Title: new walk-on ??
Post by: D-FRED-BROWN on July 16, 2011, 01:09:41 PM
just noticed today http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=173&f=2671&t=7497422... supposed to be SG/PG i think

When Shawn Meyer received a phone call from Kansas State assistant basketball coach Brad Underwood this week, he wasn’t quite sure what to think.

“I’d met Frank Martin (the head coach at Kansas State), at a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce gala in Kansas City and I introduced myself and told him I’d like to play at Kansas State,” Meyer said.

“I can tell you this – Coach Martin is a man of his word. He asked for some game film. Then someone from K-State saw me play last summer in an AAU tournament in Tulsa, Okla., and they called my family.”

The Wildcats kept an eye on the Jaguars standout and eventually, Meyer and his family were invited to Manhattan, Kan., for a personal tryout.

Meyer found out Wednesday that he had been given preferred walk-on status with the team.

“Basically, it means I’m a member of the K-State basketball team, and I get to enjoy everything the scholarship players enjoy – I’m just not on a scholarship.”

Meyer was decked out in K-State gear Friday as he talked about his big trip to the Little Apple.

“It was just amazing, especially sharing it with my mom and dad and younger brother Marcus,” Meyer said. “I got to practice with guys on the team, and Coach Underwood was there.

“When it was over, I believe he called Coach Martin (who was unable to attend the session), and he came back and shook my hand and welcomed me to the team. It was just so amazing.”

Meyer wants to major in construction/science management, and Kansas State offers that major.

“I was thinking about going to Kansas State even before all this happened because they offer my major,” Meyer said. “Now, I get my major and get to keep playing basketball. This week has just been a whirlwind.”

Meyer was a big part of coach Jimmy Cain’s most successful season at South, as the Jaguars finished with a 20-8 overall record and 6-3 Suburban Big Six mark, which was good for a share of the conference championship.

Throughout the season, Cain pointed to Meyer’s contributions to the team’s success.

“When Drake Patterson was injured last season, Shawn scored a lot more points,” Cain said. “This year, Drake came back, and Shawn sacrificed the scoring for rebounding and playing against a much bigger inside opponent night in and night out. He did all the dirty work that helps a team win but doesn’t receive much recognition.

“I honestly didn’t know about this until Shawn called me Wednesday and said, ‘Coach, I have some good news.’ And he told me about the tryout, and I’m just thrilled for him and his family.

“It’s been fun seeing him at school the past couple of days in his K-State gear.”

South activities director Mark Bubalo believes Kansas State is getting a quality young man.

“There isn’t a more deserving kid at this school than Shawn Meyer,” Bubalo said. “He’s a great basketball player and a great student in the classroom. He will do a wonderful job representing Blue Springs South at Kansas State.”

Meyer, who stands 6-foot-5, will likely be a swingman for the Wildcats, playing at a No. 3 guard position.

“I’ll do whatever they want, but I think most of the time I’ll be distributing the ball,” Meyer said. “They want me in Manhattan in early June. So I’ll get a chance to see what this is all about right away.”

when you run across and post an old article about a walk-on, just assume that everyone else saw the info when it emerged and title your post "old walk-on ??".
