Title: Utilizing the FB
Post by: SabiNation on October 20, 2011, 08:49:56 PM
Watching the Arizona-UCLA game...Arizona having tremendous deal of success running out of 2 and even 3 back sets. Even their fullback has had a few nice 10 yard runs.  Got me thinking about how we also have a monster fullback that happens to be a pretty good athlete.

Am I just silly to think that Braden may be able to have a few nice 5-10 yard carries every game?  I feel like it would open up the Hubert/Klein run game (stretch read/zone read) if we could add another threat like that to the equation, and it could even open up the passing game.  Seems like any time he's in there it is pretty much a given that he'll be Hubie's lead blocker.

 :dunno:

Sorry if I'm just being LFBIQ

But to answer your question, I'd say no.  Braden Wilson is a bad runner. Slow, not powerful (for his size) and has no moves.  His only carries are (and imo, should be) to keep defenses honest with a carry or two every other game.  Otherwise, he's a lead blocker through and through.

If Braden had any kind of balance, coordination or ability to run through people with the ball in his hand, I would agree with you.

He's a good athlete.  If he were 40-50 pounds lighter you would see those abilities.  But we need a guy that does what he can do.

And most importantly for him, he can make a living doing what he does at the next level.

I'd rather pass to Braden off the bootleg, otherwise, he's a lead blocker..and Snyder recognized this from day 1.

That's what the Gronkowskis say.  After watching Rob destroy the Chiefs tonight, it's very hard to wait.

I read through this again, and was reminded that Wilson might be about 4th or 5th best FB of the Snyder tenure.

But, the tucks love him.  It tells you how far the program has fallen in overall talent.

I don't think you watch him.  He is an outstanding blocker.
