Title: MHK rambling thoughts...
Post by: fatty fat fat on July 29, 2011, 12:47:42 AM
http://www.ci.manhattan.ks.us/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=963

here is the new schedule. there is a chicago flight that arrives at nine ten, and a dfw flight that comes in twenty minutes later. MHK needs to be expanded ASAP or the terminal may simply explode.

That's 100+ passengers  plus family ready for long term/short term pickup.

I'd really appreciate it if we'd pull our heads out of our things and realized how urgent we need an airport upgrade. I flew mhk->DFW wednesday, and the small town feeley ness of MHK is just embarrassing. There isn't even a speaker system to announce "groups" when you board the plane. there is one person that works security!! no AC past security. And half of the parking lot still isn't even paved.

then when you arrive at DFW and just feel humiliated. Am I asking for DFW terminal D? No. but if you were to put MHK and Lawrence's airport side by side, and DFW and MHK side by side, you'd easily say MHK-Lawrence had more in common than DFW-MHK.

I don't know. it's just frustrating considering we are smack dab in the middle of the golden era regarding commercial flights.

A masterplan is being assembled as we speak and a terminal/parking expansion was presented this week to the city commission... but of course one of the commissioners groaned about where the money is going to come from to pay for it (one of the newly appointed far-right tea party nut jobs).

Right now the terminal is being looked at to more than triple in size and the parking lot double.

So yeah... its in the works, as well as additional flights (most likely denver).

Also, thanks for the post. But the Denver thing just makes no sense. Nor is it really needed.

Agreed on both statements except the denver flight does open up alot of connections to the west

Other options they are looking into include:

Las Vegas

Orlando

Phoenix  :dunno:

Salt Lake City  :dubious:

camKSU is a valuable addition to the goEMAW family of message board posters.  Allegiant is a great towny airline.  You can bet your ass you have two direct flights to vegas a week if they come to town.

Great point.  Also, cam any luck on getting an airport hotel or skycap shuttle service?

Possibly Airtran branded flights but you won't see regular 737 service into/out of MHK within 2 years or ever.  Even Airtran 717s would be a homerun.  If they do bring service it would prolly be via their Skywest partnership and some CRJ200s.

The Airtran brand will be phased out by then. The merger will be fully complete within the year.

Agreed on the 737/717. Not sure what Southwest has in mind with the partnerships.

Pardon my ignorance in this area, but why does a Denver connection not make sense?  I have always heard people say this, but never understood why.  Dallas and Denver are the same distance from MHK.  If United Express or Republic/Frontier flew into MHK, I would think that would be a pretty popular flight and open up the West???   :dunno:

how do we go about getting MHK renamed Manhattan Regional as opposed to Manhattan Municipal?  is there some sort of traffic cutoff?  is it just arbitrary?  if it is, we should change that asap.

Back to fff's original post, the mercury had something on the airport expansion on monday maybe?  I tried to read it online but they want you to be a subscriber or pay money.  They have to expand though as part of the NBAF bid, IIRC.  Not sure how there was one security person, there used to be a minimum of 3 and now I never see less than 4.  Will try to grab a beer this weekend with an airport insider other than camKSU.

No idea on shuttle service... It makes sense they would/should do this in the future. Or maybe think about public transportation... that would take vision though so  :flush:

Bad news though bros... the free parking isn't going to last forever. To give perspective, at most airports parking revenue is 40-70% of the total revenue of the airport.

In other news, MHK is getting a SportsClips next to the new Long John Silvers http://www.sportclips.com/ (http://www.sportclips.com/)

mhk had to get to 50k to get subsidies and whatever for p transit. we got there on the last census, so i am going to assume that p transit type stuff is in the works.

There are two guys on the commission who refuse to vote for anything that spends money...  the previously mentioned tea-party nut jobs

Manhattan really needs some new blood to shake things up and be a bit more progressive. The old guard is having trouble realizing Manhattan isn't a sleepy small college town anymore.

Get this... RCPD gets to set their (bloated) fiscal budget through the law board without any say from the city commission, i.e. the elected officials. So say we, as a community, wanted to decrease spending on renovating jail facilities or hiring more officers to bust young whipper snappers for public services like public transit or rental inspections, etc... we'd have to do so with whatever is left over after they set their budget.

what would suggest would be a good way for the citizenry to destroy rcpd (and other pds)?

I realize that 90% of Manhattan works for K-State or through some distant connection is employed by them, but it's about rough ridin' time the city try to create a little progress without K-State basically forcing them to do it, we finally got a university president with some vision, it would be nice if someone or some city council had some vision and balls too (I'm not really sure how the downtown discovery area ever happened, so don't even bring that up)

Regarding other hubs: Why do we need it?

Say you want to take a vacation to the worst city in the united states (san francisco). If you are bitching about laying over in DFW instead of Denver, please, drive to kansas city you ungrateful SOB. DFW is not that far off.

Also, who would fly to denver? American sure doesn't. United isn't signing an MHK contract especially after how we clowned great lakes. Frontier? LOL. I'd say flip has better places to go.

Southwest? Airtran? Are you people high? Can we be a bit realistic? let's focus on treating AA well. JMO.

i've used mhk aa five or six times, so 10 or twelve total flights. half have been full or oversold and the other half were all at or over 90% capacity. did not expect them to be as full as they have been.

Talked to shynn at the bar below Willie's a year a go.  He wanted to stop NBAF too.

confirmed that these tuck geniuses turned down 544k in east coast elite and kc money rather than fire half of a fatass, hitlerly cop to pay for a bus system?

Quote
A citywide bus system moved another step closer to reality this spring. The Flint Hills Area Transportation Authority director Anne Smith announced the authority has received a federal grant of $400,000 and a state grant of $144,000 to fund the bus system, provided the city matches the grants with $54,000.

if MHK had a Denver flight. I would not have drove to KC to get my ass to Denver, then to Anchorage. I'd be OK with Denver.

camKSU, thanks for the airport info.

Any talk about the taxi situation improving?  Calling a cab for a pickup at the airport to take you to a hotel is difficult, time consuming, and an all around quite maddening experience.  There are no shuttles of course.  It's like half the companies are based out if Junction City.

Clarion, Parkwood, and HI have shuttles.  Where are you staying?

Well, it's monday night and my mind is on MHK...go figure

1)What kind of expansion do we need? Another gate? I certainly think we could use an extra security "line" so you can get a duo going. (AKA two lines)

2)The bathroom needs to be bigger. IIRC, it's currenty two stalls, two toilets. We need to multiply that by four or so. (8X8).

3)LED screens that show "arrivals and departures" at least three of these, and one post-security.

4)More Purple/Powercat n stuff. Let is be known, hey, kansas state!

5)If a stewardess on a AA flight is being a smartass about manhattan, KANSAS, let her know the deal. Don't let that sh*t fly. I can hear her snickering everytime she was forced to say "manhattan, ks" Not cool.

6)Stoplight or something when you enter/exit the airport. Or a turn lane, something.

Any others? Serious responses only, thanks.

Could you imagine if there was a Chipotle in the airport?  I mean, of course it will be a Chilli's to go or a Pizza Hut Xpress or some such terrible food, but let us dream for a second!

I feel bad to do this to an MHK Regional thread, but Bob Strawn/tmcats is having an incredible meltdown on the Mercury message board.  Hop on at will goEMAWr's.  He will bite on any bait.

It starts getting particularly testy on Page 2

And lol @ We need to elect conservatives to get us out of the debt that conservatives got us into.  Genius!
