Title: The most elite college basketball program
Post by: skycat on January 02, 2012, 01:50:34 PM
This is a serious poll so please vote for the team you truly feel is the most elite of the elite. Thx.

I think there is one blue, blue, bluest of the blueblood programs being left off that list.

UCLA.
Yeah it has been a long time since their last nat'l championship but they have the most of any, so they can't be left out of a blue blood discussion. Otherwise, your list pretty much covers all the true blue blood programs.

UCONN. 3 NC's in how many years? They need to be on the list.

Yes, I considered UCLA, but left them off the list because it's been so long since they've had sustained national success.

UCLA and Indiana should be on any list.

UCLA and Indiana should be on any list.

Also considered Indiana, left them off for the same reason as UCLA. Indiana has really recaptured some of their former glory this year, and in a couple years could be worthy of inclusion. This poll places a premium on recent, sustained national-level success.

University of Florida.
Singlehandedly infused w/ blue blood by Billy Donovan's 2 consecutive natty championships. OK. Think the list is done now....

Uconn instead of Ohio St. and you've got a perfect list of recent sustained national success.

I dunno, that was like five years ago. They had a nice run last year but I'm not seeing the kind of sustained national success that defines a truly elite program.

Also, was I wrong to include Ohio State? Having second thoughts. Back-to-back Sweet Sixteens, their '07 national title appearance and this year's clearly elite team (as long as Sullinger isn't injured) are pretty convincing.  :dunno:

I don't feel strongly about. UF. I can take them or I can leave them for the sake of our discussion.

I just wanted to be certain we weren't excluding any possible members of the blue-blood society.

If the early results are any indication, it's a three-way race anyway. Might be a photo finish between Duke, UK and UNC. When you think about it, no one comes close to those programs' stratospheric level of success. Not even close, and they're deluded if they claim otherwise.

I still think there has been one team overlooked, one that may not win the poll, but still should be considered, after all they do have 2 Helms titles in addition to the tournament they won this century....

that team is Syracuse.

You could make a strong argument for UCLA, but Indiana is blueblood elite. Five national titles (legit NCAA ones) and 20 Big 10 championships. Yeah, they went through a down cycle. But they're back. Will be top-5 for the next decade.
UConn and Duke have really only experienced elite-like success under one coach.

U serious? KU is like Syracuse except Syracuse didn't lose to four mediocre mid-majors in the span of seven NCAAs. That's not success, that's failure. Their last great coach (all-time greatest, IMHO) is now UNC's coach, so I'd suggest you vote for them instead.

Anyway, the results speak for themselves. UK, UNC and Duke are far and away the most elite college basketball programs, with Duke leading the way. MSU, UConn and Ohio State are close but still not in the upper echelon. Everyone else is playing catch up.

Several of the teams mentioned ITT could soon be considered elite if they keep it up. It will come down to things like back-to-back-to-back-to-back Sweet Sixteens or better, consistently winning NCAA games they're supposed to win, consistent success in landing elite recruits, financial health of the athletic dept., etc.

Making the switch?
Here’s some advice from Terry Dahl for any other Wildcats looking to join Jayhawk Nation:

Be open and up-front about it. Dahl sent an email to family and friends, and he encourages others not to be shy coming out of the purple closet. “It feels better when you get it off your chest,” he says.
Fair-weather fandom? Forget it. “I’m totally against that type of behavior. You have to be on board: All KU, or all K-State. One way or the other. It’s weak, in my own mind, to root for KU in basketball and K-State in football.”
Shed the purple fashion — the T-shirts, the ’Cat paws and everything else. “I got rid of it. There isn’t anything purple in my house. If somebody’s truly a KU fan or a K-State fan, you shouldn’t have clothing from the other school.”

Aside from how self-evidently stupid this is, there is also the fact that KU is in decline and K-State is on the rise, in all areas. Converts are always the most zealous believers, so I guess it will be a while before the cognitive dissonance sets in.

Man, can you imagine being Louisville or NC State? Knowing your rivals are national powerhouses UK and UNC (respectively)? That would be something.

Our rival probably looks at us with similar levels of fear and awe. They can't seem to beat us, either here or in Austin.

Anyway, looks like the voters have chosen Duke as the most elite college basketball program. Congrats Duke, bluest of the bluebloods.

Why the guy would post that on his blog is baffling.  Clearly an indictment on Kansas State and the College of Business that he was able to graduate being a complete moron and all.

I think there is a relatively strong association between the two terms in bold above.
