530 times?  I'm not even talking about the fact that Iowa State players might not foul as much (especially when the officials don't call blatant fouls on them).  I'm talking free throw attempts.  The numbers are mind boggling.  Hoiberg's wife must be sucking off the officials before every home game.

He is really good at drawing fouls, one of the best in the country, and he's attempted more FTs in conference play than anyone. Allen, Ejim, and Kristopherson, and Palo are also decent. When you have one guy that is that good at it, others generally follow.

A lot of it is Hoiberg's teams just don't foul much. They didn't last year either. Its how they play defense.

they don't really play much defense.  that's another thing that's frustrating about last night.

Yeah. Our true frosh out-of-control PG gets one uncontested layup after another, and McGruder can't solve the mystery of the ISU Olé D for whatever reason.

I had an idea, though lacked the necessary stopwatch last night, of keeping track of how much time of possession is wasted by Will doing this. Perhaps next game.

to be fair, he is very good at recognizing the triggers of his panic attacks and ultimately avoiding fainting by removing himself from said triggers.

Royce White laughs at Will.

Only MU did better than us against them.

Yeah, a very dramatic switch from last year when they were last in the Big 12 at 1.11 PPP. I was very surprised to see them at .98 PPP this year, but its the major reason they are 6-3. I have to give Hoiberg a ton of credit, he's got those guys playing well, much better than I anticipated, even with the talent.

Fair enough. My Spradling mockery still stands. Spradling has yet to meet a D he couldn't penetrate halfway before scrambling back to the comfort of the backcourt.
