Title: Fresh Pineapples
Post by: michigancat on June 29, 2011, 04:22:37 PM
They are intimidating at first, but they are totally worth the trouble of slicing. They are way better than the payoff you get from cutting a mango.

Enjoy the tip!   :kstategrad:

I have a special knife that works fantastic for slicing pineapples.  Supposed to be a bread knife, I think, but it is a pineapple knife at my house.

Gotta cut them at just the right time and can't be one of those cheap assholes who is too scared to lose some fruit so they don't cut the brown spots all the way off.

stunz can attest. this is one of the highlights of street vendors in Thailand (circa 2001, anyways). That, and glass bottles of red bull in shopping carts full of ice (avoid the tiny monkeys).

My dad always brings em back from HI.  Pretty tasty, especially in comparison to the canned crap.

I just don't get down with cooked pineapples.   I'm sure that the caramelization on them would be tasty but it fucks with the texture and I just can't abide with that crap.

Understandable. It takes a few times to get used to them I suppose

Cooked pineapple concentrates the sweetness into a smaller area.

I put them on top of the ham when I bake it or smoke it.  I like the flavor it imparts on the meat.

Yes, this is good as well.  My parents always get Ham & Pineapple pizza whenever they order.  It isn't too bad.

There's a great photo floating around on the internet somewhere of yours truly munching on a fresh Hawaiian pineapple from Maui last year.
