Who cares? I care. I love that he's "gangsta". Would love to welcome more "gangstas" to the Kansas State basketball team.
-
Is there a way to watch his announcement?
-
When's the last time we landed a recruit from the west coast? Good to see new recruiting areas developing.

Lucas — who averaged 6.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks his junior year at Findlay — said Sunday turned out to be one of the happiest days of his young life.

I live in Fresno now. Moved here about three weeks ago. I'll check out his games. Maybe take some vids and load em.

I hope so, but I'm not expecting much. 7 footers usually aren't very graceful dancers.

:frown:
We're actually really excited about Lucas. Findlay Prep is one of the best high school programs in the country, and they've got three forwards in the top 40 (Anthony Bennett at #7 overall, Brandon Ashley at #13 overall, and Winston Shepard at #40 overall) of Rivals top 150 for '12, which is why Lucas didn't put up big numbers last year. The truth is that Lucas had offers to pretty much every program on the West coast, and he should put up big numbers this year now that he's back at Westview High School in Portland, OR. Just look at his offer list compared to Upshaw:
Lucas: Kansas, Arizona, Cal, Georgetown, NC State, Tennessee, Oregon, Stanford, Washington, USC, etc.
Upshaw: K-State, Louisville, Fresno State, and Georgetown
Pretty weak offer list for a top 50 prospect, which usually means that he's a risk to qualify academically. Nice pick up for K-State, no doubt, but I wouldn't be bagging on Lucas, or anyone in KU's recruiting class for that matter.

I'm sure you know Upshaw had a lot more offers than 4. Those were just the final 4 after he narrowed it down.

Not true. Very few fans were excited about signing Merv Lindsay in last year's recruiting class. As KU fans, we recognize talent, and with Manning coaching the big guys, it doesn't take much to develop in this program.

Love this take by KU fans. "Since they're KU fans and their team has had success, they recognize talent coming out of high school!?" Really? Or do you look at rivals and check out the top 150 players like everyone else? I will bet 99.9% of your fanbase has never seen a high school game from any of your recruits!

No, its KU. A large portion of your fanbase is over 60 and played the sport when they had no three point line and dunks were frowned upon. This is the fanbase that trashes their own players in an effort to get them to stay instead of, o I dunno giving them the "one more year" chant.

Is Jason Bennett's number available? Or has it been retired?

I think what I love the most from the highlights is that he's a 7 footer who catches the ball, turns his shoulders square to the basket and attacks the rim like a doberman on a steak. None of the fancy spin-o-rama's and no look passes we saw on the Freddy highlights. That plus the fact that for a guy that looks like he could squash you like a bug, he seems pretty god damn adorable. this signing by Frankie and the gang.

Excited to have Upshaw. Made my week

Upshaw's first real game is this Thursday at Clovis@ 0730pm PST at Clovis North High. I'll try to get there and get some photos or some vids.
Following that SJMHS plays a Dec. 5 game at 6pm PST vs Garces. Never heard of the school nor do I know it's location. But I'll try to get to that one also.
Most of December is taken up with local tournament games.
DEc 7-10 at Clovis East Invitational and
Dec.16-20 Mission Prep Tourney
Dec. 27-30 Clovis Elks Classic at Clovis High School.

Goddammit! Didn't mean to send that. It appears Clovis North is a newer school, but they are kicking ass all over in sports in an attempt to reach the first division.
So this should be a hella game. Also, one of my coworkers has kids that attend SJMHS. They are close friends with Upshaw.
Stop, we have an "in".

Not many folks here. The game was moved because these two schools play a playoff football game tomorrow.
Robert wasn't warning up with the squad. But man he sure is a big man.
Clovis North has this inflatable thingy that their players run through for pregame intros. Just like the one KU uses at their footrack stadium
-
good reporting, william. i thought about going, but decided not to.
-
SINGS won the game. The game was typical of the 1st real game of the season. Lots of rushed shots and guys trying to do too much.
Robert had 7 dunks, one of which was a thundering put back that got everybody on their feet. He had a very nice low post move where he pivoted and found room and then laid it up with the left hand.
Clovis North is a good defensive team. The consistently trapped and caught SJMHS guards unaware causing turnovers our just poor offense sets.
That kept the ball or of "Big Bob's" hands for most of the second half.
R.U. Plays pretty good D, but you could tell he was in his first game of the season too. Seemed a little winded.
Had a SWEET pair of purple Under Armor high tops too. My camera is still in Kansas. I've got some pics but I know I'm going to have to buy a new camera.
Good times, boys, good times.

Also, Robert Upshaw had an even more thunderous, one dribble, and slam from the left baseline.
That he missed.
It was rough ridin' awesome. If he would have nailed that one, the basket would have collapsed. The used him a lot tonight above the key, attempting to use him as a "pick and pop" type screen to free up the guards. It wasn't very successful because the Clovis North guards moved their feet very well. After those high screens RU would roll to the lane, but they had little success getting him the ball due to the defensive pressure from Clovis North's guards. So R.U. spent significant time (too much) without seeing the ball.
Defensively he's dominant. However, I just don't think that you could take much away from this game. RU is so tall and lanky that that he blocked shot with relative ease. Seems to have a nice stroke from the line too.
Good times fellas, good times.
-
williamthewildcat....we are best friends now

Through 9 games, Upshaw is averaging 15.8 pts, 8.4 rebs, 4.1 blks, and 1.1 asts per game. Team is 4-5.

Looks like SQM is in a tourney this week and could play up to 4 games, beginning tonight.

Robert Upshaw (Fresno, Calif./San Joaquin Memorial)
2012, C, 6-11, 250 pounds
College: Kansas State
Upshaw, who is headed to the Big 12 next fall, has progressed in many areas of his game, but he is still a major project overall. He shows solid timing on the defensive end and should be a major factor protecting the rim for the Wildcats. Offensively, he is a gifted passer out of the post and he possesses an improved skill set (jump hooks, face-up jump shots, etc). However, he is still quite raw and he plays too straight-up-and-down (gets off balance) while rebounding and operating on the offensive end. In addition, he needs to do a better job of keeping the ball high (brings the ball down before finishing around the rim). Like most bigs, the process takes time and thus it will be intriguing to see his development over the course of his career.
Found this interesting, could it be an Evan's placement?
Nairn Lourawls (Bel Aire, Kan./Sunrise Christian)
2014, PG, 5-10, 155 pounds
Lourawls, who is originally from the Bahamas, is a lightning quick point guard for the Division I level. He possesses a strong frame with solid length and quick hands. He has a great burst in the open court and he knows when to pull it back to monitor the defense. He gets to the rim due to his elite speed, strength and quickness. In addition, he has the vision to locate teammates for easy buckets. He keeps his handle low and tight and is difficult to keep contained, while penetrating. He needs to polish his jump shot and extend his range on it, but he is a legitimate talent.
-
MN delivers :emawkid:
Regarding Lourawls, that would seem to be a logical connection with Evans and the Bahamas, but I'm not certain that's the case. Sunrise has another Bahamian on their roster, Class of '12 6'4" 4* wing Buddy Hield, who signed w/OU, and I don't recall KSU showing much if any interest in him during his recruitment.
It's possible that there's an Evans/Bahamas/Sunrise connection but there's not much evidence that it does exist yet.
-
sunrise has a bahamian pipeline, it has nothing to do with evans.

Fellas,
I owe you all an apology. I haven't been able to get to any other games this month. When I arrived here to take a new job, unfortunately my car didn't make it out here with me.It was supposed to be shipped out but it never got here. So, in order to see Big Rob play, I had to take a cab or ride my bicycle. Which is wha I had to do in order to get to work each day. (28 miles round trip.)
I'm pleased to announce I just got back from KC and drove my car back. Also, I now have a brand new camera. So there will be some good shots of Big Rob and his family as I now can attend every game from this point forward.

I'm pleased to announce I just got back from KC and drove my car back. Also, I now have a brand new camera. So there will be some good shots of Big Rob and his family as I now can attend every game from this point forward.
Godspeed

Hello again!
Here are the last two synopses of the games I've seen.
December 29th In the Clovis Elks Invitational 3rd place game our Big Rob scored 24 and had 13 rebounds against Edison High School.
Big Rob really dominated Edison. Big Rob's conditioning still seems a question mark to me. Although I'm not lugging 275 #'s up and down the court. But he again had about 4 thunderous dunks that shook the hell out of the place. Big Rob is a funny guy too. He jokes around with the other guys quite a bit. It was rout from the tip off.
SJMHS 64-44 over Edison.
==================================================================================================
Wednesday night after listening to the KSU game, I went to the Central gym to watch SJMHS play Central. Continuing a trend that I think I may have discussed after the first SJMHS game I saw, the Central guards really pressured the ball and it resulted in very few touches for Big Rob. He tends to get a little frustrated at times like this. He picked a few loose balls and slammed the living crap out of them and that seemed to assuage some of the frustration.
Big Rob had 10 at the half but they were mostly on putbacks. Central had two SR. players around 6'4" that fronted Big Rob to deny the entry pass and they did a great job on block outs to keep him off the boards. Big Rob was visibly frustrated leaving the court. He didn't smile for the camera for the first time.
Central's guards pressured full court the entire game and they caused 10 first half turnovers which resulted in several run outs for Central as they built a 16 point half time lead. In the 3rd quarter Big Rob had a few touches and made good on them. Late in the 3rd and early in the 4th the SJMHS guards finally started attacking the press properly and when they broke it they tossed a lob to Big Rob who absolutely flushed the living hell out of the ball. During this run, if Central would not come out to cover the perimeter after breaking the press, they launched a three and hit one or two to help cut into the deficit.
In the 4th quarter SJMHS got it going by bringing Big Rob up to half court to help break the press. This allowed the guards to exploit the open floor a little and they cut into the lead. Central adjusted after SJMHS cut the lead from 17 to 12. When Central continued to overplay SJMHS would hit Big Rob at mid court, race down the wing for the return pass. Big Rob would then roll directly to the hoop and in a span of about 2.5 minutes he dunked on everybody. I mean left handed, right handed, behind the head tomahawk monster slams. Brought the whole place to their feet. After a 10-0 run SJMHS was within two with 2:30 to play.
But alas, SJ's guards were abused again. Central ran a very solid weave at the key and eventually freed up Jaquan Williams who cut across the lane and hit a really tough running shot (Southwell-seque) going against his dominant hand. That pushed the lead to 4 and SJ turned it over on consecutive possessions to effectively end the game,
Final was 60-52 Central.
Pics will be forthcoming.

A couple of other notes. I think Rob wore out those Purple high tops he was wearing. He had some other standard def shoes at the last two games.
And I missed the game last night due to watching the Cotton Bowl.
-
did you see martin or any other kstate staffers at any of his games?
-
Sys,
Nobody from KSU yet that I recognized. The folks at Memorial and even opposing fans have come up to me and asked me if I had any affiliation with KSU because I wear a KSU cap. I had to stop wearing it.
-
thanks.
-
Excellent work WTI, though I'm still waiting on the video you promised.
-
awesome
-
willthecat, when will you, sys and pike's first fresno pak'rs event be?
-
Loved the rundown. You should do these live during the games.
-
Big Rob sounds adorable.

Synopses of the last three I've seen:
At Madera High School. The best thing(s) about this game:
1) The Madera gymnasium is one of those really fun places to watch a game. The stands sit up high around the court and you can sit right behind the bench and and be a real pain in the ass for the coach of the player of your favorite team. It's really quiet when it's quiet and it's really loud when it's loud, even though there were only 70 people there. Great gym. It's built like the old Hayden East gym in downtown Topeka.
2) During the pregame intro, as they are introducing Big Rob, the announcer guy says: "And starting at Center for the SJMHS Panthers (... there was a long, dramatic pause and I yelled out from right behind the SJMHS bench) " AND FUTURE KSU WILDCAT"!!!!!! announcer guy was a bit flustered by this as he stared at me and then said ."Um... R.. Robert Upshaw.
SJMHS's coach gave me the stink eye over that one. He eyeballed me pretty good. I laughed. Big Rob laughed and pointed at me.
Oh yea, the game:
Madera isn't very good and Big Rob didn't seem much interested. For the second time since I've gone to the games, he looked like he was out of shape. He was huffing and puffing up and down the floor. Again, Big Rob only saw the ball on rare occasions and when he did get a nice entry pass, he made the mistake of putting the ball on the floor, where all the guards cam down low for help and stole the ball.
Big Rob did have a a great play where he tapped away an inbounds pass, chased it down and gave it the mother bear of all one handed tomahawk slams. I fist pumped. (From the other end of the gym as SJMHS's coach kept getting pissed at me for taking pictures over the railing. One of them was when he looked right at me and I have him sort of the Men In Black neuralizer. The flash burst right in his eyes and I think he wanted to kill me.
F'ing hilarious, I have to admit I'm more a 'tuck aged' fan, but this little trip back in time was hella fun for me.
Oh, yea, SJMHS won 69-42. Game was terrible. The other stuff made the game bearable.
-
i love your reports... it feels like i'm there :ksu:
thank you.
p.s. - i'm most excited about what looks to be big rob's seamless transition into adorablecat status

Game two:
SJMHS vs Sunnyside High School. First time I felt uncomfortable in this city. It's kind of a wild place. Sunnyside (6_14), like Madera isn't very good. I was sitting behind the bench and the SJ coach saw me and again gave me the stink eye. I moved to the other side of the court so as not disturb the squad. I wanted to neuralize him again, but thought better of it.
Big Rob scored 21 and grabbed 10 bounds, and blocked 7 shots. Highlight was two handed over the head chocolate thunder mash that he threw down. He looked better and more interested in this game. He didn't seem to run out of gas like he did in the Madera game. I dunno, maybe it's just me. Still has the poor habit of bringing the ball down to waist level after an OReb and getting tied up or getting picked.
Big Rob came over and smiled at me and pointed at my K-State hat. (prolly pissed off the coach too).

Last night: Bullard vs SJMHS @ Bullard
Bullard is a real city powerhouse in just about every sport. They really have a long history of great sports. Bullard came into the game ranked 3rd in their class with a 20-2 record. I'm glad they played at Bullard as it's just a few blocks up the road from where I live. And holy crap, the place was packed. I got there at 5:30 because I have no life and had nothing better to do. I was lucky. There had to be close to 1k there to see this game. I had heard they were turning people away at the door. I wouldn't doubt it.
Anyway, I was about 7 rows back of the SJMHS bench and trying to hide because their coach probably wants to kill me for neuralizing him three games back. But he didn't see me. However, Big Rob did see me and he made his hands into a square and acted like he was pressing the flash on a camera. It was f'ing great.
Apparently Big Rob had an ax to grind with this team. Because for three quarters he and his crew pounded on Bullard and led by 20, entering the 4th quarter, 48-28. During this time they built the lead Big Rob was pretty much unstoppable. He scored 14 of his 18 in the first three quarters. Oh and he dominated on the boards. Had at least 15. Blocked about 400 shots too.
And then it went all K-State0. Bullard started pressing and all the good things that SJ's guards had done all game began to turn into bad things. They pressed and forced turnover after turnover and they seemed to hit every shot in the 4th quarter. They chipped away, got it to 12.
SJ calls a TO. Too late. The game has turned. SJ was still playing fairly well on O, scoring 18 in the 4th quarter. But Bullard was on rough ridin' fire. They were dropping shot after shot and chipping away. Oh and before I say anything else, this gym got rough ridin' LOUD. eff me, it was loud and crazy and fun as all hell. Bullard cut it to 6 with just about 3 minutes to play and it looked like SJ would get a "Drew Lavender" or worse, as during a late flurry under the Bullard basket, a foul is called on the shot. And then a T. So Bullard goes to the line down 6 and drains all 4 FT's to cut it to two. And the crowd was just incredible.
In the last minute, SJ ran a play and used all 35 seconds and got it to Big Rob for a nice baby hook. Bullard comes down and with 15 seconds on the clock gets a layup and two FT's to cut it to two. (it was so loud I still don't know wtf happened for Bullard to get TWO free throws. I didn't see the refs signal T or cross arms for intentional foul.
And when I say "Or worse" I mean like a "Merri" against Xavier. This kid named Snowden (SJ's 2nd best player) commits a foul 60 feet from the basket as TIME RUNS OUT. I forget the name of the kid that went to the line but he lines it up and it hits the rim and falls out. Game ovah! No Lavender-ing, No PascoFiasco-ing, no "Merri-ing".
Bullard scored 37 points in the 4th quarter. SJ was no slouch in the 4th, scoring 18. Don't think I've ever seen a team score 37 in 8 minutes. That was wild.
Anyway, I'll try to be more prompt with these and I'll def have to mind F the SJ coach. Maybe get a cow bell or something. :)
-
37 points in the 4th quarter and lose? holy crap
-
these things are just a treat. just an absolute treat.
-
I'm glad they played at Bullard as it's just a few blocks up the road from where I live.

great report william

Excellent field work WTI.

William is a pro, if Ellis committed to KSU there is no way I would make write ups like this, mainly because Heights games are boring as hell and I could never give the beautiful detail as one williamthewildcat. It will be bittersweet when the high school season is over.
-
amazing stuff william, would love to see the pics

Sorry guys, I C&P'd that from notes on my phone. While it is true I live a few blocks from Bullard High School, the game took place at SJMHS.
Sorry about that. The rematch at Bullard is 2/14. I'll be there early for that one too, Camera at the ready.
