Their offense looks very good, their defense . . . not so much.   Both defenses are bad, GT horrible tackling fundamentals, ku looks like they didn't even practice against the option so far.

should be a great game in lawrence.  still haven't seen either team play but my instincts tell this sunflower showdown should be a humdinger.

yeah I agree with that.  KU has a solid o-line and an above average run game.  Their defense is slow.

ku's offense just keeps making nice plays and keeping drives going, of course GT's defense is coached by Al Groh and he has never impressed me.

On defense, ku is just getting destroyed so far, multiple plays where there wasn't any ku guys within yards of the ball carrier.

Nice catch by the ku guy.

From the LJWorld game comment thread in response to a question from a self-described new sqwawk football fan asking if they had ever been good on defense: "D has rarely been KU's long suit. Was pretty good in 1968."

Discussion has pretty much crash landed from bowl game talk in the first half to lynching Gill, questioning Mangino's firing and the cold realization no conference will want them.

Very easy to hate right now.  If you don't like GIll and what he is trying to put together then you don't see the big picture.  Yep, the defense is absolutely horrible and should be held accountable...the offense looks much better than last year and is moving in the right direction. Gill is a stand up guy...he recruits very well...and has some things to learn, but is going to be a very, very good head coach.  Again, I love Kansas Athletics, but we can't expect to get proven coaches when we have a vacancy.  We get guys that need to learn and hope to hang onto them...we have one in Gill and I hope we hang onto him.

However...the "I told you so" guys will always be there and offer not much more to the program.

If I had to pick a win, I would probably go with Texas Tech. It's a home game against a mediocre team following a huge loss. KU will probably lose, but I think they have a halfway decent chance of pulling the upset.

7 passes, 768 total yds, 606 rushing yds, etc.  Man, the numbers from this game are just incredible.

600+ rushing yards has to be some kind of record in and of itself

Watched a bit of the ku game.  Both GaTech and KU are horrible.  KU has the smallest and slowest defense I've ever seen in my life.

The worst part of that debacle was our D-coordinator's take on the problems we had on defense.  It was pretty much like......"yeah, they schemed us.  We knew what they were doing and just didn't make any adjustments to fix it.  We thought that if we adjusted we would open up a pandora's box of other problems so we just stuck with the plan."

Um, lolwut?  As if "pandora's box of other problems" would have been worse than what we ran out there in the second half.  Geez, that game blew nuts.

Not surprising that you guys would be all  :opcat:  :opcat:  :opcat: after a (black) head coach has had one recruiting class.  Remember, Mangino didn't have big-time success at KU until he was forced to fire Quartaro and bring in Warriner.  Gill has at least recruited some talent up to this point with guys like JaCorey Shepherd and Darrian Miller.

The RP comparos are astounding.  At least the "talent" RP recruited was actually legit.  Not an undersized 3* WR nobody has every heard of, or a player everyone else recruited as a db.

I think Gill might have been caught off guard by GT being so successful while not doing much catching and throwing at all. I expect him to learn from this experience, and KU will be a force to be reckoned with now that he realizes the game is even simpler than block, tackle, catch, and throw.

Still need help picking the best chance ku has to win the rest of the year, still leaning towards that being the Cats.

If I had to pick a win, I would probably go with Texas Tech. It's a home game against a mediocre team following a huge loss. KU will probably lose, but I think they have a halfway decent chance of pulling the upset.
Tech is not mediocre.

In terms of the Big 12, they are very middle-of-the-road. Honestly, if I were in a pool like this and hadn't picked KU yet, I might just save that pick for the final week of the season and hope everyone else gets eliminated before it comes to that. I'm sure they will win one or two more, but I doubt they will be favored in any game from here on out.

I've seen some of the greatest rushing attacks in history mow through crappy and in some cases pretty good ku and K-State teams over the years.

So imagine my surprise (being serious) that in this year, 2011, when I saw that Georgia Tech set an all time NCAA record for the most yards per rush against ku.

If there's one coach in America who could coach up a defense to at least put the breaks on a slot/veer/option attack it's Turner Gill isn't it?

66-24? Holy shat. Barkley was right. Turner Gil should've got Auburn job. Far better than Chizik.

He must not have seen Chizik's Iowa State teams.  And he must not have noticed the 624 yards that Chizik's defense gave up to Clemson today.

It's really hard to buy new players when the NCAA is breathing down your neck.

Yeah easily Whitlock's dumbest talking point.  At the time of hire everyone, including white people at Auburn hated the Chizik hire.  Jason needs to realize the people he is pandering to with talking points like that will always view him as a fat black race-baiter no matter how many Imus' and lacrosse players he defends.

Our defensive coordinator makes Cosh look like Mike Ditka.

I don't remember what Whitlock said at the time of the Chizik hire, but pointing out Gill's shortcomings to this point is completely fair, especially as a dig on Barkley after his equally fat black race-baiting comments that "race was the No. 1 factor" and his humorously symmetrical suggestion that Auburn should have hired Gill BECAUSE he was black ("it would have created a buzz").

Besides, I'm pretty sure Whitlock joyfully embraces his income-producing image as a fat black race-baiter.

KU doesn't need DB's when we can RB teams' faces off.  Everyone knows the best defense is a long, sustained offense with 18 running backs sharing the load.  Actually, we should convert more CB's to RB's so we can get more W's.

Not to mention the fact they averaged under 4.0 YPC against a Georgia Tech defense that allowed Mid Tenn St to rush for 5.0+ YPC against them.

And yeah, when you give up an NCAA record 12.1 YPC in one game there really is nothing else that really should matter.

When GT busted off that 95 yard TD run on the first play, it really was something straight out of the days when bad ku and K-State teams would face OU and NU's wishbone and Power I running game.

The difference was the ku and K-State defenses had guys out there trying to do the right things to stop them, last Saturday ku had nothing even resembling a defense that was set up to stop that kind of attack.

Do you really want your coaches admitting stuff like this?

Quote
Inside their locker room, the Jayhawks are trying to keep it together. That starts with the coaches, and KU defensive coordinator Vic Shealy knew that in the moments after the game.

Shealy pulled his defense together and told his players what they already knew: He had been outmaneuvered by Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson. With a young team, it was important for Shealy to shoulder all of the blame for this one. KU came with a game plan that was too similar to what worked last year, and a few new wrinkles by Georgia Tech rendered the Jayhawks basically useless.

“They kind of knew what we were about to do, honestly,” Patmon said.

Shealy, in his first year as defensive coordinator, showed plenty of guts by facing questions from reporters for about 15 minutes after the game.

“Ultimately,” Shealy said, “whenever your plan gets schemed, it comes back to me. What happened today is on Vic Shealy. I take responsibility for it.”
