Title: Noise - cancel head phones
Post by: fatty fat fat on June 18, 2011, 07:17:14 PM
I was walking around best buy, and put these things on (bose, 15) and was blown away by how awesome of a job they do.

the problem is the price.

do cheaper (but good quality) ones exist? foam ear plugs are just too uncool for me.

Seems like many audiophiles act as is Bose isn't nearly as great as people think, you end up paying more for the name than actual quality.  I would guess you would be able to find a pair of like Sonys for a more reasonable price.  Out of curiousity, how much did they want for the Bose?

Etymotic Research makes some great noise isolating earbuds for about $100 that i wear when flying on elite European business trips. Much more compact than noise canceling headphones and no batteries either.

If you're looking for full headphones than i suggest Grado or Sennheiser....no idea if they make noise canceling units though.

I bought used Bose 13s, full over the ear, noise canceling headphones on Ebay for about half the original retail price. They are a little scratched up, but work perfect.  I've worn them on 15 hour flights, and thanked baby jesus that I had them.

Ya, I didn't really give a eff about sound quality difference between the noise canceling Bose and a high-end audiophile thingy...I wanted to watch movies and not hear babies screaming all around me for long stretches of time.

I have a pair of Sonys that cost about $50. No complaints....I mean they're rough ridin' headphones, no need to spend $300

If you're not too picky, just get something like this. (http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-202-Dynamic-Headphones/dp/B000065BP9/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1308531972&sr=8-11) You will still be able to faintly hear outside noise, but they will sound great, and cost $290 less.

In ear monitors will usually do better than noise cancelling in both blocking outside noise and sound quality. Also, Bose are incredibly over rated/priced. You can get a pair of audiotechnicas (or a number of other brands) with better sound and 1/3 the price.

i bought ear plug things for 15 bucks at wal mart and they block all noise and the sound is great. currently enjoying a wide array of elite music while surfing the interwebs.

in summary, all the fancy head phones are just over priced bull crap, and ear plugs type things are the way to go because they are just as good and get in the way a lot less.

I bought some ear buds that don't have active cancellation, but work extraordinarily well as noise reduction.  I can put them in with no music playing and not be able to hear anyone in the same room talking.  That and they are very light weight and very comfortable.  Have not used on a plane yet, but use when mowing and the mower sounds like it is far down the street.

Love them.

Get foam replacement tips. The silicone ones get uncomfortable after a time.

ear buds are terrible, and are completely useless for more than 30 minutes because they're so uncomfortable. There are some IEM's that are better, but for something longer than an a couple of hours, an over-ear phone would probably be best.

I listened to pike.  They are very decent.

Some 1st 24 observo's:

-Taking them off is slightly (very slightly) disorienting, ears/balance thing.  (DARIS!!??)
- they don't go all the way around the outside of the ear so not a "seal" the way the bose or many other's work.
-powered, which is good supposedly
-like the "foldability"
-like the "hey, check it out, I'm DJamer'ing. one ear on possibilities."
-do NOT like the super thin/cheap cord.  Just waiting to fray.

I got these for about $120.  Worked pretty well, with the exception of the lectures I was listening to not covering the material on the rough ridin' test.

I always buy Sennheiser.  I had a pair that I busted up a couple of years ago, but the sound quality was as good as anything I've ever heard.

This is what I'd buy if I was in the market for them right now.
