Title: Lunchtime with s'clams
Post by: pissclams on March 01, 2010, 12:16:25 PM
Hello folks, clams here again over lunchtime and about to sit down with a wonderful meal and discuss various topics live from Gates & Sons in Leawood.  Today's menu consists of a combo sandwich (sub turkey for ham) and an order of fries.  water to drink of course. sauce?  hot & spicy, don't be a dumbass.

I most certainly am a meat-atarian.  That image just didn't appeal to my taste buds at this moment.  I enjoyed a meatball marinara on wheat with provolone, and a bag of sun chips.  One of those tasty $5 subs from subway. Delicious.

The Red Cream is a mix up with Arthur Bryants, which would be a good example of a place 'clams should hit later this week.  Sandwich w/o fries.  Tip the guy making it, get double meat.  Keep the big ass cup as a trophy for eating more smoked food in one sitting than most people outside of KCMO would dare.

Love Gates.

I'm a fan of Bryant's meat and Gate's sauces.

Had one of the Gates platters this past Friday.  Dropped a rib on the floor and felt really down about it afterwards.  :frown:

This could possibly be a new thread all in its own, but does anyone else think Oklahoma Joe's is a bit overrated?  I mean it's good BBQ and tastes fine, but nothing compared to Gates or Bryants IMO.

Thoughts?

I have a thought. GTFOOMF!!!  OK Joes is the best. Gates and AB is good, but I hit OK Joes way more and think it is superior BBQ. Damn it, now I'm hungry.

Overall, I am with you on this one.  However, it depends on what you get.  None of the big names are better than the others across the board, imo.  Just depends on what kind of BBQ you want(ribs, beef, sausage, etc.).

QFT.

True test of a good BBQ joint is how good is the food without the sauce, imo.  If you can enjoy their ribs(etc) without sauce, they are doing something very right.  Good sauce just takes it over the top.

OK Joes has a good sandwich(Zman) but other than that, I prefer elsewhere.

I feel like I am out-thinking myself on this.  On the one hand, I know that 'Clams is a fan of fine dinning.  On the other, he I know he loves a good "dive.".....and there's Chipotle as his instinctive reflex move.   :dunno:

Day 2 of Lunchtime with s'clams finds us at the Panda Express on 135th and Metcalf, in sunny South Overland Park Kansas also known as the 66224.  The "Panda" and I have recently become friends after a long hiatus which was caused by 'sclams gettng some really bad Panda one day.  Well, years have gone by and I have only one thing to say - Hello dear friend Panda, You have been missed!

The Panda brings a lot to the table- the price is right, the food is fresh, and the location is in a clean/non-gang neighborhood.  Upon my entrance into the Panda today I was welcomed by two young asian hot chicks (stunz, pm if interested) with beautiful birdlike voices.  The always friendly staff saw too it that my palate would not be denied, hooking me up with large portions of freshly cooked asian inspired classics- Firecracker chicken, Orange chicken, Crab rangoon, and something interesting they make that they call "fried rice"

I'm glad everyone was able to join me today for Lunchtime with s'clams.  Be sure to tune tomorrow, where will s'clams eat next???   :dunno:

a beautiful and welcoming Panda Express storefront!

you can see the "fried rice" on the left, below.

orange chicken @ 7 o'clock, firecracker chicken at midnight, "fried rice" ranging from midnight until 6 o'clock

they have a tradition of providing an aftermeal snack, today they gave me a cookie with a short note inside of it.  I believe the hot asian chicks behind the counter slipped the note into my cookie as a way of letting me know that they were down.

Did you consume the entire meal?
yes, roughly 2000 calories, 2000 mgs sodium

Today's report is better than yesterday's.  Still, this whole lunch report deal is not living up to the hype it received.  I'll check back tomorrow.  If things don't improve, it may be my last time.
we're still getting off the ground here, if you don't like it then feel free to eat lunch with someone ELSE.

do people look at you funny when you are taking pictures of your food??
no, it's not like i've got a DLSR out.  for all anyone knows i'm sending an email.

Great report.

Question the choice of food.  My last 3-5 experiences at Panda have been horrific.  Maybe I need to bring the beautiful birdlike voices?   :dunno:
I think the Panda can be finicky.  Be careful which locations you frequent, be aware of your surroundings.

Looks like implementation of the sodium reduction phase gets pushed back one more day in favor of more research.

thoughts on fogo de chao/other brazilian steakhouse places... if you've never been, you should go. do it once and then decide on your own. i've been to a few and fogo was the best. not something that i'd do every week, but i've thoroughly enjoyed the times that i have done it. best to do w/ a small group of friends.
