Title: What is it going to take to get the 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament?
Post by: Pete on February 24, 2010, 11:14:36 AM
In my opinion, the difference between being the 4 and the 5 is minuscule compared to the difference between being the 5 and the 6 overall seed.

6-8 seeds get UK, UK and 'Cuse.  DO NOT WANT!

Currently, WVU (3) and Duke (4) have us (8) beat on strength of schedule.  Right now, Duke (2) has us (5) beat on RPI, but we beat WVU (6)  http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/polls/rpi/index1.  These two seem like the leaders to beat us to the 5 seed.  Nova has a SOS of 30+, and Pitt and GTown are 5+ spots lower on the RPI with a couple more losses, but do have good SOS.

WVU's losses are all pretty good, with home losses only to Villanova and 'Cuse.  Their worst loss is Notre Dame (81 rpi), and that's not too bad.  They beat Ole Miss and aTm, and Ohio State.

Duke's losses are all road losses at GTown (10 rpi), Wisconsin (17 RPI), GT (30 rpi), and NC State (118).

In summary, here is how we stack up against Duke and WVU:

May want to distinguish more between 5 seed and 5th best team.  JMHO.

I suppose that's a good question...

Will the committee "reward" the 5th  overall seed, which is a 2 seed,  by putting them in a location that is best for them of the available spots, with priority over the other 2 seeds?  Or, will they "reward" the top 2 seed (which is the 5th overall seed) with the a pairing with the lowest 1 seed (Purdue)?

One key point is that we have 3 wins over teams ranked 101-105 rpi (last I checked)....If those teams could win out, it could give us 3 more quality wins.

i'm not toooo scared of cuse compared to purdue/duke/wvu.  cuse still has some work to do.  they get nova at home Saturday and finish the regular season @L'ville.  could drop them a little bit if they don't win those 2 games.

so fighitng for the 3-6 seeds are (in order of mcmwcat's ranking)

Cuse
Purdue
Duke
KSU
WVU
Nova
New Mexico
Pitt

I agree with this.

Purdue (MSU) and Duke (Maryland) each only have one top 50 game left, but they'll each be favored.

Looking at that list and knowing what their remaining schedules look like, it really seems like a No. 1 seed is a pipedream.  Let's say K-State wins out (possible, though not likely) and Syracuse dies in a fire (losses to Nova and Louisville).  Team would still have to jump the likes of Duke or Purdue (not happening save an upset or two happening) and beat back Nova and WVU (somewhat unlikely since NCAA would want at least one No. 1 seed from the Big East, regardless of what they say about conference affiliation) to make that happen.

This link (http://www.warrennolan.com/basketball/2010/nitty) gives you a pretty good site to compare/contrast the teams we are competing with for the top 2-seed, etc.

The only way I see a 1 seed happening is by beating KU twice.  That would hopefully put us ahead of them.  Of course this also means we have to win out.

Hanging on to a 2 seed period would be an accomplishment.

does the ncaa not pair up the "highest" 2 seed with the "lowest" 4 seed every year?

all the probable/possible 1 seeds are good.  don't think it really matters which one kstate gets put with.  oth, there is a lot of variation in quality among the possible 2s/3s.
