Title: Great LHCBS story from Lake Okoboji Iowa
Post by: Trim on July 09, 2011, 07:36:08 PM
Just got back from taking grandkids, all 4 under age 7, to Lake Okoboji for 3 days. Clean family oriented place, crystal clear water. On the 2nd day we decide to rent a speedboat so the kids could get out on the lake. Went to Extreme Watersports, in Arnolds Park on the West lake. While getting life jackets on all the kids the owner saw my KSU visor, smiled and said, Coach Synder. I proceeded to tell him more about KSU and Coach then he probabaly wanted to hear. He said that he knew Coach. His family had been coming to Okoboji since their Iowa days. He said Coach had been with them 3 years straight up until recently. He laughed at the memory of Coach Synder's family always giving the Coach some grief about not parasailing. He said they, kids/grandkids were unrelenting. Finally on the last trip Coach gave in and said he would parasail. The owner said he thought to himself, great, what if something should go wrong, half of Kansas and Iowa would hate him. He mentioned there are still a lot of Iowans connnected to Bill and follow his program. Everything went great with the parasailing he said, and Coach really enjoyed showing the family what he can do at age 70 or so. Then came the most telling comment about our Coach. The owner said after Coach's 3 year stint of retirement was over, he has not seen Coach back at the Lake with family. We have all expressed complaints about our Coach in one way or another, but never his dedication. It is safe to say Coach Synder has devoted his life to his job, our team, our University and fans like no other coach. I am sure, or at least hope, his family understands this is where he wants to be, and hopefully there will still be time for leisure in LHCBS's future, after some unfinished business. Side note, many people greeted us as fellow Wildcats while in Iowa, people from Atchison, Wamego, Salina, KC, Topeka, Effingham, that I can remember.

We were at our Table Rock cabin all week and there is always Purple around. Our boat has a Powercat on the stern and our slip at the marina has a KSU windsock at the stern end and a purple sign with our names and Powercats at the bow end.
I had to smile at the folks about 3 slips away from us who have a very nice new Cobalt and are big WSU fans. They seem nice but when the lady showed up wearing her NIT championship it was amusing.
The marina is owned by very nice people (and good friends of ours)who are from Lincoln and NU grads so we some of that around.
The best story from last week was when I was waiting in line to get gas at the marina on Saturday. As you can imagine it was extremely busy on a holiday weekend but everyone was being patient and polite while waiting until a young couple on a jet ski (I hate those things) cut in front of me just as the slip I was waiting for came available. As first I was pissed but when he turned his head and I saw "Kansas" on his hat I just laughed at the idiot. It got better as he made the high school girl working at the marina get on the jet ski with him and fuel it instead of taking the hose and doing it himself like any normal person would. The usual uk2 "serve me" attitude.
And the gal with him was a typical uk2 bimbo type too.

You could use some time with the kids at a clean family oriented place.

kind of wish I heard this guy say this stuff whilst watching the sunset and sitting on a rocking chair with no other sound but the whispers of a slight, Kansas breeze through a hedgerow. Following the casual back and forth of the wheat as they stretch to get their last taste of sun for the day. Children in the distance chasing each other around an old farm implement.  Beads of sweat from my glass of Iced Tea slowly rolling down my calloused hands, because I didn't get to where I am without working rough ridin' hard.

Freedom.  America.

Go Cats.  Tuck Proud.

After reading this thread I felt it necessary to go have a good old fashioned pray. You Wildcats are wonderful people and it made me so happy to read all these stories I just had to go put my hands together and say a few words to the big Man upstairs in hope that he blesses you with many blessings. Thanks for those stories.

Hey...I think I park my boat a few slips down from this guy.   :surprised:
