Peggy Po's
Gipson leads the team with 19. Put together some really nice stretches of play. More aggressive getting to the hoop and not settling for a hook off the block. Dribbled with purpose. Had a few nice boards. Got to the line and kept their bigs in foul trouble the entire game. Did not look tired, played 28 minutes, which should be about the top end for him.
3-3 in the Junkyard stats: Points in the paint-LUC 18,KS 30. Points off turnovers-LUC 11,KS 13. 2nd chance points-LUC 10,KS 24. Collectively the team should have had some more rebounds, more putbacks and put this game away sooner. There were a lot of tips and loose balls that weren't secured tonight that resulted in second chance opportunities for Loyola, or missed putbacks. Most of these were on the baseline and in the paint. Just poor bounces and hands, not lack of effort.
Sprads is Sprads yo. Ho-hum. 2-3 from 3 pt. No turnovers. 5-6 FT. 15 points. Solid D, drew his obligatory charge.
37 minutes of Shane. I know Martavious was out, but that's a lot of Shane. A typical Shane line. He seems content to be Akeem Wright with ball skills and vision. That plan, so far, seems to be getting him minutes. I was really surprised by the 5:2 A/TO, but he did have some nice feeds to Gip.
Nino! A weird stat line. 8 minutes, 4 points, 4 fouls. This game was called very tightly and our freshman struggled to find where the line was. Showed a ton of hustle, hit a 3, looked very interesting. Could develop in to a nice matchup problem for teams as his perimeter skills seem pretty decent and he is more than capable of playing in the post even though he is a little undersized. Left me wanting to see more of him.
Rod and J.O. Both had some real nice stretches and some stretches where they struggled. Jordan started off the game about as poorly as he could've with 4 turnovers. Just missed a double-double Rodney disappeared for stretches and only had 3 boards. Rod's shooting has started to warm.
Me and Mr. Jones. Pretty sure I confused you with Watson, then compared you to Omari, then predicted you'd be shuffled out of here with Omari. Well, I take it back. You played well if unspectacularly for 10 minutes. Those 10 minutes could have gone to Victor (if Frank was still sucking up to Semi), they could have gone to Omari, they probably would've gone to Martavious if he were healthy, but instead they went to you. I was cool with that.

Nancy Neg's
Fast break points-LUC 2,KS 2. Sorry, but this team sucks in transition. When Jones, and Angel first came in the game together the team moved the ball really well for a short stretch, but no points. That is me trying to be Peggy Po over here in Nancy Neg land.
Angel played like crap. Chucked 3's. Did not pass the ball well. Fouled (although a couple were poor calls). Has an ability to read passing lanes in transition defense/zone/press, but is not a very good on-ball defender. Whatever, not really worried unless Martavious is going to miss substantial time.
Opening stretch of the game. Sloppy, disgusting. Not any one thing to blame. Poor hands, no ability to score the basketball, solid defense but no transition to get us kick started. No second chance points at the start of the game. That was terrifying. It looked like Doc/Wooly ball.
Adrian Diaz is probably worse than freshman J.O. Come back Jamar. Come back.
-
Angel is good. Would like to see more three chucking and layup forcing.
-
Not too many freshman are good on the ball defenders. Angel needs to get better with picks but he's not a terrible defender. And chucking up 3s is a big part of his game. Even the great Denis had games where he jacked up a ton of bricks but you gotta take the good with the bad.
-
Yeah, not really worried. Like I said. But he had a poor game. The fouls were the worst of it. His ability to drive to the bucket was the most encouraging thing I saw from him.
-
Thought Angel played pretty well for his second game. His hustle is incredible. Had some TO's, but I'm not mad about missed 3's from him.
Also thought that Jones played pretty bad, even though he hit a three. Minus said three, his shot looked awful tonight and in the exhibition. Still looks lost half the time, (and if I remember right, wears sleeves :barf:).
Would love to see Nino get some more playing time.
-
W/ Rusty. Everything Angel did poorly tonight, he's shown he can do well. So his aggression at this stage is welcome.
-
any peggpos/nancyneg that had ar-t in with the nancies is rough ridin' Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!).
-
oh, and his on ball defense was probably the most impressive thing he's shown.
-
PeggyPo:
Decided to change Jones's nickname from Jet (because that was already Jason Terry's nickname) to "The Cessna."
Cessna Jones. Clear for take-off.
Nancy Neg:
Concession stand by me ran out of popcorn before the 16:00 minute mark in the second half. What's up with that?
Shane isn't very good at shooting. Wish he'd just stop.*
*Admittedly low bbiq
-
ar-t is good and was a clear peggy pos. jones probably a nancy neg and much worse defender.
-
look, ar-t had a poor game. Not sure which game everyone else was watching, but it was a poor showing. The amount of butt hurt denial is making me go a little dax. And his on-ball defense was poor, mostly because he had no clue how to adjust to the flow of the game. You could see the fouls coming, and sure as crap he kept committing them, unnecessarily. He's going to be fine, but at least recognize he had a bad game.
-
guys, I'm starting to think kk doesn't know what he's talking about. sad....really.
-
PeggyPo:
Rob Cassidy
@robcassidy22 Rob Cassidy
So, new Frank Martin thing: Writing underperforming players' stat lines on a board at halftime. Did it to Will tonight and Gipson last game.
-
Team KK. He had a poor game..but damn he has some ridiculous upside*
*hbbiq term
-
Will's stat line was a second half line only. He needed to get his crap started 20min earlier than he did. Once started, it was god.
Gip surprised me w his endurance. Prob the best thing to be shown last night was that we won't be losing him every three min to exhaustion and a tired foul.
I love me some JO. Keep doing whay you do, bro.
AR-T is crazy agressive and I love it as much as Daris loves the new Fanning. I loved his D and agree that he needs more 3 chucking.
Nino intrigued me. Looked good and confident. There may be a strong bodied solid 3man in him.
Shane ,apart from being dashing, was amazing last night. Some of those passes....I mean, what? Also big fan of him blocking shots w his crazy long arms. Fantastic
Jones d was the worst. He looked better last night than the prior game in he didn't look quite as lost, but still v lost. Long way to go.
-
Gip is very good at using his big as a house body to make room to receive passes. He also has great hands (opposite of jo).
-
watching jones play defense is hilarious. he tries so hard, yet looks so awkward.
-
i don't like the way jeremy jones looks. there i said it. sorry but he looks like wal-mart. if he can't shoot like he did at seward, then we have no use for him.
-
I think I like Nino's absence of conscious; maybe he can be a bigger Fred Brown
-
Yeah Jones is horrible. And he looks like that crack addict, Austin Johnson, who used to play for OU.
He did one thing well, that none of our other guards could do.. He penetrated against the zone in the first half and distributed to open guards on the perimeter.
Look at the stat line. He had the 2nd most assists in the game and he only played 10 minutes.
How is it possible that our point guards, Spradling and A-Rod had a combined 4 assists in 57 minutes of play. Oh yeah, we suck at passing the ball and our offense blows.
-
I think I like Nino's absence of conscious; maybe he can be a bigger Fred Brown
Would rather not. Would rather he be a big strong guy that can ROB(rebound over bitches), drive to the basket, and hit threes.
-
sprads and art were busy passing the ball to the guy 4 feet away from them on the perimeter instead of trying to make entry passes into the post. imo.

Not sure if they are scared of Frank or what, but yes, they only make safe, nonthreatening passes.
-
Is his name really pronounced "Ain-jel"? Or are our commentators being dumbstick rednecks and not pronouncing it properly as "An-hell"? TIA and I'll listen off air.

easy, there. ar-t played pretty great according to the steves. can't upset the steves.

sys is being a moron on ar-t. I can't help him out with that.
-
No he's not. His on ball defense is well above average, especially for a freshman. As for his passing...he'll continue to get better and his two inside assists were OUTSTANDING. Lob to Southwell and that fantastic entry to Gipson from the top of the key.
-
i don't think art played bad. i can live with his missed shots. glad he's taking them, he's not intimidated. he'll find his legs.

Plus he's got Frank's long leash. Has to feel good for Angel.

I would like it better if it was "An-hell." Would feel like were part of this incredible cultural diversity and such.

Lob to Southwell was very nice. If he does nothing but throw 1 successful lob pass each game, then I'm happy with him. The fact that he is fun to watch is also a plus.
-
Oh man, how about Frank losing his mine on ar-t towards the end of the game. He didn't seem to take it very well :surprised:
-

Frank calls him "Ain-gel".
it doesn't matter if the commentators are being tards, if martin is being a tard or even if ar-t himself is being a tard. he wasn't given the name "ain-gel" as a baby in pr, and it's stupid to call him "ain-gel" now.
-
Angel is the best passing guard in the Frank Martin era, and if you don't agree then you are dumb.
He did look pissed after he got chewed out, he looks a little short-fusey.
-
short-fusey.

His 'Tuck acceptance factor just tripled.

I thought this was great. Frank has gotta want him to be mad, right? Motivation and all.
It def answered the question of what would happen if a player actually looked at Frank when he yelled at them. A: he unloads both barrels, shortly pauses, then double dips his half eaten carrot of criticism in the anger party dip.

Prob because you left out the hyphen between the "r" and the "t".

Not sure if they are scared of Frank or what, but yes, they only make safe, nonthreatening passes.
The reason they make 4 foot passes is because our offensive spacing is horendous. Which, in part, is caused by our offensive. We're often running this weird 5-high set where the entire team is above the free throw line. Rarely, if ever, are our guards positioned in the deep corners. Everybody is jammed up top, including the defense. Thus, no passing lanes.
It was a little better in the second half, but Frank was still yanking Sprads and Angel every other play because of poor passes, passing angles.
-
Angel is a better passer than Shane.

LOL no. You have made your bed on #notteamangel and you will sleep in it.

Angel has done nothing to force me off of his bus.

If anytthing, Angel has done enough to get me on his bus. I really knew very little about his game two weeks ago but I like what I've seen so far.

Oh man, how about Frank losing his mine on ar-t towards the end of the game. He didn't seem to take it very well :surprised:
To me, it seemed like Angel was more pissed about the call than Frank bitching him out... when he walked back to the chairs. Who knows though... Frank was asked about it later and he said he has been getting on Angel in practices about his handchecks, which is why he lost it, when Angel Fouled out, doing it again.

If you're not on team Angel, you're automatically on team Satan, right?

No. You're automatically on team Jeremy Jones. I'm not sure which is worse.

that's team #hatesangel. it's a very sad team to be on imo.

On the Angel point, here's the main thing I'm looking at right now; do Angel and Gipson appear to be two players you can build a competitive (Top 4) Big 12 program around when they are JR/SRs?
The returns are VERY early, but I think the answer is yes. I want 4/5 star kids as much as anything, but at the end of the day if you can bring in talent at least every 2 years that you can build around, then you can sustain a program. Even with Frank's weird/frustrating/dumb "buy in or quit" with yearly team tryouts recruiting policy, IF he can continue to bring in a couple guys every year that truly buy in he can probably still sustain and win. The frustrating thing is adding these borderline JUCOs that seemingly never buy in and is a big reason every November has these ridiculous games that shouldn't happen. But I tend to think this is what Frank does and how he builds teams. Its sort of the high school coach in him having new tryouts every season to build teams. Thing is it was probably easier for him to recruit when he was coaching high school.

Angel is good. Would like to see more three chucking and layup forcing.
:gocho:
I will still let sys be the captain of the ss #teamangel as long as I can be his first mate.

he never was. kougs is 100% a reactionary, an afterbirth of a human being.

This is not the most negative I was about a game from Angel. I think it is funny that some seem to be doing a semi-troll GPC : Spradling :: goEMAW : Angel and others are trying to follow along.

Never said I was. But I'm sure as hell driving the bus right now.
And chings, go eff yourself, etc. etc.

If I recall correctly (I do), sys, steve dave and I were the founding fathers of #teamangel.
