Title: OL
Post by: Winters on January 27, 2012, 04:00:50 PM
Would it be safe to say that this will be improved next year? Could it be a dominating force in the Big 12 conference if not the NCAA's!?

i need to rely on the manhatter for an answer to this Q.

tbh winters, this has been a huge Q for me as well, let's hope for the best and rest knowing that LHCBS can build OLines with the best of them, if not the best.

Uhh........you do realize half the starting line graduated right?

you really worried about replacing Freeze and Hanson?  Our coaches are not.

Foketi will be back...he starts at LT every game last year if he doesn't blow a tire.  So, basically we're down to "you do realize half the starting line Freeze and Aufner graduated right?"

The only "loss" I consider is Aufner.  A three year starter and a tough player for us.  He wasn't a very good athlete.  I won't miss Freeze and Hanson.  Lucas will likely start at one of the tackle positions.  I think he has a lot of upside...bigger and better athlete than Hanson.  Either Rooks or Foketi start at the other tackle position...if Rooks is ready possibly Foketi slips inside to LG.  We should have some better athletes on the field next year but no idea how well they will work together or how tough some of them will play.

In a perfect world I think Clement would redshirt.   He athletic for his size but raw, he needs time in the weight room and time to work on technique.  Plus it would help split up the classes some Lucas and Rooks will both be jr tackles next year and we really don't have much in the way of younger tackles.

Actually in a perfect world he would be the best OLineman in history. Your scenario would be like just an OK world.

as long a Charley Dickey is the OL coach, I am confident this unit will be a strength of the team, no matter how many starters return.

With Fokeli back we have to better.

Our OTs were constantly a problem last year. Snyder's offensive scheme helped a lot because of how often we released them to block (or at least get in the way) of a linebacker or safety so we could read defensive ends helped mask their issues in run blocking, unfortunately we couldn't hide them in the drop back passing game.

The way we were working in both Taylor and Mariner at times for both guard positions, particularly RG, it looked as though our staff wanted one of those kids to beat out Freeze.  I guess they just didn't have enough experience or made mental errors.  I think the OL looks promising for next year.  I can't see us getting the same or as good as play in the running game from the RT spot since Aufner was so experienced.   But he, like Freeze and Hanson, is a poor athlete.  It would be a VERY good sign for things to come if Lucas wins that LT spot and Puetz is challenged as a starter for one of the guard spots.  It would indicate we're getting where we need to be and there is plenty of depth.  I would imagine that Foketi, Lucas, and Rooks would occupy the tackle spots.  If Lucas and Rooks are solid enough that gives us a lot of flexibility by using Foketi as the 1st choice for one of the guard spots and the 3rd OT for depth purposes.  If Whitehair has the toughness and is picking things up he'll play...too big and too good of an athlete for his size to keep him off the field.  That kid is going to be a 6-4 315-325lb OG/RT.  Also curious to see where Travis Britz might fit in as a redshirt freshman.   It could be that we groom him to back up Finney for a few years and take over the center spot.  For those that don't know Crabby told the KC Catbackers last week that Britz "projects as an OL".  I have to think that was communicated to him by our staff since he paraphrased some things the coaches said about a few of the prospects.

fwiw, the only concern I have about the offense is the RB position.  That is it...not worried in the least.  All of my worries are concerning nose tackle and safety.  I think we have a shot to be pretty good at corner, DE, 3 DT, and starting LB.  At this point I'm praying that 1) Pennel switches on signing day (not expecting this), 2) Xavier Gates proves to be a "rags to riches" story, 3) we find something between now and August...perhaps somebody doesn't get accepted at a particular school (which happens more frequently than you might think).  There might be a 5th year transfer out there who can play right away...might be a juco who qualifies late such as the Toby Johnson kid at Hutch though I don't know that I would characterize him as a nose tackle..

I wonder why we didn't recruit a JUCO running back.

hard to gauge if we did or if there was little interest returned.  there are some good juco RBs in this class and based on who is courting them we would have heard who we were pursuing if that was the case.  we did offer and pursue Marion Grice but it's not known how serious we went after him.

Good to know.  It's too bad we suck at recruiting.  We could really use a decent running back next year.

Dimel was quoted as saying he likes Pease and felt he should have gotten more touches last year.  I think the coaches feel that he can bring something to the table next year.   That is probably why they were not real aggressive recruiting juco RB's that and D Rob is starting to step it up.

Pease sucked ass every time he ran the wildcat.  Maybe he's a lot better out of the backfield.
