Title: Most hellish stretches of road in the nation(Mod'd)
Post by: wetwillie on May 06, 2011, 11:39:07 AM
For example is Manhattan 2 hours from KC or is it 120 miles.  I say two hours but maybe that is the midwesterner in me :dunno:

Hours.  Always.

The hours thing is very midwestern.

Hours. When you're on a long road trip no one wants to hear you have 700 miles to go, that will take forever. Saying you have about 10 hours left makes it seem like if you take a nap you'll be there when you wake up.

I've gone to and from New York in 20 hours, 25 hours and once, in 35 hours.

But it's been 1,263 miles every time.

Hours is useless, especially for a long road trip.

In city?

15 minutes.

Everything takes 15 minutes.

Totally depends. If it's highway with average traffic, miles will suffice. If it's a path slowed way down by traffic or something else, time.

Off the cuff I would say miles but then I think about it and I have no rough ridin' clue how far it is from Omaha to Manhattan but I know it's a three hour drive and I have no clue how many miles a flight from LA to Kauai is but I know it's 5 hours and 45 minutes.  :dunno:

But if you know how long it should take, isn't that more relevant?   For instance, 20 miles non-stop through Kansas takes >20 minutes depending on how fast you're driving.   20 miles through Colorado Mountains non stop may take between 30-90 minutes.

This is ridiculous. If you tell somebody the miles they will immediately try to figure the hours in their head.

the point he made is that how long it takes was different everytime.  you don't know how long it took until after you've done it.

a drive from pasadena to santa monica could take 20 minutes, it could take an hour and a half.  same distance.

the obvious answer (to anyone not from Quinter, KS) is miles.

In the case of a place like LA, miles are just as meaningless as time (if not more).  Your answer of 20 minutes w/ perfect traffic and an hour and a half in bad traffic is actually the perfect answer.

In CA the correct answer always starts with "at this time of day..."

Under 30 miles use distance  Over 30 miles/min use time.

City always use time.  Nobody knows how far a mile is in the city.

except in LA you can run into massive traffic problems at all times of day and any day of the week.

You know what's tough about driving in LA during rush hour?  Not a damn thing.  I felt so badass after realizing that.  Everyone got me really worked up about it and, like, the hotel guy was all laughing about some hick hayseed from KS coming out and trying to drive their roadways but it was very meh.  It's like Omaha or KC during rush hour but with three more lanes.  Big rough ridin' deal.

LOL no man.  some roads are fine, others are really really really brutal.  really depends on where you were in the city.
next time you go to LA and want to feel like a hick hayseed, hit the East LA Interchange during rush hour

When driving anywhere in LA, you just tell them where you're starting from and say I'll call you when I get close. OK. Later.
