Title: 4th St. Discovery Center (Dax/Townie bait)
Post by: Kat Kid on November 01, 2011, 08:47:05 PM
per yesterday's Merc:

"For 2012, the center is expected to make $295,000 in admissions revenue and $37,500 for facility usage fees revenue."

Suggested admissions fees: Adults $9  Seniors: $7  Children: $4  School groups: $3  Under 2: FREE

Suggested rental fees:

"elegant evening" full access (500 people) $2,700 Saturdays, $2,200 all other nights
small "elegant evening" (200 people) $2,300 Saturdays, $1,800 all other nights
"cocktail reception" 2 hour limit  (350 people) $1,200 (200 people) $1,000
"discovery party" 2 hour limit, exhibits and party room (40 people) $150

so.....

I guess each week we'll have 220 paying families of 4 (or equivalent) strolling through the Discovery Center's door.  Every week.  Considering the population base, the slashed to non-existent field trip budgets for schools, I'd say it is a little optimistic.  But maybe someone else has some more relevant experience?

$721/week is what they are expecting to do as far as the usage fees.  If anyone wants to put the Discovery Center up against the Wareham (approximately $600 with $600 held for incidentals) or the KSU Alumni center for weddings it is not competitive.

I thought it would be embarrassing, but this seems as though it will be a perfect storm of suck.  Someone throw me something positive about this fraud before I have to go down some beers by myself at my fancy Long Johns.

so rough ridin' stupid.  open it up for free, send the $6/year subsidy bill to every man, woman and child in the city and have people actually use the Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) thing.

same with the zoo.

For comparison, Topeka's Discovery Center drew 1500 it's opening week (4 days).      That of course is a surge that dropped off significantly.

Man, that sounds like a decent turnout for a town of 125,000 people.  Wonder what ours will do after everyone's been through once.

This is why the education tax went down in flames in Colorado yesterday.  I get sick of seeing things like my town building a new "rec center" only to find out it's just an overgrown Romper Room.

The only hope is the conference center is massively K-Stateo'd too so that some overflow is sent to the Discovery Center meeting rooms. The prices seem to be geared toward corporate events.

I did lol at the DC director claiming they're getting 1 call a week about holding weddings and receptions there. That's 1 call a week with hysterical laughter on the other end.

Are there nice public restrooms?

This guy I met drinks alcohol all the way from KC to Manhattan on game days and often has to pee right when he gets to town.  The center has a great location and what appears to be ample parking.

The discovery center does a lot of other kinds of stuff too.  And more importantly to some people who have already bitched about it in this thread, your taxes aren't paying for it! (assuming you aren't in hotel rooms)

I know a little bit about the discovery center.  its a good investment if things keep going the way they have been.

I believe you get a discount as well with the zoo membership but I'm not sure how much it is, there is an association which helps to set this up.

Every time I come into Manhattan for work I think the tornado thing was a fail.

It kinda does, but only if you approach it from the back. Also the top was meant to suggest the Flint Hills.

Building looks cool. Have no real desire to go in though, and certainly no desire to pay nine bones to look at some weeds or whatever. Would use it to pee after drinking in the car for two hours, though.

"Can I get the check for you?"
"Well, that's completely unnecessary. We can...."
"I'll get it for you. Waitress, just put their stuff on my tab. Anyways, what are you guys up to tonight?"
"Well we were going to go see a movie....."
"Can I pay for your tickets? Here, here's $30. Get some popcorn too"
"I......"
"Oh man, I almost forgot. Here's $50 so you can fill up your car with gas. Wouldn't want you to run out on the other side of town would we? Good seeing you, Stevesie. We should do this more often"

Pro Tip: Tell your friend that if he likes to get to town before the gameday rush hits and can get through town quickly while holding it, the best place to use the facilities is the Engineering complex.  There's always pleanty of parking in lot north of Fielder and multiple clean restrooms in every direction when he gets inside the atrium.

One mix at the Yardhouse or other not-applebees-but-still-not-elite locations.
