Title: Could you talk a gunman out of killing you?
Post by: j rake on May 06, 2011, 07:40:38 PM: Let's say you are sitting in an office late at night in an empty building and you look up and there's a gunman.

He doesn't want money and he doesn't want any of your possessions. He doesn't even know you. He just wants to kill you.

You begin to panic and you try to reason with the gunman, but he's in no mood. Then you hop on the Internet and begin typing a post into a message board, hoping like hell someone will see it and call for help. The gunman realizes this and then tells you that if you hit "post," he'll kill you.

Do you hit "post"?

If you do, do you think the gunman will actually kill you?

If you do not, do you think you'll be able to talk the gunman out of killing you?

Post by: Tobias on May 06, 2011, 07:45:01 PM: i don't think i'd be willing to call the bluff of some crazy dude who wants to kill me. i'd probably just try to do stuff that i would think would lead to the opposite of him killing me for as long as i could. i would also hope for him to have a heart attack or some fluke thing during the middle of him trying to kill me.

I think it would be random enough to throw him off?

If I was a gunman and the guy I wanted to kill reached for a phone, that would make me spring into action. But if the guy I wanted to kill logged on to a message board, well, I don't think I could finish the job.

scoops, in all honesty you should probably just let the person know they're about to encounter a mean gunman and should leave work early or not stay late or whatever. wouldn't that be the ultimate scoop - saving someone's life?

You'd have to be more subtle than that. I'd look right over his shoulder and start nodding or motioning my head to the left or right as if I'm trying to communicate with someone. Then when he looks I take him down.

Better idea. Contact the movie studio and locate that table and make it your work desk.

I do have one of those old revolving tv stands. I think I could make it work.. Only hope I get it done in time before the next armed gunman comes after me at work.
