Is this good or bad? Are we just used to them sucking?
OR, is Charlie Dickey quietly building a solid unit.
I PUT IT TO YOU!
-
Dickey seems to have done a pretty good job with the line the last few years. So fellas, I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Finney seems promising and Manase Foketi might end up being a late draft pick. Other than that I got nothing.
-
Dickey is the only member of the staff that I deem competent.
-
OL should be fine this season. Looking forward to seeing Simon play.
-
Dickey is on my short list to replace the Legend.
-
I'll reserve judgment until after the camping trip reports.

Yeah, you do that noob. Even hatter knows it's all about angling reports.

I remember when they would compare our Oline to that of the Washington Redskins weight-wise. I think we're getting back up in the 300lbs range again. :emawkid:

They did at pass protection. Not sure why Dickey was an instant sell to most and held in such esteem, his line play hasn't impressed to this point?

he really didn't have the personnel to be great at pass blocking. We had point-of-attack, power running game type of OL the past two years...especially in the interior. I think he's done an outstanding job with the OL. That OL went from being a collective pack of soft gerbils (when he arrived) in a passing system that couldn't run block despite having a passing game with a 1st round franchise type QB to one of the more physically imposing OL in the conference...and he did it in one year. Look, he wasn't blessed with All-Americans or All-conference lineman at every position. You play to your strengths and what the team needs. Our strengths were a workhorse, between the tackles, type back and we needed to do that to hold onto the ball and keep our defense off the field. You aren't going to turn a guard like Kendall into a great pass blocker regardless of how good you are as an OL coach.

Fair enough, they were outstanding in the run game and you're point on keeping the defense off the field is valid. Keeping the clock running while we held the ball was also a major benefit. However I thought we should have been at the least a bit more capable of holding the line in pass protection when the defense had to assume run on most every play, in that I'm still in wait and see mode.

Our offense has been pretty potency, especially considering the stiffs we had throwing the ball the last two yrs. The play of your o-line is generally indicative of the number of offensive pts you are able to score, even more so with the vanilla-ass offense we've had to run lately. And Dickey did a nice job with the o-lines at Utah, so it's not like he doesn't have a body of work to look at.

I concur.

I am afraid I now know the answer to the question that I posed. :flush:
-
New question: Just how good was Daniel Thomas :surprised:
-
Daniel Thomas was as good as this offensive line is bad.
-
Thomas was good. Thomas also ran behind a very good/experienced offensive line. Our current offensive line could be good, but they're very green right now. I think our running game will be fine this season, but for that to happen, our oline needs to get better.
-
First game of the season here folks. OL will gel as the season progresses. I (hope and pray) expect them to improve quite a bit before the next game. Hate bye weeks but we sure as hell could use this one.

They will probably improve, but "quite a bit" is overly optimistic.

when you are that bad its not hard to improve "quite a bit"

The offensive line last year rarely got to the 2nd level, once it got past the point of attack the ball carrier more times than not was on their own, hoping to pick up blocks from receivers and/or hoping the action of the play had the defense fooled.
