my take...
I think you have got contrasting styles. Both are very good athletes in their own right and likely have some pros and cons. I view Sams as a great "street ball" type athlete who doesn't necessarily test that well (I'll get to that in a minute). Bender is a great "testing athlete" that might not bring that to the "street". I believe arm strength is likely very similar...perhaps Sams might have a little more gun to him. Bender strikes me as a kid who might have more polish in the sense he'll probably be very disciplined both on and off the field and do everything right. The spectacular is there but more in a Collin Klein type of organized fashion. Sams' spectacular might be more of the Bishop variety. Sams' seems to be more of the risk taking type who gets us inside the opponent's 40 and goes for broke...either a phenomenal TD or gut wrenching game changing turnover might occur. Bender goes for the short put...pulls the ball down and tucks it turning a 3rd & 15 from the 38 into a 4th & 3 from the 26 after a very nice run where he bulls over a safety to put us in good FG position.
Both styles are good and both may have hints of either's game (for instance, Bender really can run and could turn a QB scramble into a 60 yard gain).
In essence, with Bender you get more of a taller, faster, and slimmer Jonathan Beasley...perhaps somewhere between Beasley and Klein. In Sams you get more of a Michael Bishop, Ell Roberson type though not quite equipped with a gun as strong as Bishop.
tale of the tape (combine style)
height
Bender - 6'3 (w/o shoes)
Sams - 6'1 (w/o shoes...I've seen 3 different combines and he's no taller than 6'1)
weight
Sams - 204
Bender - 196
both will be bigger while at KSU but it might surprise people to know that while Bender has a strong build...Sams has a more compact and powerful build than you think. Sams has great legs on him...dare I say RGIII ish type legs.
40
Bender - 4.47
Sams - 4.58
these were the fastest combine times I could find on either.
vertical
Bender - 36"
Sams - 29.5"
you're starting to see a trend here in the testing part of it. It's sort of like Josh Scobey and Daniel Thomas...but we know who the better runner was...though, keep in mind when choosing between Team Bender and Team Sams that running will only be part of the equation.
Remember, Snyder won big with both styles....Team Bender might resemble more of the Klein/Beasley which won Snyder 10-11 games in seasons and Team Sams resembling more of Roberson/Bishop won 10-11 games.
good luck in choosing your teams.

EDIT for added intelligent content: I have invested too much into anticipating Sams to change now (not intelligent sry).
also I have a good source that all he does in class is sleep and txt so we know his focus is in the right place (football).

need to sleep on it. great post.

I honestly don't know who to pick but it's pretty obvious reading between the lines from some of Snyder's comments that he's already been bitten by the Sams' bug. He really, really likes his potential.
I think both have the potential to be outstanding.
-
Kinda feel like Bender would be the safer, less risky qb. Really loved watching the risk takers (Bish and Ell) though. eff. Guess maybe Sams. Start him early, let him gain some decision making qualities and hope for an incrdible junior or senior season that propels us into NC talk and a BCS bowl.

yep, it's hard. I see Bender as being quicker, faster, and a better arm (certainly a quicker release) than Klein. Bender might end up being one of these 6'4 230lb types with speed, power, and polished passing abilities. But he'll never have the street in him that Sams possesses. Both can create the spectacular..just in different ways.
-
Sams.
Klein/Beasley vs Roberson/Bishop? How is that a difficult decision at all?
-
My how quickly you have forgotton how bad Ell was as a youngster. Beasley and Klein stepped in and were very good right away.

because it is more of a style of play and doesn't indicate if either will be as good or better than those listed. I think Bender could be better than either Beasley or Klein but it is hard for me to see Sams being better than Bishop (though he might turn out to be a more polished passer).
-
Good post 'Hatter.
-
crap I've been trying to stay away from drama but here we go again. I've been too invested into Sams to turn my back on him now. Still love you Bender, if Sams doesn't workout maybe we can see if we have a connection. Pun intended. ;)
-
here are just a few clips from Bender's senior year...just 4 plays. The kid is a horse...possibly a War Horse. Very nice feet on the escapability. His pass play TD he puts it 53 yards in the air and there isn't much air under it. I would say he can wing it 70 yards with air in an attempt to do it. Has good cutting ability...just has more of a composed pro style look to him than the flashier Sams.

looks like with all of Bender's athleticism he should be moved to WR
-
Sams.
-
Team Sams, Team Angel, etc.
-
Would have to see both in action to make final decision. Spring game in a couple years.
For now, team sams, because of aformentioned lack of work ethic in class, we know hes focused on being a straight rough ridin' badass on the field.
-
rivals has Sams clocked at 4.33
-
show me Bender's best clip of leading the team dance on the sideline in celebration of some great EMAW play

This is always used in my tie breaker of choice of athlete

#TeamSams all. day. long. No question.

man, feels great to have all this QB potential with Collin having another round in...The Chamber

How bout this spring? Bender is on campus and part of the team now. Maybe you are aware of this and wanted to wait until after Klein is done and both had some time in the program.
btw, the 4.33 is self-reported. I'll go with the information available from combines as more accurate.

grumblings that the staff felt that sams could have contributed at rb or wr this year. with his potential to impact the game at other positions and holding the belief that Bender is more polished.... #teambender
-
Who is Bender?
-
Sams has strong evidence of EMAW
Bender Bending Rodriguez may possess this as well, but he has to prove it first for me to consider.
-
Bender?? I barely knew her!
-
I am not budging from #TeamSams until I see Bender's twitter pics of his fan encounters.
-
why one or the other?
#TeamSamsBender
-
would not be opposed to moving both these athletes to WR for next considering how bad the existing corp is. but i doubt they could block well enough to get into the rotation.
-
You think our WRs are bad? How many games (other than the Cotton Bowl) did you watch? Are you Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) or just Downsy?
-
-
You think our WRs are bad?
bad choice of words. i should have said ungood or maybe even mediocre to descirbe the current capabilities of the receivers for the KSU Wildcat football team to get open then catch the ball.
add a healthy Lockett back in the mix and it's definitely much better. we'll see how well he recovers.

I think the frontline is serviceable. Depth is the real issue we have at WR.

Isn't Sams shuttle ODeeeee Stupid :dunno:?????
-
Sams gets first pick of position. If its not QB, Bender can have it. (It would totally be QB tho)
-
Fair or not, I have already shoved my heart to the middle of the table with SAMs.
-
Bender?? I barely knew her!
Dlew12 post.
#teambender = #teamracisttownie
-
did he already do that one? damn.

bender? Did somebody say bender? Can I be the DD?
-
redshirt bender. start sams when klein leaves but make sure sams sees the field a ton this year in the wildcat and at receiver and in mop up. sams starts his sophomore year. bender starts his junior year.

Rick, what are your thoughts on the health of CK next yr. Do you think he will stay healthy doing what OB has him do every game. Look at Daniel Thomas after every coach and team knew he was going to run the majority of the plays. More or less, they had his number. This same scenario may happen to CK, and he ends up ineffective. At worst, he could end up injured sometime during the season and unable to play. If OB forces Sams to play in the same style, we may be disappointed.
-
which is generally the more accurate passer? would be the tiebreaker for me.

This. We can have E3 and Beasley, just in a different order. But if I have to choose, teamsams.
-
Before Hatter's post, I didn't even think there would be a #teamBender.
hmmmmmm, almost wish I hadn't read this. Crap.
-
Sams.
Make Bender a safety.

This is my vote too.

Really the only obvious choice. Bender should be ready by his Junior year when Sams leaves for the NFL.
-
update. Crabby said the coaches "LOVE" bender and rave about him.
oh knows :runaway: we've got two freshman QBs the coaches seem to adore.
-
I bet Bender tears it up with the scout team next year. This kid has scout team player of the year written all over him.
-
And I mean that in a bad way.
-
Didn't AB tear up the scout squad last year?
