Title: Need some info about the Manhattan area
Post by: j@yh@wks on November 10, 2011, 09:46:15 AM
I am being offered a job in Manhattan and could really use some info on the town.  I have two kids and am looking at the wamego area to live.  I've only been to Manhattan once for the interview so I really don't know much about it and would like to know some things,

1. Is this a good place for a family
2.  Is there plenty to do
3.  How is the pheasant hunting
4. Does Steve Dave frequent the area (so we can fight)
5. where is the best place to find rental homes, preferably in the country

Thank you, that is all.

I grew up off of Highway 24 in between Manhattan and Wamego (Rock Creek School District). I think out there "in the country" was a great place to grow up. I think Rock Creek was a good school as well for grades 7-12. The Saint George grade school is practically brand new. Though when I was there for half a year it was still at the previous location.

I would say that area is a great place to grow up and is in the country. You'll also find a fair amount of Jayhawk pride in Wamego, should you choose to move there.

In general, the upland bird hunting is pretty damn good north of MHK in the Tuttle Creek wetlands.

Very good to hear, would hate to piss off my shorthaired pointer by moving someplace with no birds.

I live in nebraska now so this isn't really something i care about, but it would be nice to see at least one other jayhawk fan.

your shorthair will be happy.  it's nice having duck, quail, pheasant, and dove all within a short 10-15 minute drive from your front door.

Not a dog hunt, but turkey is really good around Tuttle as well.

If there in grade school....
Its kind of considered a private school among the locals known as Woodrow Wilson

Meh, just bring 'em to Manhattan for school.  12 minutes each way.  The best private elementary in town is actually not Woodrow Wilson like Y_l-a would have you believe; the best is called Theodore Roosevelt.  But there are many private schools in the area you can choose from:

-WW
-TR
-Northview
-Bergmann
-Marlatt
-Lee
-Eugene Field (R.I.P.)
-Amanda Arnold
-Ogden
-Anthony
-Eisenhower
-Manhattan High

The Amanda Arnold school mascot is the Amanda Pandas.  If that isn't reason enough to send your kids there then I don't think we can be friends.

I think Manhattan is a great place for a family. As you'd expect, the University is the life of the town. Understandable if KSU athletic games wouldn't really be your thing, but there are a lot of events/shows at McCain and art exhibits that roll through the beach museum. Outdoor concerts in city park are regular throughout the summer, the Symphony in the Flint Hills and Country Stampede (if those are your style) take place annually. Running/Hiking on the Konza Prairie is amazing, I really miss that. Also Pillsbury Crossing is a cool place in the summer to go.

There is very good food/drink establishments relative to the size of the town imo.  And not just college type places that you would get at any college town.

Definitely live in manhattan. Assuming you want to be in a more family oriented/less collegey area, just live west of college ave. If you have daughters, make sure to move a long way from all college towns before they hit high school. Wamego would be too close.

i'll go with your idea here steve.  I'm kinda excited.  I'm from southern kansas and never really trolled much into the northern part of the state.  I don't mind living in Manhattan it's just that my wife is a small town girl so i'm trying to make a compromise here, I should probably just do the husker thing and beat her up and tell her where she will live.

eff Bergman. What was the deal with the sinks being outside of the bathrooms? Is it because Bergman'ers are disgusting and don't wash their hands unless subjected to public humiliation?

You could always live in the Riley County School District (3A), that's typically where all the people who think Manhattan is to big city (  ) send their kids, except there isn't really a town, riley is crap, leonardville is crap, but it's an easy 15-25 minute drive to any side of manhattan depending where out there you live

probably should give some thought to the idea that if you have children (you shouldn't, bad person) and they end up growing up in mhk, then they'll be townies.
