Title: URGENT: Help Trim figure out his new computer's tv tuner and stuff (NOW W/RAKE!)
Post by: Trim on November 26, 2011, 07:11:46 PM
I got this and added the tv tuner at the bottom: http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/SYCTOProcess?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&LBomId=8198552921666380650&categoryId=8198552921644836500

Won't be used all that much.  It's sitting in the home office/MOAP2.5 guest room.  Seemed to have good success salvaging stuff, including the original 10 long-lost oEMAW podcasts, from my crashed laptop onto this new thing.  The idea is to save stuff I want saved on there but generally use my laptop for day-to-day stuff.

But I'd like to be able to record games on this new computer and learn to do some videoy stuff.

I see the little cable input nub on the back of the computer.

Right now, I've got a regular old-school tv in that room with cable split between that and the cable box that powers my phone and internet.  In the other rooms, I've got cable going to Cox DVR boxes that get digital/HD tv going to the good TVs.

I don't really need to have that old tv in the home office room if I can get tv on the computer.  The computer screen's almost as big as the tv.

If I take the cable that's plugged into the old tv and plug it into the computer, will the computer effectively be my old tv?

If I want to have the good channels and HD on the computer, do I need to run the cable through a Cox cable box en route to the computer?

In either scenario, how do I record tv on the computer?

Haven't touched this at all other than getting what I think is everything off the crashed computer onto the new one, and building a desk for it.

should get the networks (Nbc, Abc, etc) in HD w/o a box but you will need one for ESPN and FSN.  That said, I think all cat fb and bb games will be available thru espn3 or on big12sports.com so that may work for your video making.

I don't want to rely on websites; I want all the stuff I can watch in my living room to be showing up and recorded on the computer.

Also, I want to take some games that are still saved on the DVRs in the other rooms and hook them up to this computer and get them saved on the computer before I trade them in to Cox for whatever the new models are.

Do I need to know how to unbuild the computer I bought and stick that thing inside of it somehow?

Is there a version that would just sit on my well-built desk and plug it in to the computer?

So, plan on spending your hangover Friday morning post-MOAP working on this while being fed nu-way and/or tongue quesadillas from El Paisa.

Tell me what I should get in anticipation of you mod'ing.  At least have a cable box in there to trial-and-error with?  Buy one of those things skipper posted?

It already has this, I don't know what it means:

First glance it doesn't look like that computer supports much expansion, would have to get an external HD capture box. I don't know much about those, but it seems that it might only be good for getting your existing crap off your DVR to your computer, and future use of it could be limited.

Can't you find the torrents for those games or something?

I don't mess with torrents anymore.  The first time my laptop blew up, the computer guy attributed it to those. :dunno:

I've got them all saved off there in other forms but low-quality.  If I could get them off the DVRs in close to the same quality as I see them on tv, it'd be nice.  What would be a basic external box I could get for this project that I could re-sell for half the price if I find it's useless after I'm done?

Maybe illegal pr0n torrents can own a computer but the torrents Houcat or whoever posts are safe.

I don't know much about this sort of stuff but I remember Hauppage products being pretty good. Kinda pricey though.

Yeah, doesn't seem worth it.  I'll move one of the cable boxes that has games saved on it now in there and mess with it a little myself and see if it seems possible on it's own, as well as confirming that running cable through the box en route to the computer lets me get all the channels on there for future stuff instead of just whatever would come running the cable from the wall.

If anybody wanted to watch the ku and usc games from the Walker/Beasley year, the xavier tourney game, last year's ut hoops game, or the ku guy in the foam head crying in perfect HD on the big screen, better come over soon.
Title: uploading video from tv to computer
Post by: j rake on May 24, 2012, 08:51:48 AM
i want to be able to do this but don't know how.

mac laptop. surely need some equipment. plan to drive to best buy. really, REALLY don't want to interact with any of their annoying customer service reps. what do i need to buy? software? some sort of cord that plugs into the TV and then feeds into the laptop?

estimated cost?
easy to perform this task?

Trim does this a lot.  Since you have a Mac I would look through these options:

UPDATE: Never use the tv tuner or any method of transferring from the DVR to the computer.  Also, it no longer recognizes the cd/dvd burner that's inside of itself.  A drunk Saul tried to remotely wizard it last night but eventually passed out I presume.
