Peggy Po's
-Gipson is going to be a load. His conditioning is bad. Subbed out three times because he was completely gassed and lacksadaisical on one end, but did not get yanked for some mistake. He took himself out once. He played some decently sized bigs physically, but I could see him struggling against length. He is not confident/aggressive enough about getting a shot in the lane from the block. Is not establishing himself enough physically, too willing to fade away or throw a little hook without movement toward the basket. Hopefully he works on this. On the positive side, he has a very, very polished touch and appears to have some decent skills in the mid range.
-Angel of Doom with a great debut. Not nearly as fast as I might've thought but a very good first step, very good ball control. Able to knock down open shots and good distribution. Very exciting. Frank praised his diligent shooting over the summer.
-Will Spradling is our rock. I am astounded. One thing that must be said: these Mo-Kan kids are Big 12 ready. Will going down with the injury and going back to the locker room with two Hinkins was terrifying. His return was much appreciated, but it is still a little scary. He plays defense, he runs the offense and he has developed an ability to hit shots off screens. He had a very nice sequence when he hit one just off the top of the key and then later hit a nice shot at the elbow.
-Our tiny dancer had a nice little ball game. I am very worried about Martavious. With all the other combos and small-bigs that Frank can Frank around with, my precious is under threat. Please no. Please no. He played a lot of minutes, but this was largely because Rodney had a stinker, Will had an injury and it was a 30 point blowout. He had the highlight of the game and is overall a very enjoyable presence in nearly every category.
-JO is not the skinniest big any more. It must feel great. He is a legit Big 12 7 footer. He is extremely active on the boards. He is a defensive presence in the lane. He has learned how to use his height. He has some moves in the post and is so long that he can always find a shot. He doesn't make himself small any more. I am being very positive! He is going to get hacked alot this year and if he shoots that poorly from the line it may not be a terrible strategy, but I think he'll get better.
-"looking good Frank" gave him the wink and gunshot and he appreciated/chuckled. In the post-game, Frank described the team's preparation and effort game being as though it were a regular season game and went on to criticize the students for not showing up. However, the exhibition feel was apparent in the steve dave resort wear guayabera.
Nancy Neg's
-Jamar being Jamar.
-Rodney played like crap. It was a little disconcerting to see Rodney struggle like that. He got yanked because he let his offense affect his defense. Just had a really terrible game. Ended up down the bench commiserating with Shane Southwell. Those two should not have anything to talk about. Please Rod, don't.
-Victor Ojeleye not sure if this was just a Frank moment, if he took most of Jamar's minutes, if he took most of Rod's minutes. Not sure if this was some sort of Semi bone getting thrown. Any way you slice it, it sucked. I actually like Vic because he seems to realize that he kind of sucks. His Victor wince face tells me this. Chris Merriweather or Clent Stewart never seemed to have that level of self-awareness. Well, make the most of it Vic. Turn evil. Start throwing elbows and jawing at the competition. Something.
-Shane being Shane.
-Omari/Nino. Oh what hijinks these two will get up to. I'm kind of hoping Jamar takes him under his wing and tells them all about how to piss off Frank. Wait, no I don't. Maybe they realize that there are a ton of minutes out there when people go in to Frank's dog house and start working really hard. Or maybe they look at the roster and transfer. I hope we have some junkyard cats in the making. However, that recipe takes 1 year to bake.
-Tall Skinny guy. Welp, hopefully you turn in to JO. No one will really be expecting that, but good luck.

This sucked. I really had high hopes for Nino. I didn't really for EMAPE, but he looked great in the scrimmage.
-
i always enjoy the peggy pos but never so much the nancy negs
-
Diaz's hands belong in the Peggy Po's. Once he stops being an 18yo 7'er he could be really good.
Omari is big and showed signs of being aggressive. I think if he doesn't turn Jamar'ish, he could do well.
V disappointed that Nino didn't get anything other than junk minutes.
Fully agree on Sprads.
Angel isn't as fast as most people thought, because most wanted him to be Denis, and he isn't. He is much more like Jake in skill set.
Also, we will be able to run this year. Should have been a huge Peggy Po. Only thing that may hold this back is Gip's lungs.
My main concern is our physicality in the post during conf and being pushed around. W/O Gip in, we may be running a whole lot of high post.
-
It looked like we spent a lot of practice on our transition game.
-
new skinny guy is also pretty good on fast break. kk's nancy neg of him is off imo.
-
That Jones kid is pretty fast. I kept calling him "The Jet" throughout the game. I'd say that should probably be his nickname.
We need to call Omari and Big_Gip the Bash Brothers. They have the exact same body and look like they would love to crush people.
The PA guy referring to JHR as JO? Holy moly. I did not expect that. Thought it was great though. Could you imagine him dunking on a bitch to cap off a 15 point run, with the introduction to Sandstorm faintly being heard and him shouting "JAAYYYYYYYY-O!" into the mic? Can't wait for that.
I like that Angel has tattoos. I do. Really. I just wish he had more tattoos.
Forgot how fun garbage basketball games are.
-
I enjoyed both the peggy po's AND the nancy neg's.
-
Good stuff.
All I really looked at is who looks to be major players in Frank's rotation (besides the times when Frank decides to be Frank).
Sprads, McGruds, Irving, JO look to be the key returners. And probably Jamar if he quits being Jamar.
Angel and Gip look like they can play, but like most FR will be a bit up and down.
There is 7, then you have to figure on a couple more making the move into Frank's regular rotation, though that might not be set until late January or early February with Frank. It will be interesting to see who works themselves up there. I'd think Southwell would factor in considering he did last year. After that I really don't know, at least based on just the Hays game.

I want to believe this, but I don't really believe it yet. JO runs very well, for a 7 footer. Angel and Will leading the way on the break? Meh. We do have a tremendous amount of ball handlers, but I think you will see most fast breaks go in to a 3 pointer, or a secondary break after the D beats us back. We'll get to the line a lot this year, but I don't see this team comparing to the showtime days of Sutton/Denis. Maybe when Jamar gets back I will change my tune. Dunno.

Agree with all that. The Frank "we are one of my fastest teams" talking point is one I really, really want to believe, but I didn't see enough to know one way or another if this is really true.

i agree. AD has tons of upside.

slowest guys are running point. Angel isn't slow with the ball but he isn't lightning. Spradling is Will.

Angel is fast you idiots.
-
Angel is fast you idiots.
I agree, but he isn't "Denis, I'm going to run a 1 man break" fast or at least I didn't see that Sunday. And it will take some time for the rest of the guys to play off of him on the break.

he threw, like, 3 fast break lob passes. pretty great to watch.

Comparing all our of guards speed to Denis is like comparing our bigs scoring ability to Beasley. Pretty stupid.

But do you see what I'm saying? You could be the fastest player in the conference this year and be quite a bit slower than Denis.

I really hope Vic becomes a huge trashtalker/dirty player/junk it up doberman. Is only to save him now.

That's true. It is also true that last year we had no transition game so anything looks fast now. The truth is in the middle and I am reserving judgement about where it stands after that.

I completely see what you were saying. I suppose brining up Denis was a bad comparision, but he's THE standard for me on individual speed on the break. FWIW I think comparing one particular skill from our guards (in this case speed) is valid, and much different than comparing ability to score (like your Beasley example) which requires a diverse set of skills.
All I was saying is that I didn't see that type of speed (not even that he was as fast as Denis, but even approaching that type of speed) for him to lead the break in the same manner as Clemente. That's not to say that Angel can't play fast, he'll likely play faster than Pullen even was able to, but to have the kind of break Frank is talking about I think he needs a guy with Denis' kind of speed, and I don't know that we have that. To be fair, its not probably something that would be easy to see against a team like Hays.
-
he'll likely play faster than Pullen even was able to
will take :D
-
Seemed like he has great vision up the floor though. Could make up for a lack of speed? Jake had horrible vision on the fast break.
-

Really appreciated that in the midst of a thread that made me so simultaneously excited/anxious, this comment made me laugh at picturing Denis flipping pancakes. Just saying...
-

True. He looked to have really good vision Sunday. I still want to see him against better teams; at VTech will be a good measure, and we'll have a really clear picture on how big of impact Angel (and Gip) can make by Christmas.
-
Watson nancied up all his minutes. Maybe because he's out of shape and hasn't practiced, but right now he's the player most likely to mid-seasoned Frank'd.
-

Was it just me or the under shirt? I thought he looked soft and chubby! :dunno:
-
Frank left him in there a lot longer than I thought he would.
-
Watson appeared to flat give up on a few plays. Both I am thinking of were rebound fights where the ball came low and a couple of their guys and one or more of our guys came into the scrum. Watson just stood up, let himself get shoved out, and watched what happened.
I can honestly say I haven't seen a Frank guy do that before.
I don't see Watson playing this year.....like, at all. He needs to get a off season worth of bounce between Nov and Dec.

When it comes to Angel and team speed, I am on
Team _33.

The PA Announcer referring to J.O. as J.O. is awesome.

The PA Announcer referring to J.O. as J.O. is awesome.
yes, this is true.
also confirmed that omari is lacking a neck of any substance.
also, i didn't really learn anything from this game with the exception that our new floor is screwed up. i do like the font though.

Pretty much agree. Can confirm that Spradling has one the smoothest shots Frank has coached, though.
Floor looks as bad in person as it does on the interweb.
Other thoughts.. Watson sucks and will be kicked off the team midseason with an aggravated eye hernia when he is getting no PT. Omari is jacked. May end up sucking but if he can bang guards like Dom, Ill tolerate him. Gipson is good. Diaz is ?.
This team will finish 4th in BigXII. 9-7. Will beat Alabama and WVU. Another NCAA exit in round of 32.

anyone that ever saw ar-t play, or saw highlights or even just read a scouting report for at least the last two years- "this guy doesn't look like clemente, play like him and isn't anything like him at all in any way".
Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) november 2011 kstate fans (probably combos) - "angel looks a little slower than clemente, imo. just an observo, take it for what it's worth".

its the same reason Sprads is the new Henson.

Denny jr. IMO.*

It's not that I believe it, it's that I WANT to believe it. I guess if he just nails a bunch of 3's I'll call it good.

When frank was saying this team was fast, I figured our point guards were going to be faster. Since sprads still plays on this team, I figured he was talking angel. Don't blame me when frank's quotes about this year's team turn out to be as exaggerated as Art speaking about Asprilla.

both are mexican

yup, i seriously doubt either one of them speak american. my guess is you can still find dennis sleeping in frank's basement and picking cabbage for extra cash somewhere near junction city on the weekends.
what a joke of a team.

Overheard some EMAW's at the game referring to the new court as the "poop deck." The "poop deck."
Appears we have also added Briggs tarps on the team chairs.

not everyone is a college basketball fan or reads scouting reports for every kid that might come to kansas state. So don't blame people when they try to correlate one person to another that they are very familiar with. I think we can all take solace in the fact that we are all wild cats.

Yes, blame the crap out of our racist fans. Its as bad as tucks at the start of last season saying how similar Spradling was to Henson.

A house divided against itself cannot stand and this house is stronger than sticks, stones, and steel.
-
I always thought that being a fast team had more to do with the bigs and wings ability in transition than the PG. :dunno:
That's one way to do it. Roy's Kansas teams were the template. Miles and Hinrich and Boschee were quick but not super quick. What made them fast teams were the athletic wing players who would create turnovers on the wings or at the top of the lane and then have 2-on-1 or 2-on-0 runouts with one of the guards. Or the guards would create a TO and feed to a streaking wing who had beaten his guy down the court. We saw some of this with Dom, as referenced earlier.
You could say we were a fast team with Denis because he was 1/5 and scored a lot by just beating everyone down the court. One superfast player in basketball can probably make a fast team, as opposed to, say, football. Of course, Jake and Dom were also able to get out there with Denis some, but I wouldn't have considered us a fast team without Denis (like last year).
I think Frank sees more of the Roy/KU model this year. Some additional speed in the wings, some good passing by the guards, scoring some transition baskets by pushing the ball on 2-1 and 2-2 type situations, rather than one guy beating everyone else down the court on his own.

HBBIQ explosion right there folks

if frank loves fast teams so much maybe he should give the Chester E Peters cherrypick offense a shot.

I should add another component of Roy's fast teams was the midcourt outlet pass. Rebound or inbounds to a guard at midcourt, meanwhile a wing or two would be busting it down to the basket to try to get behind the defense...guard would bring the ball down looking for the wing behind the defense or for an open lane for a drive. If the wing was guarded and the guard drove and the rest of the defense wasn't set yet, the guard would be able to get a layup, or a short jump shot, or pass to the wing down low for a layup-dunk if the wing's defender came to stop the guard's drive. (If a defender collapsed down on the drive from, say, Boschee at the 3-point line, the pass might go out there for the open three, instead.) If there was nothing there, guard would circle back out on top and look for the trail man coming down the court as the last option in the secondary break, who might drive to the basket w/ or w/o the help of a quick screen while the defense is still getting set.
We saw Denis do a lot of that, occasionally off a midcourt pass, but more often he would just use his speed to get the ball down the court before the defense was set.

Slimz is correct.

I agree. However, us crashing the boards incredibly hard with our wings (like McGruder) makes this somewhat difficult. Further, not sure if there is enough evidence on Gipson (think it was him that threw that long pass to Martin which wasn't terrible) but JO and co. aren't exactly known for their outlet passing. KU had the benefit of some pretty great transitional passers as bigs and an offense that did not ask as much out of the 3's to board as hard.
It is entirely possible that we make some changes, but so far I'm not sure that we have 1) faster guards 2) significantly faster wings 3) bigs capable of throwing quick outlet passes to midcourt 4) a motivation to make Rodney turn and sprint instead of crashing for 6-8 boards a game.

tom asbury used to love to talk about the speed of his incoming teams too. running and gunning, and the cat fans ate it up.

You know who never did talk about the run n gun? Wools. That man loved the triangle and perimeter passing.

I'm pretty sure he talked about being more up-tempo a couple of times. every coach does, really.

Yep. Style of play/mentality makes a big difference.

He did. They do.

only the coaches that need to rely on gimmicks talk about such absurd crap.
