Title: SSDs
Post by: jtksu on November 17, 2011, 03:15:55 PM
What are the advantages over HDDs?  Worth the $$ premium?  Can you add more memory, cause I don't think 256G is gonna cut it.

They excel in random reads and writes when compared to hard drives, because the data is not on a spinning platter.  Access times are extremely low for the same reason.  If we are talking sequential reads often time a high performance hard drive can approach "affordable" ssds, but it really isn't that significant because most reads and writes performed by most programs and your operating system are non-sequential.

Downside is that SSDs have a limited number of writes before the NAND is unusable.  There is no way a home user would ever reach this number unless they have it under constant heavy usage for years in a row.

You can't "upgrade" the storage without buying a new drive.  The memory chips are soldered to the drive, and often times the ssd controller is set to over-provision space to improve the drive's longevity.

Also, unless you are using an OS that supports TRIM (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TRIM#Operating_system_and_SSD_support) then I would not bother.

My recommendo: Buy a Crucial M4 256gb. Install your OS and programs on that drive.  Put all your files and crap on a secondary drive.  Though you are probably using a laptop so that last part would be a little problematic...

I just upgraded MY RIG and got an SSD as part of a technology feeding frenzy. Not really worth it yet $$$ wise, but its a fun luxury item/status symbol. I have a 120GB and use it for the OS and any commonly used games/programs and use a regular HDD for data storage and less used stuff. It's nice to be able to go from power off to windows fully loaded and browsing the web within 8 seconds, but really not that meaningful. If you measure your penis size by how many fractions of a second your programs load compared to other peoples, then an SSD is a must.

pair it with a good router and a couple of video cards in SLI and you have the biggest penis on the block.

How much faster is your printer when you install the driver on a SSD?

Prolly just stick with the cheaper one.  Seems like a 750gb or 1tb HDD would be more useful to me than a faster SSD.  Maybe not.  The whole SSD thing is pretty appealing for some reason.  (Also, I feel like a I should go by a really big truck now.  One with really big off road tires or something.)

make sure you get a 7200 and not a 5400 or whatever.  <-- this info was given to me by a certified neck beard so I think it's pretty good info.

Platter size/number of platters is equally important.

I'd listen to hemmy on this for the same reasons sited above

Raptors are no better than a good 7200rpm drive with 1tb platters.

Seems like we've discovered a few chinks in the armor of the SSD.

I don't think that was the conclusion of this thread... :dunno:  If you can afford an SSD you would be stupid not to buy one.

Raptors are crap, only a dumbass would spend money on them.  You won't get any noticeable performance difference outside of a slight advantage in benchmarks.

You'll want hemmy's recommendo on a new printer too, obviously.
