Some friends and I are going to San Francisco for spring break and are staying with a friend in Palo Alto. What are the things that I'd be stupid to miss out on? Also, are there any great food options around the attractions?

I hear the men up there are GORGEOUS. Is Testy Westy going with you?

FYI, not EVERY guy in SF is gay. Once bitten, twice shy my friend.

Not too worried about the gays. Try anything twice, I've always said. :dunno:

Ha! Not those friends. A more cultured group of friends.

Palo Friggin' Alto  it's the Lawrence of the San Francisco bay area.

You just wait until Oakland gets an NBAF!

In-N-Out burger.

Eat as much crab as you can.
Fisherman's Wharf (ferry around Alkatraz, but don't waste time going to it unless you have a night time tour).
Golden Gate Park
Obviously you have to cross Golden Gate Bridge
Walk around downtown/Chinatown
Muir Woods and Stenson Beach are awesome. Great mountain driving.
For food, we only ate at dives and don't remember any names. We saved all the gourmet expensive stuff for Napa/Sonoma

Alkatraz night time tour is good stuff.

Is that a euphemism for anal sex? :dunno:

Just got back from there. Between Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf there's an equivalent of an Italytown. Great food at any one of these places, but I highly recommend Michelangelo's. Any cafe in that area is great, too.

waks, you should come over.

I've been to Lawrence many times. How am I not cultured?

"San Francisco is more a European city, like Paris or Milan!"

Didn't say you're not cultured, just less cultured. I mean, they live in Lawrence, you've just been there. You just don't compare.

San Fran is cool to visit every now and again but I can't say that I'd wanna live there.
-
You should probably try to catch one of the local cultural events like, for example, the Folsom Street Fair.
-
Ride a cable car...I think they have some sort of cable car museum that seemed cool when I was a kid. The Musee Mecanique was also cool, but I haven't been there as an adult, so I don't know how fun it would be now.
Stop by Ghirardelli. :lick:
Watch the street performers. :jeffy:
It's about an hour and a half down the coast, but Monterey has a cool aquarium and some historic sights.

My cooler, more elite bro just got back from a trip to San Fran. His recs are to go to a Chinese place called R&G Lounge, try one of the many, many Thai places, and try a place in Stinson Beach (N of the GGB) called Parkside Cafe. Says it's got good seafood.
-
Bang easy / hot drunk chicks picked up in North Beach. Stop by Vesuvio & Spec's while you're there so everone will know how elite / eclectic you really are. Eat best pizza on Earch at Pizza Chicago in Palo Alto. If you play it's worth a trip down to San Jose to check out the stuff in the vault at Guitar Showcase. If it's still open and you ride Alice's Restaurant on Skyline in Woodside is a cool place to kill a Saturday afternoon. I'd recommend Jade in the Tenderloin for the hot Asian chicks(?) that used to hang out there but they're closed. :bawl:

Going to San Francisco and Napa in a few weeks. Haven't been before. Staying at the Embassy in Napa and the Westin in down town San Fran. Going to a Giants game, doing the Anchor brewery tour then doing some bike riding wine drinking thing in Napa. What else should we do? Fatty, any bay area advice?
-
The streets are very hilly. Make sure to set aside some time to drive around on them.

In Napa, just walk the streets find any place that looks good to eat. Chances are it's amazing. Sonoma has some good lunch/brunch places. Sterling Winery is a must. I also went to V Sattui and it wasn't bad. If you rented a car, on the way between Napa and San Fran, take a detour and go to Stenson Beach and the Muir Woods. Definitely worth going there.
In San Francisco, like i said before in the thread, don't go to Alkatraz, but definitely take a boat tour around it. Unless it's a night tour, then do it. Golden Gate Park was pretty awesome. Chinatown and downtown in general was fun.

Personally, I thought Alcatraz was really cool. The tour has won a lot of awards and it's pretty cool because a former guard and former prisoner guide you on an audio tour. It takes about three to four hours though so it is a big time commitment. We went to a couple of cool museums. The cable car museum was really cool, I thought the MOMA was pretty cool and we also went to this cool cartoon art museum. I would avoid spending much time in Fisherman's Wharf or on Pier 39. The only cool things there were watching the Bushman for ten minutes or so and then there was a old time arcade museum with a bunch of penny arcade games that you could play which was worth the visit. If you want a good view of the city, Coit tower was alright but five bucks just to ride the elevator, definitely isn't essential. Walking across Golden Gate Bridge was pretty cool as well.
Food... definitely eat as many meals as possible in Chinatown. Ask around at a store that you buy something at what a good dim sum place is. I would tell you the specific places we ate at that were good but I don't know there names. When in a restaurant just point to the family that has a feast (there will almost certainly be one) and say you want what they're having. It will most likely be delicious. Also, you should try to get either fish and chips or clam chowder in a sourdough breadbowl while you're at the Wharf.

I thought Alkatraz was alright, but waaaaaaaaay to touristy. I mean, the place was packed with tourists. So it probably depends what time you go. Agree with MOMA and the Wharf. Wharf has a lot of great food though. I never went to the cable car museum. waks, did you go to Golden Gate park at all? The De Young Museum was by far the best one we went to while there. Great architecture, too. The botanical garden was alright. The California Academy of Sciences was still under construction when I was there, but looks to be incredible.
-
We are going to MOMA the first day. They have some jewelry exhibit that mrs. dave is nerding out on.
-
Little Italy is elite. Go to the park (think it is Columbus) across from the church where Marilyn Monroe and Joe D were married. Lots of good grub around there. Go to Blue Bottle coffee.
