Everyone gets it every night.

Happened to me one time two years ago. Absolutely terrified me.
-
take this crap to the ape room.

I have it down to where it feels like I'm floating, if it combines with a vivid dream I fly around. However, the tingling sensation that is felt all over is strongest in my balls which is painful.
-
Have it pretty often, combined with a little night terrors. Sucks.

Seriously. Happened to me in high school and I flipped out. At least, mentally flipped out.

Sleep paralysis keeps you from walking around and murdering people in your sleep.

Happens during REM sleep, which most normal human beings go through. Keeps you from killing yourself and/or your family. Also, every one dreams. Not everyone stores memories of those dreams.

REM sleep keeps you from killing people or sleep paralysis keeps you from killing people?

Sleep paralysis. During dreams, you really are telling your body to physically react to your dream, but due to sleep paralysis something hinders the connection so that those signals don't actually make your body move.

No. I don't even dream.

I get this all the time. Never knew the name for it. It's absolutely terrifying and I almost always go into panic mode. Hate it.

Pretty sure sleep paralysis occurs when you are just waking up from REM sleep and your mind is awake but your body is not. Have had friends that complain about it before, never have I ever wanted to move but not been able to.

I dreamed last night that I needed a kidney transplant. Thanks, idiots.

Lot of LSPIQ in this thread. Paralysis during sleep is what you are describing that everyone has. When people refer to Sleep Paralysis as a sleeping disorder, they're often describing a situation where your conscious mind awakens while you are still asleep. You're body is still asleep, unable to move, (which is a normal function while you are sleeping to keep you from running out in traffic at night) but your mind is awake (when this happens, the paralysis is supposed to stop). Dreaming actually rarely occurs during an episode of sleep paralysis, because like someone mentioned above, It happens in REM sleep while your brain activity is much lower, suggesting little dreaming. When I have it, My conscious mind remembers what my subconscious mind is doing during REM. It's really more comparable to a screen saver than a dream. I see floating objects, Spiders, and black shadowy figures in my room. Show me a person that says they've been abducted by aliens or sees ghost and I'll show you a person suffering from sleep paralysis disorder.
Sleep walking is a related disorder, where your mind stays in it's subconscious state, but the switch in your brain controlling the paralysis is set to the awake mode allowing you to move about. I've never sleep walked, but I hallucinate while in bed often.

I sleep walk when sleeping in uncomfy beds. Like friends houses, hotels, etc.
Used to sleep walk a lot when younger. Like wake-up-and-find-that-you-are-outside sleep walking.

I get something like this a lot when I take naps during the day. My dream turns to me waking up and being on the couch or wherever I fell asleep but I can't move. All my surroundings are as if my eyes are open right there. Sometimes I think I've fallen on the floor because I'm trying to shake so hard just for a little movement. The weird part though is I will usually see friends or someone I know walk through the door and completely ignore me and then I try yelling but can't do that either. When I finally wake up I'm still on the couch and no one had been there. Kinda freaky

Sleep paralysis saved my life once. I fell asleep with my eyes open while driving from Manhattan to Wichita and woke up trying to kill a spider on my dash board. Of course there was no spider, but when I realized the spider was just a hallucination I woke up just as my tires were hitting the gravel of the shoulder. I didn't have any trouble staying awake the rest of the ride home.
