Title: Northern Illinois
Post by: felix rex on September 10, 2011, 06:19:38 PM
This is not your run-of-the-mill MAC team. Really more comparable to a mid-tier SEC team if you objectively look at the tangibles.

Post by: felix rex on September 10, 2011, 06:21:12 PM
They definitely pass the "eyeball test". These are legit, experienced D-1 athletes. That front seven would have a lot of Big East teams scared.

Not kidding

This is not just a bunch of 2 star suburban Chicago kids
Title: Re: Northern Illinois
Post by: felix rex on September 10, 2011, 06:23:34 PM
I think Northern Illinois should expect to win this game.  The best MAC teams are better than the bottom-feeders of the BCS conferences.
Title: Re: Northern Illinois
Post by: felix rex on September 10, 2011, 06:24:39 PM
One of their starting offensive lineman is none other than Logan Pegram from Silver Lake, KS!
Title: Re: Northern Illinois
Post by: felix rex on September 10, 2011, 06:26:34 PM
I hope Big 12 fans understand how big a challenge this will be. They're legit. I mean, they're not Alabama or anything, but they're probably on par with a team like Missouri - although they have a much better quarterback.
Title: Re: Northern Illinois
Post by: felix rex on September 10, 2011, 06:29:02 PM
NIU is a GOOD team. The fact that they are in the MAC, have lower rated recruits, etc means nothing. They killed an Army team probably above the level of McNeese State. This will be a very tough game.
Title: Re: Northern Illinois
Post by: Stevesie60 on September 10, 2011, 06:30:04 PM
Any BCS team would have difficulty keeping their explosive offense below 4 TD's. OU may be able to do it, but on a bad night, who knows?
Title: Re: Northern Illinois
Post by: felix rex on September 10, 2011, 06:31:09 PM
I think NIU is about on par with Baylor, Tech and KSU. what we know is they had a very good offense last year and return pretty much everything except their RBs (and RBs are pretty replacable if you have a solid and experienced O-line plus a veteran QB).
Title: Re: Northern Illinois
Post by: felix rex on September 10, 2011, 06:31:49 PM
They also got a pretty highly recruited Running Back out of Hutch JC. Dude was 4* and had offers from ATM, PITT, MINN, NEB, WISC, So CAR etc.

"He's out at the 57 yard line!!" - KU radio guy

These guys are terrible
Title: Re: Northern Illinois
Post by: felix rex on September 10, 2011, 06:34:04 PM
Sporting News had NIU ranked 34th in their preseason rankings, with KU at 92nd. The Big 12 should be pretty pleased with a win over a team that they rank ahead of Pitt, UNC, and Texas.
Title: Re: Northern Illinois

"Maybe one of the most experienced offenses in college football"
Title: Re: Northern Illinois
Post by: felix rex on September 10, 2011, 06:34:57 PM
Someone posted Steele's "combined experience" chart and it had NIU as the 26th-most experienced team in the country. A new coach and few returning starters on defense isn't going to make them any worse than KSU, KU, ISU, BU, etc on a neutral field.
Title: Re: Northern Illinois
Post by: felix rex on September 10, 2011, 06:35:59 PM
They won the MAC West and throttled Fresno St in a bowl game last season. They've been to three straight bowls (five since 2004). KU should win at home, but this isn't a game that should make or break a coach.
Title: Re: Northern Illinois
Post by: felix rex on September 10, 2011, 06:38:28 PM
The Sagarin predictor is usually a fairly good approximation of the point spread on games. Using Sagarin, if this game had been played in Lawrence last year Northern Illinois would have been an 18-point favorite. Big win for the Big 12 on the line tonight.
Title: Re: Northern Illinois

Win, lose or draw the Jayhawks should feel like champions after tonight's contest.

Looks like a full house in the gridiron club. KU needs to get that big home crowd involved to rattle this QB. He is salty.

It would be a very good win for KU, especially at this point in their program.

Ain't going to happen though.  NIU is outclassing them all over the field.
Title: Re: Northern Illinois
Post by: Trim on September 10, 2011, 07:18:44 PM
I had ku picked to win this in the suicide pool, partly because I heard Fitz and the crew state on "The Drive" that ku was a 7-point favorite but that they expected NIU to at least cover and likely win.  I later found NIU was the fave and switched to taking my bye this week.  It will be devastating to my chances if ku gets the W here.  'grats, 'clams.

What's entertaining but annoying at the same time is listeining to Bob Davis bitch about ku getting called for holding twice "not having to do with the touchdown" that ku scored.  Somebody please tell that bitch that holding is holding, and gets called when it happens, whether or not it's involved with the score.

I like when the hawks score a lot of touchdowns.  But it seems like the other team is also going score a lot of touchdowns.  Don't like that as much.  Its kinda like a Rocky fight.  He punches the other guy a bunch, but god darnit, he sure takes a beating.

they were predicted last.  doesn't take a lot to be better than that.  sure they are better than last year's team.  but it sounds like their defense isn't that good, and their fans were saying how there coaching was terrible.  So, in summary, yes they are better than predicted!!!  Hang a banner jayhawk nation and chingon!

I'm not part of the argument about them being better than last year.  I'm trying to figure out how to salvage not having picked them in the elimination pool either of the first 2 weeks when nearly every other person in the pool did so.  Their remaining home games are Tech, OU, us and Baylor.  Plus Mizzou in KC.

Idk about the rest of you but when I looked at KUs schedule NIU was one of the games I figured they would win. I admit I didn't really know much about NIU.  I thought they would win their first two and then 1-2 more with the next  most likely win being ISU. So I kinda expected them to win. Unlike some retards who apparently figured they wouldn't win 2 games and thats why they are throwing around phrases like "huge improvement" or "big win." Be honest. If you didn't think they would beat NIU then just where the eff did you figure they would get their 2-3 wins?  :dunno:

holy eff, chings, they didn't exactly beat the '85 Bears.  Really outing yourself here.

NIU is pretty solid. This win is somewhat similar to our win over UCF last year.

exactly.  a real, meh win.  they have a new coaching staff, have you and chings never watched college football before?

UCF was our best win last year, hands down.

okay, we've outed another respect

Yeah, the other 6 teams that didn't make bowl games were way better than the 11-3 team with wins over Georgia, East Carolina, and Houston.

Oh, the Georgia team that lost 7 games last year, okay

Yeah, they also won 6. That's one more win than any team other than the Golden Knights that we played last year.

CF also didn't play BCS conference teams every game, whatever

I don't think anybody did.

Seriously? You off brand MAC douche bags are gonna come here and talk about it being a bad loss for your minor league team? That's funny. You guys have a nice rest stop though. Seriously, I cannot tell you how many times that big McDonald's/Gas Station complex has provided an oasis for me to piss and buy some snacks on my way to a real city.

KU smack talk vs NIU poster after epic KU win.  Funny that it describes Lawrencetucky as I pass through from MHK to KC.

Idk about the rest of you but win I looked at KUs schedule NIU was one of the games I figured they would win. :dunno:

KSU and McNeese State

KU's offense is better than KSU's.  ku's RB's are better than ours.  Not even close actually.  And Webb can throw a forward pass so he's automatically better than Klein.  NI has a fantastic offense; KU's defense is prolly equal to KSU's.

I think KSU is the better team. I just give KU the edge at home in a rivalry game against a KSU team that is isn't much better than them and beat them by 52 last year.

I'm not even taking anything from the EKU game.  The personnel decisions were just baffling to me, personally.  Especially at running back.  The only definitive thing I saw was an OL that didn't come ready to play.

Well, I also so a decent defense that actually had a few pass rushers and good linebackers.  So, all in all, I wasn't too angry after I finally got to sit down and watch the whole thing from start to finish.

hopefully bill can watch a TON of game tape on Kent State and won't hold his team back again so they'll look super awesome next weekend and I can change my mind.

You won't see anything until after Miami.  Kent State is horrible.  Like...really horrible.

Yeah, I wouldn't take anything from that game unless we actually lose. If we lose, we might not be beating anybody else.

Likewise, if we 10-7 Kent State then we know we won't be beating anyone else

10-7 wouldn't be nearly as bad as something like 45-42. I'm still much more skeptical about the defense than I am the offense. The offense will be pretty good.

KU's offense is better than KSU's.  ku's RB's are better than ours.  Not even close actually.  And Webb can throw a forward pass so he's automatically better than Klein.  NI has a fantastic offense; KU's defense is prolly equal to KSU's.

I'd hold judgement till after Miami and after KU plays Ga Tech.

However, as it stands now you appear to be correct.

I'm not really looking for scores.   I'm looking to see if our OL can actually get a push and if we're still able to rush the passer effectively.

I also want to start seeing Brown carry the ball more.  Hubert is our third best back.  I have no idea why Snyder decided to play mind voodoo with Brown and Pease, but it most definitely contributed to the EKU debacle.

Just wait till you see Brown and Pease in the Wildcat

Yeah, they've scored a total of 19 points in two games. So, even if our offense doesn't improve at all I don't see us losing that game.

Curb your enthusiasm, Kent State's defense picked Alabama off four times last week.

And they got a total of 7 points off of it. Its hard to see Kent State getting more than 5 turnovers, which is what EKU got. Bottom line is there offense is just as bad as EKUs and it's not like their defense can play much better than EKUs did last week.

Do you not understand that they played Alabama?  The number 2 team in the country, arguably the best defense in the college football?  If the offense doesn't improve we will lose.

Yeah and they scored 12 against UL Lafayette, who has the 102nd ranked defense.  I figure our defense is probably somewhere in between those two teams and probably the offense too. So, I would guess we could easily hold them to 10 and the offense will manage to score more than that even with absolutely no improvement.

Oh, and in case you were curious CBS has UL Lafayette ranked 119th.

What does ULL have to do with Kent State picking off the #2 team in the country 4 times, and KSU turning it over 5 times against an average at best FCS team?

was at the ku-niu game (free ticket of course...everyone in my group had a free ticket).

niu basically runs the tex tech offense.  ku played soft and niu threw quick passes and down the line passes all day on them.  saw no real pass rush from ku, they looked undersized and niu's wr's were winning every one-on-one.  i dont see any improvement from what they were last season defensively.

offensively ku has a solid run blocking line (though they were called for holding like 4 times) and some speed at rb.  they run a rather safe ball control offense that should keep the scores more reasonable from last season.  also should cut down on turnovers.  webb looked solid, he was able to buy time and make some nice throws when he was in trouble.  doesnt really have a deep ball and i dont see much from ku's wr's though the TE looks like he can catch the ball pretty well.    dont really remember webb running the ball, don't think the coaches really want him too.  all in all ku's offense will at least be serviceable if not unspectacular.

in summary i would compare this ku team to our team in '09.

I hope you meant '10 because the K-State D in '09 was light years ahead of this years KU D. The offense on the other hand was pretty effing awful.

This is one of the two games I thought ku would win this year.

They are done winning this season.  Their defense is the worst in the Big XII by a thousand.  They're offense is the worst in the Big XII, but only by forty (slightly worse than UT and KSU).
