Title: WTF Happened to the Orange Bowl?
Post by: Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) on November 21, 2011, 09:14:26 PM

Does anyone else remember when this bowl was relevant?  Like Tommy Frazier v. the U relevant?

I mean, my god, look at the last 5 matchups in this bowl game.  The only team that's remotely relevant is VaTech and they've been meh since Michael Vick took his services to the NFL.  Other than that, JFC what an embarrassment.  Not one of those teams would win 7 games in the Big XII or SEC this season.

January 2, 2007    Louisville    v.    Wake Forest
January 3, 2008    Kansas    v.    Virginia Tech
January 1, 2009    Virginia Tech    v.    Cincinnati
January 5, 2010    Iowa    v.    Georgia Tech
January 3, 2011    Stanford    v.    Virginia Tech

The game is played in the middle of a neighborhood, in the middle of a swamp, the nearest bar is a Circle K, it's in rough ridin' Miami where football is a less popular than Hialiah and polo and the stadium is a trash heap.

Please tell me there is no situation in which we can somehow back into this bowl.  Praying for the Cotton.

VaTech fans must be begging for a different bowl.  Wouldn't be surprised at all if they forfeited the ACC championship game just so they could go to a decent bowl, like the Gaylord Hotels Bowl or the Chic-fil-a Peach.

I just remember back when Miami, Florida, and Florida State were all in separate conferences that were easily won and some midwestern school would win their harder conference and their reward? playing a florida school in the orange bowl!!!!!

Lowest TV ratings   check
Lowest attendance   check
Lowest wow factor    check
Worst fan environment     triple-check

There are very few things the Orange Bowl is "bigger" than, unfortunately for you as you exist in this thread, ku is one of them.

hmmm hadn't thought about that, perhaps a new thread.

Checked on the Sugar and found this

LSU    41    Notre Dame    14
Georgia    41    Hawai?i    10
Utah    31    Alabama    17
Florida    51    Cincinnati    24
Ohio State    31    Arkansas    26

Other than Hawaii and Cinci, all relevant and good teams.  Super Dome much newer and nicer than Joe Robby.

Objectively speaking, Sugar is probably the second or third worst, but still much better than Orange.

Was winning the Orange Bowl really that great? Nobody even remembers it. Especially that since then you've:

HISTORY AWAITS: 7 game losing streak, 1-7 in Big 12.
Fired the only coach that did anything good
Hired Turner Gill. Not Jim Harbaugh.
Payed Lew millions, after he stole millions from your own fanbase
Hired Turner Gill.
Win 2 games per season
Give up record number of points and yards
Hired Turner Gill.

1.  Nobody remembers it?  Then why is it mentioned damn near every day on this piece of sh*t board?

2.  Mangino isn't the only coach who did anything "good" for KU football.  Hell, Glen Mason was probably a better coach than Mangino, and had much less to work with during his time at KU.

3.  Wow... KU hired Turner Gill instead of Jim Harbaugh.  K-State hired Ron Prince instead of the other crap coaching candidates who applied for the job.  Then you hired Old Balls instead of Gary Patterson.  Congrats.

4.  KU won five games in '09, three games in '10, and currently has two wins this year.  That averages out to around three wins per year.  Not two.  Take a math class sometime.

5.  Giving up a record number of points and yards just helps justify firing Turner Gill after only two years.  I'm actually kind of glad we sucked hard instead of pussy footing around and keeping Gill for an extra year or two.

6.  You said that already.

Anything else?

True, but the only reason so many teams are bowl eligible is because KU is so, so shitty this year. I don't think it is mathematically possible for 8 or 9 teams to be bowl eligible without KU going 0-9.

So, KU's shittiness does weaken the Big 12 - but the Big 12 is still the second strongest conference this year, by a wide margin.

Credit where credit is due.  Their magical run in 07 did include wins over the top 3 teams in the south (OU, UT and Tech).  At least I think.  Someone told me that their opponents combined record that year was 76-88.  That can't be right.  Ours thus far this year is 74-54.  Something seems weird here.

Texas lost at Texas A&M (where KU won) and at home to K-State (who KU beat in Manhattan) that year and finished with three losses.  Oklahoma lost at Colorado (where KU won), finished with three losses, and got blown out by West Virginia in the Fiesta Bowl.  Texas Tech lost at Oklahoma State (where KU won) and at home to Colorado (who KU beat in Boulder) and finished with four losses.

Please keep them coming.

That's what I thought, too, but it looks like KU actually played OSU, aTm, and Baylor in 2007, which were the top 3 teams in the south that year.

The transitive property is fun

Three out of the last four teams to play in the Fiesta Bowl are UConn, Boise State, and TCU.

 :flush:

Seriously?  Damn.  Fiesta Bowl getting some great teams and coaches out there with Boise and TCU.

KU's Orange Bowl season was incredible.  KU was an awesome, fun team to watch that year.  I hated it at the time, but, looking back, it was a phenomenal season.

I bet Oregonhawk had the time of his life.

Perhaps he was one of the 12 or so Jayhawk fans to actually attend the game in Manhattan that year. Ahhhh, what a fanbase.......

its kinda nice hearing a few tuck beakers defend there pile of crap football program, its a change from hearing them pretend like they don't give a crap because" ITS BASKETBALL SEASON"!

I actually miss the fat man.

He was responsible for two turnarounds at one University. One up and one down.

Yet even wtih that nice transitive score property, you would of went 1-2 against OU, UT, and TTU.
your best win that year was Texas AM, and Oklahoma State who went 7-6 both. after that it was colorado with a record of 6-7.
while you were able to beat schools who beate OU, TAMU and TTU, its proven that upsets happen. UT and OU no doubt would have stomped you that year.
Best yeaer ever and you cant even win the division.

KU's schedule that year was comparable to a Conference USA team. Really no way to argue against that. The Big 12 was awful that year.

I'm sure beems is just trolling again (right?) but by using Beems' transitive property, K-State beat Colorado who beat Oklahoma who beat Mizzou who beat Arkansas who beat LSU, the eventual national champions.

Thus, K-State can claim a national title for the 2007-2008 football season

Yes. Remember when their fans transitioned from "we might be good enough to beat K-State" to "omg our helmet is on the gameday final backdrop" into "eff everyone bring on Bama! Bring on LSU!"

Just gave you goosebumps to watch them begin to believe.
