Title: Let's Talk Electric Blankets
Post by: DQ12 on December 16, 2011, 10:13:32 AM
Anybody have them?   Like them?

Two nights ago, my electric blanket burned the insides of my knees pretty bad and now they're blistering up (GROSS).

Still used my EB last night though.  Too cold in my room not to use it.

What do you guys think of them?

Did you put a sheet between the blanket and your body?

I don't use EB's often. I usually prefer to just turn up the thermostat if it is too cold in the house.

Which is made worse by the fact that he keeps the thermostat at "freezing".

Maybe that's just an elaborate setup for giving you your own Team Jacob blanket for Christmas.

My room is about 70% windows and it gets really cold at night in the Winter.  I'm talking like 50-55 degreesish cold.

"Turn up the thermostat"

Great idea, but I thought of that already and it doesn't work in my room.

I'm using a pretty good combination of electric blanket and space heater.  Aside from the burns, it's been great.

yeah, in winter there is nothing better w/ really warm blankets in a cold room. The high thermostat ruins this experience.

Had an EB growing up. Loved it. Always did the pre-bedtime warm-up thing (had no heat in the upstairs). Then Readers Digest ran an article saying they might cause cancer, so my mom took away the controller thing. EB's that aren't plugged in really suck.

60-65 is great.  I agree.

55 is just absurd though.  Hence, the EB.

another alternative to the electric blanket is putting a hot water bottle under your covers before you get into bed. Can be really good for warming your feet, but obviously not as much surface area warmed.

well, now that we know a space heater is involved next to the electric blanket, the ball game has changed...

so like, can we set some kind of limit on how long between posts is long enough to send out a search party?  24 hrs, 48 hrs. ???

My parents claim they used to heat bricks in this big ass iron oven thing that is still sitting outside in their yard (I think they think it's decoration or something). Anyway, they'd supposedly put the hot bricks at the foot of the bed in the winter to keep their feet warm. Maybe you can try that (but it may just be a weird euphemism for sex)?  :dunno:

As a sex euphemism or a foot-warming device? The latter seems  tricky (or at least kinky). The former seems pretty obvious.

I would expect them to get very defensive and say that they don't even believe you. By the time you get off the phone with them, you will probably be ready to sue.

Shitty college house.  Live in a room that I'm sure used to be some kind of sun room or whatever.

Tons of windows.  Two huge skylights.  Awful insulation.  Was prescribed antibiotics for the infected burn.
